Costa Maya Good Mexican Food

I did a search, but couldn't really find what I wanted. My boyfriend and I are going on the Western Caribbean 8-night out of Galveston on Jan 4. He wants three things out of the cruise 1. To swim with dolphins 2. One beach day 3. Good authentic Mexican food.

I booked a dolphin excursion out of Cozumel, but I am thinking Costa Maya might be our Mexican food/beach day.

Does anyone know if there is a good/clean place to eat some authentic Mexican food near the port? Or will we need to go into town. If we do need to go into town how long does it take to get there, and would we have time to still have a night beach day after getting some grub?

Second part to the question, what is the best beach and do I need to prebook to get there or could we just get a cab/use a shuttle when we get off the ship?

Any information regarding either question would be really appreciated, thanks!:goodvibes

The only complaint that I had about Tropacante is that we didn't get a detailed bill at the end, our bill was around 80.00 with food and drinks, we didn't order that much and my wife paid while I was out on a jetski, and I asked her "did you look at the bill" after we were back on the boat and she said they just gave her a total(including tip)..we had two plates, maybe 5 beers and some mixed drinks..just some advise keep track or ask them to break down your bill for you if you question it..

Oh thanks for the tip!!

The Maya chan does look nice, but we don't drink so I don't know if we would get our $90 worth with just the beach and buffet. I am not a huge eater so I don't know if it would be worth it.

We didn't enjoy our time at Tropicante last week. We were packed in like sardines as it was very busy. Beer was warm, (but only $2) even though we were some of the 1st people on the beach so it's not like they had run out of the cold stuff. We paid, packed up and moved down the beach to El Captian Mono where we were not sitting on other people's laps. Beer was a buck more but very cold, with limes and salt on the side. Food (we had fish tacos) was good too.

Good to know, how far away was El Captian Moro from Tropicante?

It was perhaps a 2-5 minute slow stroll down the beach. Facing the ocean, walk to the right, red umbrellas. Oh and just checked to be sure, and it's Mono, not Moro, sorry!

I recommend Tropicante as well. Steve and his staff were all great. Food was good too.

Heart attack platter. It's good for 4 people!

This looks great! How bad was the sea-grass? Was the water clear otherwise?

The beach was very clean--they worked on it all the time it seemed. The water was not bad, but we knew what to expect. My son enjoyed the ecology angle of knowing what the grass and coloured water was all about.

If the dolphin experiences are similar in Cozumel and Costa Maya, I would consider switching your dolphin and beach day. We were on the October 13 cruise and found the beach at Cozumel to be significantly nicer than the Costa Maya. We knew about the sea grass in Costa Maya but found it took away from the overall swimming experience. The beach and water in Cozumel were much nicer imho.

Thanks for the tip, I will look onto that. What beach did you go to in Cozumel?
