8 week rookie running program by sparkpeople

Uh oh! Does that mean what I think it means?? lol That you've been doing one less rep than required each week? ;)

Awesome Mullysisters! Even walking it is so much better than doing NOTHING!

Not sure I can help with calorie counting. I usually low carb and don't pay attention to calories. Just make sure you take measurements because once you start building up muscle through exercise, it is more dense and weighs more than fat so you can't always trust your scale. I usually just go by the fit of my clothes.

I won't hit the track until tomorrow night. Going to aim for 5 reps of 3 min. runs and 1 min. walks. That's only 20 minutes and we have been doing 30 minutes so hoping it's not TOO bad.

Gosh, I can remember when 30 seconds of jogging felt like death to me back in April. It's fun to see progress being made! :cheer2:

Thankfully I think just week 4 and 5. For what I thought was week four I only did 4 reps of walk 2 jog 3. So I'm going to try to work up to 6 reps this week but I'm going to be behind you for sure. The 5 reps kicked my butt last night. Tomorrow I'll do 5 again and then hopefully I can get to 6 over the weekend. I may try to start cutting down my walking time as I go so that I can move on to the 1 minute walk by sometime next week too.

Just don't feel like you have to rush because of me. I have a feeling I'm going to be stuck in between Week #5 and #6 for a while, LOL!

I finished the 3 runs of Week one. The first run was the hardest and the third set the easiest, I hope that continues!!
Starting week two today. I've finally started to lose a little, so that is a motivator.
I pulled out my "possible" clothes for Disney. It is getting cool here in central Ontario but I'm hoping for warmer weather in December at Disney. I have some summer clothes I should fit into if I could lose about 1-2" from my waist.

That's great! I found the first few weeks to definitely feel easier by the 3rd day. Its so nice to feel like you are accomplishing something!

Tonight I will do at least 5 sets of walk 2 run 3 but I'm hoping to add an extra set in there if I can. But we'll see.

Awesome for both of you! :dance3:

I went to track last night after meeting a girlfriend for drinks/appys. WHAT A HUGE MISTAKE!

I planned on doing 6 reps of 3 min. runs/1 min. walks (instead of the 8 reps) - my modification of Week #6.

Oh my word, my calf muscles cramped up in the first rep. Then my stomach started hurting throughout. I forgot to pack my socks so blisters began forming (I rubbed the skin off a few places, ouch!) And... my bra straps kept falling down every 10-15 seconds so I was distracted by that, lol! After a few reps, I literally thought I was going to throw up. I couldn't make the full 3 minutes on 2 of the reps.

Worst part about going to a track and getting sick is having to walk all the way back to your car and then drive home. I wanted to die. I collapsed on the floor as soon as I walked into my condo, lol.

UGH!

But I managed for the most part to get done what I set out to do. It can only get easier from here, right? :dance3:

I'm going to be honest, I didn't do anything this weekend. We had a lot going on and I just didn't have the energy for anything else. DD ended up being gone all weekend and so I didn't have anyone to help with DS. And I don't like to go down while he's napping because he can get out of his crib and I wouldn't hear him.

I'm hoping to get in some time tonight or tomorrow but this week is going to be crazy too. You're going to be way ahead of me by the time I get up and going again. I'm not stopping but I will probably have to back track some.

Dont' worry, KT. I didn't get to gym at all this weekend either. My intentions were to go Saturday morning, but nope, too lazy (at least you have a valid excuse!!!). Same thing happened Sunday afternoon.... Decided to stay home and make apple pie instead, lol. Now I have a stupid pie calling my name at all hours of the day/night...

I DID go to the track tonight and did 6 reps of 3 minute runs/1 minute walks. Wasn't too bad even with taking weekend off.

I'm going to TRY and up it to 8 reps on Thursday and see how I do. :woohoo:

So, after finishing Day 1 of Week 2 things began to get in the way. I had to stay in the city then Sandy hit. Today I'm going to do W2D2, I hope to run/walk for the next three days to catch up. I actually find the exercise easier if I run every day.
I am losing weight at about 2lbs a week which is pretty slow based on my food intake. I guess it is my age as everyone suggests.
I'm going to carry on because I am eating a really healthy diet, regardless of weight loss!
I can now fit into my capris for my trip but it seems that it is going to be a Christmas trip complete with cool-ish weather! What no swimming:sad:

Good for you for sticking with it! And every day?? Wow, you're motivated! I have to DRAG myself to the gym every 2-3 days (I put it off as long as I can, lol).

Two lbs. a week is awesome!! You know what they say.... slow and steady wins the race. Keep up the good work!!

It's always FANTASTIC when you can fit into a pair of pants that you couldn't previously. :yay:

You may get lucky with your Christmas trip. Sometimes it's cold, but sometimes it's hot enough to swim. Sometimes you get a mix of both weather extremes in one trip!

