Lost faith

Has anyone ever rented their DVC to someone who seemed fine? Answering emails making payment arrangements etc and then get swindled? It's been going on over a week. Kept getting the check was mailed...if you don't get it then I will pay via PayPal,etc. I've tried calling texting emailing but have not been able to get a response.

It's less then 30 days so canceling would put the points in holding which most likely I will lose anyway. I am beyond upset. I have never had an issue renting my DVC and now I have lost faith in trusting. How horrible is that so close to the holidays? The $ was going towards Xmas gifts for my four year old. Now I have nothing because I put trust somewhere I shouldn't have

I just wish I could do something so no one else will experience what I went through Thanks for listening

Sorry this happened. The only piece, that will help others, is to learn how important it is to set payment deadlines far enough in advance. The one option you still have is to offer it as a reservation, even at a discount, since you may lose the points anyway. Check the rules on the rent and trade board.

Good luck!

Sorry this happened because you wanted to gifts for your little one. I never rented out my points but if I couldn't use them I see on email notifications that the Timeshare Store rents points out. Or perhaps another broker? It's a shame that those points go into holding because of this.

Change the name on the reservation.

Give them a call and say that you still have a reservation, but they do not. However, if they Fed Ex you a certified check, after you cash it, you'll change the name back. But it has to be Fed Ex'd on Monday, because Tuesday you are listing the reservation as a "can't be used" on the rent trade board for less than 30 days out at firesale prices.

Hopefully you got a deposit from them.

The reservation was just made before Thanksgiving. All I heard was the check is in the mail, the check is in the mail. I can't believe I fell for a scam. I just hope no one else falls for this person's scam. The reservation is for later this month so it's getting close to the time so I can hope that I can repost the reservation at a discount for someone else, someone trustworthy. I would never be able to string someone along like this, that is probably why I feeling so horrible. I was getting into the holiday spirit but now I just feel like doing nothing. This stinks!!

What is your UY? Points in holding are not the end of the world. And at the very least you must have until Feb 1st until points expire to find another renter if this one doesn't pay or if you can't find someone else to rent it. And if it's more time than that all the better.

My UY is September. some of the points were originally banked so I have a feeling I won't be able to use the points this year. I sent a message to the Dis board moderators to see if there is anything I can do. Hoping something will work out.

Renting points/reservations has risks on both sides and it is a business that requires work and trust.

In the end people are people, some nice, some not, some experienced, some not, some organized, and some not.

Then you would have 9 months to try and find a new renter if it doesn't work with this one - that's good news. I don't think you have to be concerned about losing the points but you may have to do a little more work to find a different renter unless that check shows up.

I'm really sorry this happened to you. We tend to hear more from potential renters that they are afraid of being scammed by an unethical owner. However, as PP stated there is a very real risk on both sides of the transaction, and owners have just as much, if not more, to lose than a renter.

I hope things work out and that you end up being able to rent your points.

For what it's worth, we own 700 BLT points and will never rent them. Never, ever, ever. (getting back together....) We rented once, using a broker, and still ended up with problems. The renters did something when they checked in that caused the reservation to be cancelled and rebooked by the resort. Doesn't seem like it should be a big deal, except they took more points and left the ones originally used to make the reservation in holding! And it was not a small amount. A nerve wracking call to MS fixed the issue, but scared me enough that I vowed to never rent again. As of now we have no problem using our points (family of 4), but in the future if we have excess I'll offer them for transfer to another owner, or will rent to friends or family only.

Sorry again...

I have rented before with no issues. Most from here. Lots of return renters also. I thought when you cancel a reservation within 30 days it goes into a different account and you have to use then 60 days out from end of uy? I could have sworn that's what I read on the website this morning. Going to have to double check it.

Holding points must be used for reservations scheduled within 60 days of check-in. So you have until Aug. 31, 2013 to use the holding points but the vacation you book must not be more than 60 days ahead. You should be able to get the holding points rented but it may not be in time for Xmas shopping.

We likewise do not rent for this same reason. This same situation happened to my cousin who rented. The renters changed peoples names after check-in at the desk. It cancelled the original reservation and took points the additional points for the new reservation.

Holding points can be used 60 days or less from the Check In date. Holding points cannot be banked and have to used before the end of your Use Year. But the reservation has to be 60 days or less from check-in.

If you cancel a reservation less than 30 days out, the points go into holding status, and they can only be used for a reservation less than 60 days before check-in day, not the end of the UY. The only role UY plays here is that they cannot be banked, so with a UY of September, you would have until Sept. 1 to find a reservation with 60 days or less notice.

I don't know if I'd call this a "scam," because the person didn't get anything from you. YET. At this point, no way would I accept a check in the mail. Tell them they have one day to send you the money by Paypal, and they pay the fees. After that one day, advertise the trip here on the DIS (and anywhere else you can find), and whoever gets payment to you first should get it. This is a high-demand time, so you might yet get a decent amount for it. I wouldn't bother to change names or cancel it yet.

Keep us posted!

I did change it to PayPal. I found out the name associated with their email was a totally different name on the PayPal acct which struck me as very strange. I have tried contacting them but have gotten no response what so ever

Thank you for explaining the holding acct. hopefully I find someone who legit. I think I will only accept Paypal from now on.

I would change the names on the reservations so they don't try to go to the resort and do something funky. Advertise the reservation; I am sure you will get lots of bites!

My number one rule when renting is to cancel any reservation that has not been paid for in full by 31 days ahead of the reservation.

Sorry this has happened to you.

this is my number two rule. my number one rule is "show me the money" with a booking deposit via paypal and then a personal check for the balance within seven days. i seldom do payment plans of any kind unless it's very large ressie.
