Disney Dining Plan for diabetics?

Hi, my wife and I will be travelling to WDW in December 2013.
I am looking at making reservations for resort & am considering the dining plan.
Only concern is I'm type 2 diabetic, an I'm unsure If the dining plan will be appropriate?
Will they allow ' swaps ' instead of desserts ( ie water / drink or healthy option ) or am I best to go a la carte & order entree / meal items separately?

Most of the TS restaurants offer a no sugar added dessert, but you should be careful as some of those desserts contain sugar alcohol and many of them make up for the lack of sugar by loading up on carbs. In some restaurants, regular plain cheesecake may be the best choice of dessert for a diabetic.

You'll find a lot of information on the DISabilities board here. I'd suggest taking a look there.

See the above post. You may be able to request an alternative dessert if you don't like the sugar free/no sugar added options they put on the menu. Some places may have a cheese platter that will qualify as dessert. At table service, swapping for appetizers won't be allowed though. That is very strictly enforced, even regarding medical conditions.

Counter service may allow swapping the dessert for water or fruit.

IMO, unless it is Free Dining, you are best to Out of Pocket (OOP) and skip the plan.

I agree. I see many responses are about sugar free options but as a diabetic you know that it's not only about sugar, but also carbohydrates. At the TS restaurants the portions are large and heavily laden with carbs (pasta, potatoes, bread). OOP might suit you better.
