Hi AustralianKaren, were you able to purchase your resale points and disney direct while here in Australia or did you have to do it while you were in the US. Also DVC direct said they cannot give us any information due to australian laws.

Also we have been told that resale points after 2011 you cant use some of the benefits original members have. If we purchase we want to be able to use them for resorts outside of Disney, if that makes sense.

We purchased resale from here, easy process...disney direct is when you are in the USA, as is add ons.

That is correct, points bought resale after 2011 are not able to be used outside of the DVC system.

I would suggest buy DVC points on resale at near half the price of Disney points and only plan to use in the DVC system. Use other means or timeshare to use outside Disney. Only my opinion!

hi there,

we bought DVC resale purely to use at WDW/DL resorts..so it works well for us.
Saves us heaps over cash prices for the resorts. ie: 7 nights at bwv would be around $3000 (107 points)...we paid just that for our 60 points, so using less than 2 years of points we have broken even....excluding yearly fees of $300.

Our BLT points we can use anywhere but we will only use them WDW/DL as we can get cheaper prices for other types of accom elsewhere, ie: sydney CBD $127 ...4.5 star hotel on wotif.

using your points outside WDW/DL or on a disney cruise is a waste IMO.....so if you use your points in value seasons you get major bang for your buck:thumbsup2

I'm assuming 'outside the system' means RCI exchanges or similar? Definitely not the best use of DVC points. DVC is expensive and you get the best value using it within the system, not exchanging out to less expensive non-DVC resorts in other locations.

100 at Kidani through Disney. Will add-on through Timeshare store around about our next trip in Sep next year. Probably another 100 or so. May add at OKW if we dont add at Kidani.
Best thing we ever did. Dont use the points outside of Disney as it s a waste of money IMO. And as we go every three years, we use 3 years worth at one time. Gives us a 2 bed unit for 10-11 days as we usually go Sep/Oct. If we add another 100, then we have the chance to 1) double the length of our stay or 2) go every 2 years rather than three.
Win / win for us.

Gosh I wish wdw wasn't so far away, I would totally buy DVC, but those airfares just don't get any cheaper do they? Can we chip in for a DVC private plane?

Exactly my problem too - the darn AIRFARES!!! (and ours are even higher than yours ex Aus) :worried:

Thanks everyone for your help, we will keep researching. as a large family we will always need (for at least another 10 years) a 2 bedroom, so will look at maybe buying some and then renting off others. As the flight costs are so expensive we want to at least be staying for a min of 2 weeks every time we go. Excel here I come, figure crunching time :)

We have 330 points that we purchased on our last trip i know lots of people say to buy resale but all the people we spoke to on our cruise said they had purchased direct for there own peace of mind.
Although the value is not as good we do intend on using ours for cruises and RCI if we are not going to be using them at Disney and that is one of the reasons we were happy to buy direct we did our finance through Disney but to buy direct you have to be on US soil to do it.
Good luck with your number crunching :)

it depends on how many there are of you.....as there are only 2 of us, we get a whole lot more bang for our buck as we can studio at any resort for twice the length of time you guys need for a 1 bedroom...

those of you with families of 5 etc ..have you thought of 2 studios rather than 1 bedroom...

my next use of points is in feb @ CGH for 8 days, then 8 days at BWV in sept...that then takes me to a total 44 days at a DVC resort using the points.

useage so far:
10 nights BLT studio LV
10 nights BLT 1 bedroom LV
8 nights Aulani studio pool view
8 nights GCH studio
8 nights BWV 1 bedroom (TBC)

so if you look at cash price for these (aprox $21,000) we have fairly much broken even on our DVC purchases......

I love my DVC:yay:

Karen how many points do you have and when did you buy them?

BLT 160 points (disney direct)bought sept 2010
Vero beach 60 (resale timeshare store) bought feb 2012

I will use 180 points for my AKL/BWV stay in sept 2013..using uy 2013,2014,2015.....180 in total

that leaves me 160 BLT for 2014....

As of last night we had decided to buy a small amount resale (dipping our toes in) and try and rent some points for our september trip. Depending on how that goes we may purchase more from disney or keep buying resale. This of course could all change within the next 24 hours, and of course it depends on if any points become available. We only want to buy points from either BW, BC maybe BLT as DH wants a resort that is walking distance to at least one of the parks. Are any of the other resorts in walking distance?
