Wonder why jobs are going to China and India? Workers in China and India dont whine and complain.

Jobs go to China and India because companies can pay workers peanuts and pocket the difference as pure profit.

The only reason companies move jobs overseas is $$$$$ ~ plain and simple.

but they can pay them less because cost of living is so much cheaper.
In Taiwan, i can feed a family of 5 for $10. That is unheard of in the US. There McD menu combo are mostly around $5ish

Another thing was when i used to work for a button company, it was easier for us to ship it back to China to assemble than to hire 1-2 ppl here to assemble. This is WITH next day air to China and back.

Sorry, I avoided working retail because I know that working on holidays was a huge possibility. I'm not sure why anyone else who is butt hurt about working retail holiday hours is subject to have to stay at their jobs. I'm definitely in the suck it up or quit boat.

I seems like the earlier it has started though, now 8pm for Walmart on Thanksgiving, the more people there are. I miss the 3/4/5am starts because less people were willing to wake up that early.

On another note, since my birthday is so close to a holiday, I've had to celebrate it on another day before. I'm not sure why it's so hard for other people to celebrate Thanksgiving, or any other holiday, on another day. A lot of people I work with do that almost every year (healthcare).

No, they don't whine. I saw a special and the building in China had a net around the top of it -- why because the workers were jumping off and committing suicide. But, you are right, they don't whine. Here, read these.

We have become a 24/7/365 society.
I worked graveyard shift (11 pm to 7 am) from 1980 to 2005. Almost nothing was open overnight in 1980, maybe Dennys. In those days 7-11 Stores were open.....shockingly....from 7 am to 11 pm.
By 2005 7-11 ws 24 hours, as were a lot of places. Just this week, Dutch Brothers, a coffee chain that has kiosks in shopping center parking lots....decided to experiement with being open 24 hours.
So New York City is no longer the only city that never sleeps.

I don't know about China, but my DH works IT and works with people from all over the globe and they are ALWAYS whining and complaining about having to work. Heck, half the time they just don't show up and my DH ends up working for them. He worked Thanksgiving, will work Christmas, and got an email from someone in Manila the other day asking him to cover for them for New Year's Eve. But these same people won't EVER cover for him. The only ones that seem to show up to work on time and not whine and complain are the Americans.

Its hard to celebrate a holiday on another day and still see all the people you love. I'm not judging those who are complaining - I'm thankful that I don't have to do it. Sometimes it seems like the whole world is against families being together, and the holidays used to be "sacred" in that most of us could at least be together on that one day. I might have less empathy for retail workers if they were paid better on holidays.

Not the only reason. It's because their customers wouldn't pay the extra $$$$$ for domestically made items.

Christmas is on a Tuesday this year. We're deciding now whether to have our family dinner on Christmas Eve or on Sunday the 23rd because people have to travel home to work on Wednesday. So even though everyone is off both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, we still may move the family celebration. Even small families (we have three grown kids) have moved holidays to accomodate family. Throw some in-laws into the mix, and that 'sacred' day is gone.

We, for one, appreciated the retailers that were open on Thanksgiving. We were moving my elderly father, and greatly appreciated being able to run to Kmart and grab a few things without the Black Friday crowds!

I am one who refused to shop on Thanksgiving day. I just don't find shopping essential. I also took note of who remained closed and shopped those retailers over the weekend. Sure, I paid a little more, but I would rather support those retailers while they still exist. While chose to shop, and that is their right, I prefer to spend the time with my family.

I wonder if any of these people complaining (not the posters in the thread, per se) about businesses being open on Thanksgiving or Christmas have ever planned a trip to Walt Disney World over those holidays?

No shopping last night but our family went to a movie. This isn't anything new either, we've been going to movies on Thanksgiving and Christmas night for decades.

It's kind of ironic to me that movie theatre employees have worked major holidays for so long without any of this fuss but as soon as Walmart tries it all heck breaks loose.

Hypocritical if you ask me..if anyone has gone anywhere but their own home and have never used a service on a holiday than they can talk. But if anyone has run out because they forgot an item, the roasting pan broke, they needed gas, they went to the movies or rented a movie, they ate elsewhere or they watched TV, or even called the cable company that day, than they are hypocritical IMHO.

I try and try but can't see the difference between stores and other businesses such as theaters and restaurants being open. I guess that it's really just a matter of personal preference.

There isnt any difference. Like I stated above, where is the outrage against the gas stations, the movie theaters, the NFL, the bars, the restaurants, the country clubs.

And in all these threads I keep seeing Walmart mentioned, well wasnt Target and ToysRUs open too, why dont I see those names mentioned


And just for the record...I dont shop on Thanskgiving or Black Friday, it is not worth it to me. You can barely get me out on the days leading up to Christmas I hate shopping so much but if customers will shop then stores will be open. I am sure there was much outrage when shopping was allowed on Sundays finally. And there are plenty of other holidays that now have places open that never did before.

Times have changed, if you dont want to shop then dont, if the retailers dont have it work out they will close it is that simple. But then I hope you also dont run to any other stores or theaters, or you dont go out to eat anywhere but home or watch football so all those nonessential people can be home with their families too

Add to that the airports, theme parks, hotels, all operating on full tilt and not on a reduced service schedule.

Last I heard no one was complaining about the airlines, Disney, or Universal should be shut down out of respect for those workers and the "sacred" holiday.

Again, where is the uproar over other just as important holidays...Veteran's Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July and ALL the stores being open then. All very meaningful holidays to those living in this country - or shame on you if they're not. Shouldn't they be held to the same sacred criteria as Thanksgiving? Shouldn't those days be off limits as well?

Responding to a comment upthread somewhere. The whole world isn't against families getting together. That's misguided blame. The family controls that - plain and simple. You can have your Thanksgiving on Thanksgiving, or on Friday, next Sunday afternoon or not at all. All by choice rather than a sale ad of open hours. Don't blame Walmart or other retailers.

Yep, I know of a huge company that stopped outsourcing IT because they were terrible. There would be four guys sitting around a computer trying to solve the simplest problem, with their manager hovering. All of them getting paid for one person's work. So glad executive management got smart and brought those jobs back to the USA.

I feel sad for those who have to work on holidays. I know some people have to, and I know some people couldn't care less about the holidays, but it doesn't stop me from feeling bad about it.

I will NOT shop on Thanksgiving, ever, period. It's so sad to me that people are opening up for black Friday sales on Thanksgiving now.

I have had a job that made me work holidays, even though we were NOT busy at all (like 10 people the whole night)...it was a large chain petstore. They had us working late Christmas Eve with no one coming in...we just sat at the registers. It furiates me to no end. We all wanted to be home with our families. I also had to work 14 hours Christmas Sunday without pay and a half because it wasn't a recognized holiday. They literally put me on the schedule for every holiday because other people would ask off. Thankfully they were actually closed Thanksgiving and Christmas day. I finally got fed up with it and I did put in my two weeks. I'm so grateful that I now have a Monday-Friday job that recognizes weekday holidays.

Someone in my family went on about this the other day. I thought back to when I worked retail and remembered working Thanksgiving years ago. CVS even in 92-93 when I worked there was always open. I worked 9-4 on Thanksgiving and until 10:00 pm on Christmas Eve. We closed on Christmas because at that time there was no 24 hours pharmacy in the store, but I was given the "opportunity" to go work at the other CVS with a 24 hour pharmacy.

Add liquor stores to the always been open list. No one ever worries about those workers having to work.
