Any rumor when 2014 dates come out?

The person i spoke with on the phone from DCL stated there would not be an email notification sent out unless there was new iternaries being posted?! ?! So many conflicting stories...who knows what to believe!!

This is sounding like the presidential race. We better get the Fact Finders in to clear things up for all of us. :)

So do you think the travel agent really talked to the disney supervisor or is this just a bunch of hoowey?

I know my travel agent fairly well and I don't believe for a second she would lie about this. There would be absolutely no gain for her to do so.

So I believe she did phone Disney Cruise Lines and ask for a supervisor, whether she actually talked to a supervisor or a random person would be a matter for conjecture.

I think if we assume that people on this messageboard are fairly honest, that Disney is giving completely different answers to people on almost a daily basis so who knows if it is the truth.

As for a couple of other comments

The same travel agent just returned from a 23 day Mediterranean Cruise. She has done it twice before and said that it was worse this time. At all ports in Spain, Italy and Greece the cruise ship received gunship escorts into port and they were checked in through customs by soldiers with machine guns. She said protests in Barcelona and Athens totally messed with tourist activities as traffic was slowed to gridlock because of them. Yes protests are a regular thing in southern Europe but with forced austerity they are far worse right now than normal.

As for changing 2013 as well, I think it is a totally different animal to start mucking with cruises that have been announced and as we understand at least in the case of the longer Mediterrean cruises have sold fairly well. This is totally different from changing a plan for an unannounced schedule in 2014.

Frankly, I hope the employee at Disney is completely off base and the cruises are announced tomorrow but that is the message we got.

What cruise line and ship did your TA sail on with the gunship escorts and such? You would have thought someone on Cruise Critic would have mentioned it. That site is very current with cruise news.

Changing itineraries or canceling itineraries can be done and has been done by DCL and other cruise lines recently. If the protests are so bad that gunship escorts and customs checks with soldiers with machine guns are being used... the cruise line have and will cancel cruises or change itineraries of even cruises that have sold well if they fear for the safety of their passengers.

Here is the email I got

Good Morning Sean, I have have talked with agents @ Disney yesterday and a supervisor this morning. They" are not sure @ this time they will be in the mediterranean in 2014." (I am quoting.) They also said you (gold/silver or platinum) will be first to be contacted should there be a sailing/early booking. I would also be e-mailed/ phoned to alert you /Shelagh. Now, I have just returned from 23 days in Med. 15 day cruise/Oceania plus pre and post in Barcelona and Istanbul. In every port we had naval ships(manned) plus miiltary presence while we were docked. Ashod/Israel was particularly intense. Our 2 stops to Egypt were cancelled 1 week before sailing due to violence in Syria. In short , I think Disney, is going to wait and see how it goes with their presence in med /2013.There are also many problems with cutbacks/ and the euro/Spain,Greece ,Italy. We had two demonstrations /Madrid and Barcelona just before we embarked on the cruise. Living in this peacefull country of Canada, it is a real contrast to be in Europe at present./ we also found it quite intimidating. The whole of the trip was wonderfull, but I am very, very glad to come home to this island. I will be monitoring Disney every day for any news, ect.re: 2014.. I did phone your mother yesterday(Maui) as well/after I got off phone with Disney. I will do some research/pricing ect. for you re: Cape Canaveral and get back to you with the info. Thankyou again

She did not say what she did in her email(irrelant to me as I will only Cruise with Mickey) but this one that left September 27th with Oceania Cruises lines up exactly with her description so I imagine this is it. She also said that the cruise was altered because they could not go to Egypt because of the violence in Syria. I imagine that is how they got to Athens, subbed for Alexandria.

15 Days Mediterranean - Oceania Mediterranean Cruises - Oceania Cruises - Marina
Barcelona, Ibiza, Valletta, Agios Nikolaos, Alexandria, Port Said, Jerusalem, Haifa, Limassol, Rhodes, Ephesus, Istanbul
1 departure date: September 27, 2012

Edit - I just read a review of the cruise on Cruise Critic, no mention of the gunboats and military but they did mention the cancellations in Egypt and problems in Israel -a long time getting to Jerusalem.

DH and I sailed (on Princess) out of Boston Harbor about a month after 9-11-01. Our pre-cruise flight landed at Logan Airport (where three of the ill-fated jets had flown out of) and there were uniformed national guard soldiers with machine guns on duty inside the terminal. Which made for a somber beginning to a long-awaited vacation.

