Help with resale add on

Hi,

I could use some help from all of you. I currently have 200 VGC points with a Sept use year. These 200 points were purchased direct from Disney. They are in two separate 100 point contracts. I have really enjoyed using the points and I am ready to add on.

I'm thinking about buying an additional 175 points at SSR that are a Dec use year. These are through the re-sale market. I understand that the resale points have some Disney related restrictions on them.

Since they are different use years, I'm thinking Disney won't put the SSR points in the same account as the VGC points.

Do any of you have any advice on this? What kind of issues will I run into? With the combination of points, there is a resale vs. direct issue, and Sept use year vs. Dec issue.

I appreciate any advice you can offer.

DVC will not put the new contract in your original membership with a different Use Year. You will have two unique memberships.

You will be able to combine the points to make reservations by transferring from one membership to the other and it will not affect your ability to transfer points to another member. You can also reserve individual days using each account and then have MS link the reservations together.

As for restrictions, the resale purchase cannot be used for reservations in the Disney Collection (DCL, other Disney or WDW resorts, etc.), Concierge Collection or Adventurer Collection (the new resale points cannot be combined with your other points for these either) , but they can still be used for the World Passport Collection (RCI) and all DVC resorts. Even if your resale had the same Use Year and was combined with your original membership, these restrictions would be in place.

Managing two memberships can easily be accomplished with the details available on the DVC Member website and a little diligence on your part. We have three different Use Years at two different resorts and have had as many as four in the past without any issue managing the accounts. Our resales were purchased prior to the current restrictions so that has never been an issue.

Enjoy! :)

I've been meaning to ask this, as I have heard this before, but not consistently. Can you confirm that I am understanding this correctly: if I transfer points between my own accounts, then this doesn't count towards my "one transfer per U/Y" limit? So I could still transfer my transferred points to another member? Is there a limit to how often I can transfer to myself?

Thanks Doc for your expertise! This would make managing different U/Y's so much easier!

While MS has been reported to be more lenient in this area (unlimited transfers between memberships belonging to the same member), this is an accommodation that is not contained in the current Home Resort Rules and Regulations**. I have no reason to believe MS will stop offering this courtesy, but some members have reported that they were refused when they asked to do such a transfer. (I assume they called back and got another CM to do it or they asked for a Supervisor and were able to complete the extra transfers. Not all CMs are equally informed/trained). Just be aware that as it currently stands, transfers between memberships owned by the same member are courtesies, not entitlements.

** The rules for transfers are in Section II (II. USING HOME RESORT VACATION POINTS), #6 (Transferring Home Resort Vacation Points Between Club Members). Item k. states "During a given Use Year, only one (1) Transfer per Club Member or Club membership, either as Transferee or Transferor, will be permitted".

P.S. Above is my interpretation of the rules. Others (including MS) may interpret them differently. :)

Thanks to all of you for replying. I appreciate the advice and knowledge. It will help with our decision!

Another thing to remember is that ms is only human and errors may happen and there may also be glitches with the computer system that when corrections need to be made by ms, cause more problems. We own many contracts, but opted for the same UY. Over all the years we have owned we have not lost a single point, but it still takes diligence. You are able to view your accounts online and see the points activity and number of points transferred in. Sometimes there may be errors with this. I say this because we have not transferred any points between our contracts or memberships, yet each year we see a number of points transferred in and must call to correct this. The only advice I would give is to keep very good track of your point balance. Only you can determine if you can manage the extra effort of an additional UY.

Do you have a reason why you would prefer a December UY for these points? If not, I would suggest you look around for a Sept UY just to make things easier. Unlike VGC, there are a lot of choices of SSR on the resale market, and you should be able to find just what you want.