I'm not due to run until tomorrow night. I try to stick to a Monday/Thursday/Saturday schedule, but for the past 2 weeks, I've wimped out on the Saturday run. Bad bad bad...

Thank you for helping me to find this program :goodvibes

I tried the C25K program, and got to week 7 (4k run), but couldn't continue due to my dodgy legs  It has now been nearly a month since I did any training, and Im looking for something a bit easier on my legs - hoping if I take it slower they will be able to build up a bit of strength!

Speaking of which, I also found a great strength training program for runners on sparkpeople! Which I will be doing on my non-running days as cross-training.

I am determined to make the best of the body I've been given (which is really NOT designed for running :rotfl:) and get my RunDisney medal!

And as a side note, the nutrition tracking tool seems so easy, I might just start using that too!

Well after doing Wk2 Day1 I got off track. With the snow and cold and getting home from work late I have not done the rest of week 2. My diet is going well although I stuck again at this new weight.
I had a cheat day today to get my metabolism going. I plan on starting running again tomorrow!
Thanks you for your kind responses.

Ugh. My decrepit body is falling apart on me!!

I've been struggling to do week #6 (so far have completed 2 days of it although man, it's KILLING me!).

Last run, I had left hip problems and right ankle problems. Was practically limping the last couple of reps.

NOW 2 days later, my right knee is hurting pretty bad. I can hardly put pressure on it. I live on the 3rd floor and getting down the stairs this morning was brutal.

Gosh darn it, I usually tape my LEFT knee because that's the one that's always acted up. Now I've lost my right knee too??? Probably the only good joint left on my body and it just went. :(

I'm going to have to take the rest of the week off. I can hardly walk, nevermind try to run on it.

Welcome! pixiedust:

I too had to quit C25K because it became too difficult on my body. I got hung up on week #4 or #5. You progressed quite far!! Congrats!

Let us know your progress!

I've had a brick wall right now so not sure how I'll be progressing at this point, but I really really don't want to quit.

Sorry to hear you're having such trouble with your knees. Have you seen a physio or sports doctor or anyone about it?

I just did my first 'run' this morning. After having gotten so far with the C25K it seemed like a bit of waste of time aerobically :rotfl: but so far so good with my shins, so fingers crossed it stays that way! Having said that though, my whole body aches from the strength training I did yesterday!

No, I haven't seen a doctor. Hate to admit it, but I'm as bad as a man when it comes to seeing doctors. I doubt they can do anything other than surgery, and I'll wait until I can't walk anymore before I look into that!

After taking a week off, I braced my knee and went for a run this morning at the track. Went okay for the first 6 reps, but then I found myself starting to limp so I called it quits. Was supposed to do 8 reps, but with my knee the way it is, I just didn't want to push it.

I plan on doing Week #6 again this week and hopefully move onto Week #7 next week (or a modified version of it)..... depending on how my knees/hips/ankles hold out, LOL!

Hope everyone is doing okay with the program?

I REALLY want to do my first 5K this spring, but gosh, I can't help but feel discouraged. I've been at this since April and am still not ready.

It could be worth seeing some sort of medical professional. You never know what they'll have to say until you go. They might be able to help you without surgery. Even if they do say you need surgery, it might be best for you to know all the information available so then you can make an informed decision about what the best option is. Wouldn't you prefer not to get to the point where you can't even walk anymore?

I hope you have some luck this week and are able to move on to week 7 :goodvibes

I managed to complete week 1 fairly uneventfully. No pain as such, but towards the end of the running intervals I could definitely feel my legs taking some impact, so I hope the extra minute of running next week doesn't cause any pain. If it does, I'll be pausing the program until I've been able to get to the physio again.

Today my Dad had a heart attack. He is stable in hospital awaiting surgery. A smoker all of his life. He is the kindest, gentle man I've ever known. He took me to Disney World for the first time in 1979.
So, I'm signing off, I just wanted to share this with you.
I called the Disney reservation line to cancel my reservation for Nov 29th. That is less than three weeks They asked why and so I told them.
Disney is refunding my entire payment without penalty, I was crying on the phone and thanking the lady for their kindness. She was so nice.
Of course the money doesn't matter compared with my Dad's health issues but the Pixie Dust pixiedust: I received today really helped. I'm sad not to be going to see Christmas at WDW for the first time and hopefully I'll be back next year when my Dad is well again.
Best Wishes, keep moving, Kelly

Kelly I'm so sorry to hear about your dad. My thoughts are with you and your family and I hope he recovers quickly :goodvibes

You're right, the money is very minor compared to your dad's health, but still a much appreciated dose of pixie dust I imagine pixiedust:

Gosh, how scary for you! I'm so sorry to hear about your dad. Sending even more pixie dust your way. :wizard: Here's to a fantastic trip to WDW next Christmas in celebration of your Dad's recovery!

Come back to us when you can. I'll still be here slowly plodding away, lol.

Hugs, girlie  Hang in there!