As we sailed out of the Harbor, we were escorted by the U.S. Coast Guard, and they were quick to put their boat and their machine gun between us and any small craft that tried to approach the ship to wave bon voyage.

About 1/3 of the passengers on our cruise were no shows. So i understand why Disney is reluctant to schedule cruises to the med or Spain right now. Even if the protests go away over night (doubtful) it will takes months to change the perception to a safe, tourist-friendly environment.

From a UK perspective, we get clips on the news every night about the 'unsettlement' in Europe for obvious reasons. Now the protests in Spain and Greece have been going on for months and months, it's not a new thing at all.

Especially Greece, this has been going on for as long as I can remember, maybe even over 18 months. Greece is a popular holiday resort for us in the UK as it is only a few hours flight, and people are still going on holiday there with no issues at all, just as they are to Spain and Egypt.

To the OP it has kinda upset me that you have compared the unrest in Europe to that of scenes on or after 9/11. That outrageous, disgusting, soul destroying act of terrorism is very different to what some poor people are going through in Spain and Greece due to the poor Eurozone decisions. It's not comparable at all IMHO.

However, have gone slightly OT there, but felt that needed to be said. Many other cruise lines have their schedules announced for the whole of 2014 and they all include the usual Med ports. Not saying they wont be changed but I find it hard to believe that only DCL would hold back if this was the reason. This is DCL, we know they keep us hanging anyway.....

Well said and tactfully put. From some of these posts you would get the impression that it is unsafe for us Europeans to leave the front door. I can understand that DCL might want to avoid the Middle East ports (eastern med) put don't see why strikes and protests should have much effects on western med or Northern Europe itineraries.

Just checked the website no 2014 dates. More waiting. I really want to get a good price on a June 2014 eastern cruiseI called rccl yesterday but wasn't impressed. I know I would be so sad to see Disney ships pull into port and not be on it. Plus I didn't like their ports at all for the western which is what we are doing this sept w dcl

I looked thru all of 2012 on the U.S. State Department list of travel warnings for United States Citizens, and neither Spain nor Greece appears. The only country mentioned early in 2012 was Mexico (sorry meant to say that DCL travels to..).

As previous posters have said, every single morning at 8:30 a.m. I check the internet. But I don't check Disney or Disboards first, I check my email first to see if there is one from my TA saying I'm booked! Once there isn't one, I check here only to see another day of booking opportunity has come and gone

We were on the Mexican Riviera cruise in March earlier this year. When in Puerto Vallarta, there were soldiers with machine guns at the port. My husband has some family members about an hour and half away from the port who drove down to see us while we were there for the day. They were held up twice on the drive! They got away unscathed both times telling the robbers that they (the robbers) had more money than they did.

But other than that, we felt ok. I grew up on a military base, so seeing soldiers walking around with machine guns is the norm for me.

Totally agree.

In a friendly non judgemental way I aways find it a little bit amusing when DCL sails to Europe and the Disboard is filled with panic about how dangerous Europe is. If it isn't pick pocketing in Barcelona then it was scams in Naples or Rome.. Now the unrest and protests in Spain and Greece are top of the list of concerns.

The trouble in Spain and Greece is related to the economy, people without jobs protesting about their situation or people forced into deep austerity measures having watched those in government line their pockets. What we are not seeing is armed gangs attacking tourists (or general population)

A quick browse of US news websites shows a far higher level of gun crime and violent crime than are experienced in *most* European countries, a wider spread gang problem and plenty of areas where you mustn't go if you are a tourist. When we went to New York in the summer our local "big apple greeter" was lovely but advised us where on the map it was and was not safe to go and this was also advised by the hotel staff. Police are routinely armed in the US just as they are in parts of continental Europe (though not here in the UK)

I guess what I am saying is it is all about familiarity and perception. The threat to you as a tourist in Spain is probably no greater than to you walking round a major city in the US but because it is far away and unfamiliar there is a tendency to become alarmist.

Obviously some of the Middle Eastern ports are a different matter at the moment, but to intimate that it is possibly too dangerous for DCL to sail out of Spain is definitely painting a wholly inaccurate picture of what is happening in Spain at the moment.

Just my humble opinion,
Mel

Royal is up through April and May of 2014 with all their destinations. I only care when DCL puts theirs out because we are doing the September Panama Canal and want to do a Christmas, looking to see which works better 2013 or 2014.

No, Royal Caribbean (and most other cruise lines) don't have Alaska or Europe for 2014. **The only May 2014 RCI itineraries available to book are the Caribbean on Oasis and Allure of the Seas, and a Honolulu to Vancouver repo cruise.
