June 27, 2013 - Magic in the Med (Venice)

My DH and DS like the rented tuxes, but won't get them unless there are several others planning to as well. And I agree they make for nice pictures:thumbsup2

And I also have a black dress that I bring with me and wear at least one night in the MDR as well as Palo dinner. And a couple of different wraps as well. Great minds think alike;):thumbsup2

I'm planning on renting a plus-size tux for DH. We have rented twice while on European or British Isles cruises and were happy with the results.
I'll also be bringing one short black dress and one easy to pack tshirt style long black dress and will be mixing sweaters and wraps too. I've got to learn to pack smarter for these long cruises.

No tux for us. Dh & dgs gave them up a couple of years ago. Dress shirts and ties are what they will wear. Less to pack this way. The 1 time we rented the tux it was a mess. Nothing fit. DCL was great and got it all together at the last sec.

I sure wish the flight prices would come down. They have been the same price since the day they came out!

We don't do formal night or semi-formal night so no tuxes or fancy dresses for us. DH and the boys just don't enjoy it so we usually opt for Topsiders or something from Pluto's or Pinocchio's on formal night. Less packing and less complaining :)

The front cover of our AAA Going Places magazine this month has Dubrovnik on it, and inside is a whole bunch of stuff about cruising - including a beautiful spread of the Grand Canal in Venice!

Hi All,

Just poppin' on the thread to say we're still >IN< for this cruise. It will still be us, my parents and my ILs.

Happy sailing! :sail:

Hi all -

Just a note to all of you, if you wish to join our Facebook group. Please PM either myself or kmitchel for us to approve you. There is an outstanding request from someone, that I don't know and it won't be approved until one of us receives a PM.

Thanks!

Lori

Hello everyone,

We are all booked with airfare and a post night hotel stay... so I guess the trip is real now!

I took the liberty to create a google-docs spreadsheet to start collecting the information we'll want as a group for fish extenders, meet-and-greets, etc. Feel free to add yourselves (as little or as much info as you want). I added this same segment to the first post in the thread so it will be easy to find.

Add yourself to the Who's Sailing spreadsheet here: Roll Call Form. You can also sign up for the Fish Extender through the same form. You should be able to see your entry (and make modifications later on if you need to) here.

I sat down at my computer to do some responsible research in order to cast my vote, and got distracted by an airfare search. I found a British Airways flight that leaves Barcelona after noon on disembarkation day, and is actually one of the shorter flights between there and home - I plan to keep a watch on this. Airfares have remained steady for months now, and I am losing faith that I will ever hit my price point. If I have to pay more, I want that flight.

Now to go do my research.

Oh:cool1:
That sounds great.
Noty sure if that got lost in a pile of junk mail as I don't recall getting this.
I'll have to look for a copy:thumbsup2

Someone seemed concerned whether we were still going because I haven't posted in awhile. We are going...

yeah, that airfare is a big step:thumbsup2

:thumbsup2 I don't remember our cabin number (we've changed it when we added our kids) but I figure I will add it later.

Yes, I was hoping for cheaper flights too, but when we saw one we could live with we just went for it:confused3
Good luck with the research:thumbsup2

Ok, just putting this out there in case there is someone interested in joining us.

I have a private tour with Rome in Limo for the port of Rome (Civitavecchia) and am currently sharing with one other family for a total of 8 (4 adults and 4 teens). We have room for more in the minibus (I think it is 6 or 7 more) if anyone wants to join us:cool1:

We have opted to skip the Vatican museum as the day we are there will be extra long lines as entrance is free. We might try getting into St Peter's Basilica (assuming the tour guide can get us there at a good time when the line will move fast).

We will be hitting as many sites as possible so probably not suited for families with small children.

Send me a pm if you are interested in the details:)

Thanks Laurie. Our group of 7 doesn't want to go to St. Peter's as we were all there in 2010 HAVE FUN!!!!!

:thumbsup2 Yes I would imagine you would have other things to see the second time around (or third for some people).

So I was reading someone's Med trip report and they talked about getting a cameo while they were in Rome. The picture they posted was beautiful:cloud9:

So I started researching cameos to see the range of prices and how to tell what a good deal is....and now I'm more confused than before :upsidedow
Didn't realize there were so many different types, styles, etc.

Apparently Italy is a good place to get cameos as many are made there, but you can get taken if you don't know what to look for:headache:

Anyone here know anything about cameos:confused3

In 2007 we were on an excursion with DCL and they made a stop in Sorrento at a cameo "factory". I was nice and saw alot of cameos. We were told there are alot of Chinese knock offs so you should shop in a reputable established store front. As far as value vs. cost I can't help you there. My wife has her grandma's so we skipped purchasing. As everything check the internet.

Laurie - that sounds like a great plan and we would so be considering this but we're going to explore the other areas from Civitavecchia on this itinerary so we can have a full day in Florence and a full day in Naples. We're going to hit Rome hard on the previous sailing. But I wondered if you could PM me the info you have for contacts with Rome in Limo.

I expect the shopping guide onboard will have some info about cameos, so while I would do some research ahead of time, I would also check with them. I have found their talks to be helpful in looking for authentic souvenirs vs knock-offs.

You should check out Orvieto. It is a walled Etruscan (sp?) city dating back before the founding of Rome,. A real time capsule walled city. Check it out on the web, it may peak your interest.
