Tipping Question

We'll be on the Magic out of Galveston for 6 nights and have a question about tipping. There will be 5 in our cabin (2 adults and 3 kids (ages 7, 5, 2)). What should we plan for tips? I feel like there is a formula, but I can't find it.

DCL recommends $12 per person/per day. Within the past year they have started to automatically charge those to your onboard account, but you are free to adjust them as you see fit. You will need to stop by Guest Services to do that, or if you want to tip more, you can just put extra cash in the tip envelopes they will provide.

Tipping is recommended at $12 per person per night (yes, same for kids and adults). It will automatically be charged to your stateroom onboard account, however you can go to Guest Services to increase/decrease the amount, and/or just add cash to the envelopes.

So for us, it would be $12x5x6= $360. ? I assume that is right. And then we can add from there. What other tips should we plan for onsite? Porters? Anyone else?

I believe gratuities are included on all alcoholic drinks. Also, tipping for room service seems customary. I always tip the porters $1 per bag. We tipped extra at Palo's even though it is stated somewhere that it is included. And we did tip extra to our wait staff because they were just fabulous!

Tipping for room service is normal, but I sure don't tip $1 per item. If my dd wants 3 packages of Rice Krispies and 3 cartons of milk, there is no way that is a $6 tip from me (others may disagree.) The suggested tip for the dining server is $4 per day, which represents his efforts for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I'm not giving more than that to the guy who spends less than 10 minutes delivering a tray.

That said, I tip room service $2-$5 depending on the size of the order, but I've never given more than $5 for a single delivery. Sorry if that makes me cheap.

If you use the porters at the terminal, $1-2 per bag is customary. Tips to drivers and/or guides on excursions is up to you.

Ditto to bus drivers to or from the port. What I do in that case--if they drove with my body in the seat, I don't tip. If they handled luggage, I tip appropriate to the amount of luggage involved. If you use a limo/towncar service, a tip of 20% is expected. If you book round trip, tip 10% of the total each way...for instance, total cost = $250, tip $25 on the way there and $25 on the way home. You likely won't have the same driver both times. Also, look at your contract to be sure that it doesn't include the tip.(some do).

This is us as well.

In ports if we take a cab, generally we will round up our total-we have have never paid more than $20 each way for a cab ride. (so usually 2-4 bucks tip per cab ride)
