Hubby is officially on board with going on a cruise!!! :cool1:

We're discussing flights and was wondering what you all think. Is it worth it to you to save roughly $1000 to drive about 4 1/2 hours to another airport, for a cheaper non stop flight??

I would do it to save $1K. Couple hundred dollars, no. But a thousand dollars is quite a bit of money. Did you figure gas and possible hotel stay into the equation?

yes, absolutely. The only issue would by overnight cost if there are any. If no additional lodging cost, it's a no brainer for me. Depends on your finances probably. Also, is there any difference in parking your car at the further airport. There is also gas price. I still would drive, but that's me.

Figure out how much it is to park your car at the port -- that can get costly as well. $1,000 sure is a lot of money so it would be worth it for me.

$1000 is a lot, and you sort of hit the mark with the "non stop" flights. I would still consider flying in the day before the cruise if at all possible. Look at economy and off site parking options for the departure airport. I've never done 4 hours, but I've done 2 hours several times to save serious money.

Yes, airport parking can be expensive....but if I can't get a friend to drive me to our local airport, a taxi is $35 each way. That $70 will pay for off site parking for a 7 night cruise + day early. Yes, I'd still rather be driven, but.....

The good thing is that my uncle lives about an hour from the airport we're thinking of driving to....so we could just stay at his house before and after. My ONLY concern is I'm talking about JFK airport and we do not want to drive through the city. I HATE big cities! Does anyone know how bad it is driving there? $1000 is definitely worth it for us, I just want to get others input.

OK, since you are in NY, is there another way to get from Uncle's house to the airport? Bus, train, subway, light rail? I don't know the area--I'm sincerely asking.

Another reaons we're considering the drive is because they're non stop! 3 hours is a much better trip than 6+ hours due to stops and layovers! Much easier doing the non stop with the kids. I'll look into the parking issue more....although it's really not that bad, parking will only be a little over $100.

Not sure. But it would probably cost more and take longer taking a train down there than taking our own vehicle. But I'll look into it....haven't thought of that.

No question, I would drive the extra for that much of a savings. We travel quite a bit so that is a short drive as far as I'm concerned. My only problem is my DH hates to fly. The last several trips to DCL & WDW have been drive ones and it's a 16 hr trip for us. :faint:

Yes it is a lot to save....we're probably going to do it. I'm just scared to drive to the city! We drove to WDW last year and it took 2 days....which is why we flew this year, lol.

Yes, paticularly for a non-stop.

We have driven 2 1/2 hours to save a bit less than that, but I would only do it for a non-stop.

Driving in New York isn't that bad, especially getting to JFK. The roads are good, just make sure you allocate enough time for traffic.

Just the word traffic made me cringe, lol. Maybe I could get my uncle to drive us to the airport.

Orlando is always priced much higher from DFW than the surrounding airports. We usually fly into Jacksonville or Ft. Lauderdale and save $800-$1,000 for a 3 1/2 hour drive each way for 4 of us. My personal limit is that it has to be at least $500 savings to make the drive for 4 people for that distance. For our January flights, I am saving $200 per hour each way...it will take us 2.5 add'l hours of driving time per trip! $200/hr is a great wage!

Yes! We have done this. We saved around $1,000 on flights plus got a direct flight. It was worth it to us to drive about 4 hours to another airport out of state to get this deal.

I would drive just so I can bring more stuff:)
