Thanks Miffy and Lisa-upnorth!!!

By the time we leave we'll have been living together for 16 months. I think we can handle the train for a day. He'll probably walk the train for a bit and I typically have my nose in a book. :-D We survived a drive to Boston earlier this year.

I just wanted to be sure that the roomettes were private. I don't sleep well "in public". I've never been able to sleep on a plane or even the ferry I took in Alaska.

I also don't want to disturb others. He stays up later than I do. If we had our lights on I didn't want it to bother anyone.

I'm so excited!!! We leave in 51 days!!!

Hi there, frequent train travelers .. The roomettes is close... No wasted space at all.... 2 seats opposing each other, one seat has the toilet right next to it with the pull down sink above and the other seat has a small storage area next to it... Small table that folds between the 2 seats..... Little cubby above across from upper bunk when the room is set for sleeping....

Drapes cover the inside window and door, most times not that well (Velcro worn or missing ) suggest you pack some clothes pins or Arco clips to aid in securing curtains.... Person in upper bunk has to climb upon the toilet, then onto sink to reach upper bunk, 2 people cannot fit in one bed!!

Each bunk has reading lights, upper bunk has a window for viewing, only entertainment is what you bring with you.... Fairly quiet in sleeper car and with your door slid shut, peaceful.....

Good luck, we've used the sleeper, roomettes , on a few occasions from DC to Kissimmee and back but it gets rather claustrophobic in there for me, especially made up for sleeping , I prefer coach seats now... Tons of room around a pair of coach seats, plus the separate restrooms in each car over the toilet in the roomette, one must step out while the other uses facility, unless the other doesn't care....but to each their own! Have a nice train trip!.

We (my SigOther and I) have taken the train to Florida twice, once was in Coach (no other choice, week after 9/11 no flights from Boston) to Orlando, and a second time with a Roomette) all the way to Miami, I have also travelled one-way with my teenaged (he was 14) nephew to Orlando once. It is a small space, but for me it was nice to have the privacy of the roomette, the private potty for at night, we use the one in one of the regular cars (the closest one) during the day, and we enjoy the nice meals you get with the sleeper, they have a full dinner menu, not just steamed sandwiches in the dining room, and as its included, its a good deal for the sleeper, you just have to book early for the best sleeper price, and take an early dinner reservation, we usually do between 5-6. The steak was wonderful last time we went.
We leave on our next train trip in 18 days and I can't wait to go, its fun, I get to knit, read and watch tv (season 7 of Bones is waiting for us), I will bring my iPad, Laptop and of course a camera to take pix along the way.
:cheer2:

Would anyone happen to know which Amtrak station you would get off at in Boston to go to Faneuil Hall/Quincy Market?

Boston South Station should be the closest Amtrak station. It's about a 1/2 mile walk from South Station to Quincy Market.

You can hop the T at South Station and it will get you anywhere you want in Boston. It is a easy to deal with subway.

Thanks! My 12 year old daughter was there for 2 days last wek on a class trip and liked it so much she wants me to take her back there again. I figure we could just hop on Amtrak from Penn Station and go there for the day or overnight--is there a Hotel walking distance that you know of??

Sorry I have no hotel recommendations. When I go to Boston I stay with my brother. :-)

You might want to take a look at google maps. There are a bunch of hotels in the area and what I consider walking distance you may not.

For those of you familiar with the Albany, NY station, are there any rental car desks inside? If not, any idea which are closest?

We'll be in Cooperstown (DreamsPark) for a week, and I'm wanting to bookend our week with a side trip to NYC and/or Washington, DC. I know we'll need a rental to go between the Albany station & Cooperstown, and would like suggestions.

Also, if anyone has advice for travelling btw Albany & NYC / DC via the rails, share away!!

From Albany to NYC, Amtrak runs Empire Service trains. From NYC to DC you have the choice of Acela or Northeast Corridor trains, both of which run multiple times a day.

HOWEVER right now rail traffic into and out of NY is very limited. In fact Amtrak Northeast Corridor trains are only running to Newark, NJ right now. It's going to be at least another week before transportation around NY is back to normal.

For the roomettes on the AutoTrain, I believe there are steps to the upper bunk, and the toilets are not in the roomettes but down the corridor. You may be thinking of the bedrooms which have a toilet and shower.

For the train going from NYC to Florida roomettes do have toilet and a sink, but no shower. It is the difference between a viewliner and superliner trains. I forget which is which but one has toilets in the roomettes and one doesn't.

Guess I should've been clearer...the baseball trip is not until this summer :goodvibes

Good to hear... We can't wait to board either. (We board at 3am)...getting aboard and seated ( we do coach the first leg) and stretching back, snuggling in our blankets, anticipating the travel to WDW relaxes us as we roll down the tracks... Nothing better than a train trip to WDW....enjoy!!

Viewliners have toilets in the Roomette, Superliners do not. Viewliners are used on routes that pass through the northeast corridor, Superliners are used pretty much everywhere else including on the Autotrain.

How many points is it it for a bedroom?
Can you give us some tips on accruing points? Is this through the Amtrak Master Card?
