I've Been at work all day and done loads of overtime and ok he cleaned out the guinea pigs and hoovered, but I asked him to cook us some dinner and he says he can't, he doesn't know how to! He is a grown man and will not even try to cook anything which is driving me insane! I'm sitting here thinking if something was really wrong with me and I couldn't physically cook what would happen!

Apparently you would be living off take out and things that can be microwaved (I'm assuming he can at least microwave).

I'm glad to have a husband that can cook. He doesn't do anything fancy, but that is partially because he prefers really simple dishes/foods. However I"m confident that if something happened and I couldn't cook the family would not have to live solely on takeout.

He won't buy anything nor will he put anything it the microwave :-( sad times!

Ok obviously this is up to you but now that we went past can't and on to won't I would have a serious problem with this. At this point I would be ordering/preparing something for everyone else in the house and making him figure out food for himself.

For example my DH won't do dishes with the dishwasher. Its partly that he honestly really sucks at loading it, he gets half the things I can in it and then they make an annoying clunking sound.

But if he really needs a dish for something he is perfectly willing and capable of washing it by hand so its really not an issue and I'm ok with doing the dishes 99% of the time... I hate doing the laundry and make him do most of that (yet if I spill something or need a specific shirt I can wash something on my own too).

No shopping = no food = no dinner!!!

When he's hungry enough he'll soon rustle something up!!

That attitude would last all of 2 minutes in my house!!! I'd be seriously be cooking my/children's tea & let him fend for himself.

What is he - man or mouse?

I am very lucky in that DBF cooks in our house... I can cook if I have to, but I don't enjoy it whereas DBF does. So I do the dishes instead! Xx

luckily DH can do a mean roast and fry -up even if it does involve using every pot and pan going and all the work surfaces! He will also try his hand at a recipe that he thinks looks easy. Baking of any sort is totally out of the question which is no big problem as I LOVE to bake. But in answer to the OP I also would down tools if he isn't at least willing to try once in a while. You aren't asking him to do it on a regular basis all the time after all. I am a firm believer in sharing household tasks. Tell him to get off his backside and at least try as he might surprise himself. Oh and be prepared to never hear the end of it if he does, DH goes on for days when he has cooked up another tasty meal from a recipe with 'that meal was so good I made two weeks ago wasn't it? It was nearly as good as the one I did 6 months ago!' etc etc:rotfl:
Good luck...:)

My dad has stepped in to cook when we were younger and my mum was at work. He can't bake but is a decent cook and fab when it comes to BBQ's. My mum certainly wouldn't stand for the not cooking part.

I'm fortunate as all my male friends all know how to cook & will actually do it.

Hey wait! There's a few of us out here who cook. I do 95% of the cooking in our house which included our entire Thanksgiving meal. I've also taught my DS and DDs to cook as well. I also clean as I go, so when the meal is served, the kitchen is already clean. Oh, and I bake also.
My father didn't cook unless it involved a grill but my mother encouraged us to learn. Your DH's may be lost causes, but teach your kids so you won't have DIL's asking why your son can't cook.

My DH has two brothers and they were all brought up to by self sufficient by their mum. DH and one brother are brilliant at sharing chores and pitching in to do what's needed but it was completely lost on one brother whose idea of cooking is to pick up the phone and order a takeaway.

I'd go on strike if I were you.
Me too! ::yes::
