Disney Wonder or RC Liberty of The Seas?

Hi All -

My husband and I are looking to cruise in Jan. 2013 and this will be our first. We have narrowed it down to either the Disney Wonder or Royal Caribbean Liberty of the Seas. Both are 5 days and have somewhat similar itineraries. We do not have children and are both just about 30 yrs old. We love all things Disney and even had our honeymoon at Disney World.

I am hoping to get some feedback from previous cruisers to see what the pros and cons of each cruise might be. I know a big plus for us is that DCL allows you to bring your own beer/wine on board, so that would be a huge savings to us.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

We've "Wondered" 3 times as adults only. None of those has been a 5 night cruise. We had no issues with the Wonder, staff, etc. We dont like short cruises, and did have an issue with an extended family in multiple cabins along the hallway--the kids were allowed to run wild and didn't seem able to know which cabins belonged to their family; several times we had knocks on our door when they were looking for a cousin (despite a single sign on my door which we do in order to make it easier to identify the door as ours). Once is an accident, 3 times is "Quit bothering me and find your negligent parents."

No comment on RC. We did really like the food on Celebrity (RC's more upscale sister line). However, we found the entertainment on Disney to be better. Family has overruled me; next scheduled cruise is on Disney.....but those almond croissants were GOOD.

I've been on the Magic and the Liberty. I'd take the Wonder, hands down.

I love the Freedom class ships from RCCL, but IMHO nothing tops Disney in terms of service and entertainment. Food is about equal. The Wonder will have less "to do" compared to the Liberty: rock climbing wall, on-board surfing, etc if you're into those sorts of activities. The "adult" stuff in terms of spa, excursions, bars, are really equivalent.

DH and I did the Wonder for our honeymoon cruise 10 years ago, have done 3 RCCL, and 1 trip on the Magic. Taking the kids on the Fantasy in December, and he and I both agree that if money and itinerary is no issue, we'll go Disney.

I have only cruised Disney but I don't think you'd be disappointed at all with The Wonder. The magic of Disney is everywhere on the ship. People are friendly ALL the time. I always leave the cruise wishing for another week!!!

My boyfriend and I went on our first Disney cruise in Feb 2011. We are going on the Dream again in December since we had such a great time. We are in our early 30's with no kids. There was always enough to do and not get bored, however we did love lounging on the upper decks in the sun with our books. My boyfriend had been on a Royal Caribbean ship before, but he said that Disney had great service in comparison. We truly loved our Castaway Cay day. Hope you have a great time on whatever trip you decide.

We haven't been on a Disney cruise yet (we leave on our first in two weeks ,) but we've had very good luck with RCCL. We haven't been on the Liberty, but we've been on several other ships. We're Disney fans too, enough that we own DVC and generally go to WDW a couple of times a year, but we've been quite happy with RCCL. There is a lot to do for active adults - the ice skating and rock wall on the sea can really be fun. We've also really enjoyed wine tastings, cocktail tastings, and swimming in the solarium (adults only pool), all of which I'm sure there are counterparts to on DCL.

If you care about gambling at all, DCL does not have it, RCCL does. Both do have bingo (for cash winnings). As you've heard, you can bring your own alcohol onboard with Disney. They charge a corking fee if you want your own wine opened with your meal, but you are free to drink in your room. We've generally traveled at concierge level lately on RCCL and so got free alcohol in the lounge in the evenings anyway.

From what I understand, the nightlife is much better on RCCL. (Certainly we enjoyed it before we had kids, or when my DM traveled with us and watched the kids in the evening.) I understand the shows are generally better on DCL, but that's just repeating what I've read on the boards, although I believe it.

I don't think you can make a bad choice here, you're choosing between two different but good options. We have a DCL cruise booked for this year, and an RCCL cruise booked for next yet.

Having been on the Wonder twice, my vote would be Liberty. You will have far more to do on the ship then what The Wonder has to offer. Only nod Disney gets is Castaway, but for a 5 day, you'll want more adult activities.

I've seen this happen on other lines, it is what is, usually during the summer months when more kids aboard

you are past/near final payment day for a January '13 cruise.

between cruise week ending today and the last minute deals that will roll out after final payment date (not so much DCL which tends to book early) you likely will be able to find a great deal on RCCL.

We've gone on many DCL cruises, and while we love the Dream, the Wonder is a favorite.

imo all the lines' larger ships we've sailed have had wonderful points and we've enjoyed them all, even NCL and it's very luck-luster food on our Star sailing.

Other than DCL sailings, for us it's about the itinerary and price. Typically we can book 2 - 3 CCL sailings for price of comparable on DCL; so we tend to only sail DCL one every year or two and for shorter, add on WDW trips.
