The Duchess of Cambridge is pregnant....

Girls born to members of the Royal Family are to be given equal rights with boys in the succession to the throne as centuries-old rules were overturned today.

As the historic changes to the monarchy were agreed, the Queen, at the Commonwealth summit in Perth, Australia, hailed the power of women to change the world.

The reforms mean the if the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's first child is a girl, she will take precedence over any younger brothers in the order of succession.
Reform: The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's first born child will inherit the thrown after David Cameron struck a deal with Commonwealth leaders to end the rule that the first-born male takes the thrown

The change will go into effect when the Parliaments (that require it) of the countries approve it. Until then, nothing has changed.

The Times, the BBC, disagree and note the change official as of last year's agreement - as noted in the article.

Although U.K. legislation has not yet been passed to change the existing succession laws, in May the queen confirmed at the opening of Parliament that the British government would work with commonwealth countries to bring in a new royal succession law.

U.K. legislation will be introduced once 14 of the 16 commonwealth nations have agreed to change their laws.

Heh.

I don't know that she took his name, as I've not heard her referred to with any last name but Middleton.

Personally, I know her name is actually Middleton, so that's what I'd go with were I not somehow addressing her by title, heh. Regardless, I don't recall any official announcement that she was renouncing her own last name so...

The official announcement, as far as the palace was concerned, was the announcement that her title was Duchess of Cambridge.

Were she to have retained her last name, that would have been announced.

I have seen pictures of guest books they have signed. She signs "Catherine".

I am so happy for William and Kate:thumbsup2 they will make wonderful parents and seem to have such a solid, loving relationship! BTW I've heard it reported the baby, if it would be a girl and take the throne, could use the title of Queen Diana I.

The rules of secession were changed - the paperwork simply isn't through, but as I understood it, the agreement is the official date of the change and it was like last year some time. Before the Jubilee, anyway, I think. Hence it's in effect.

Her name is Kate Middleton. Her title is HRH Duchess of Cambridge.

As far as the secession, as two people disagreed I went to look and found the NYT says (from last year) -

It's succession, not secession. No one is seceding.

And might I remind you, in a thread a few months ago, you kept wrongly insisting Hillary Clinton is still referred to as Hillary Rodham (without the Clinton). You may want to really brush up on the names of world figures if you are going to proclaim to know it all.

"succession" is correct, but it is "Hillary". Since we're correcting mistakes. :)

I did wonder why Kate and William would be seceding, however. Good to know they're not!

Not until all the Parliaments of the Commonwealth approve the changes. He should work at getting one of the countries on his side.

Harry gets knocked down a notch no matter what. The only thing the rule would change is if the first child is a girl, she'd no longer be knocked down a notch by her later born brother. Any child of William will be ahead of Harry.

That's her title, not her name.

Yes, secession was dumb, I'm quite tired. If you think I claim to know it all, might want to brush up on where I ever claimed that.

As I said back then, Hillary Rodham added Clinton's name to hers because the voters in Arkansas are what they are. She never used it before that, she didn't use it after that except in those terms. I have respect for her, she has respect for herself, I'll use her own name. Call her whatever you want.

Actually she announced in 1993 after Bill Clinton took office she would include Clinton in her name but that is another thread. Oh wait that has been done.

As for Kate, as a titled royal she holds no surname, but when one is used, it is Mountbatten-Windsor.
