Biggest Loser Run/Walker Thread 2012/13--Everyone Welcome! :)

Just checked the Wine and Dine race thread- I'm in corral B( 2166-4535) so I believe you will be in C. Sorry I did not write all the corral placements down.
No worries - just hoping I'd be in C. Sounds like I will. :) And DH will be in A again.

QOTW: What do you like to wear when you are running? Do you like to dress up for your races?
In warmer weather, I like running shorts and a tech shirt. My most comfy pair of shorts were a cheap pair I got on the clearance rack at Sports Authority. They are really lightweight and just fit right on me. They don't have the bells and whistles that nicer running shorts have, you know, like pockets. :upsidedow So they aren't ideal for long runs unless I wear a belt for my stuff. I haven't quite found my groove for long runs in cool weather.

I would like to dress up for races but never really get a solid idea together that I can make and run in. And honestly, I know I'm going to stop for photos, so I want something that looks flattering. I had a custom shirt made for Wine & Dine last year. It said "I thought this was the Electrical Parade". I had wanted to decorate it will little lights but ran out of time to make that happen. For Wine & Dine this year I thought about going as a waitress, but a few weeks ago I saw this cute skirt that looks like Minnie on the clearance rack at Target. I'm going to wear it over black capris and probably wear a black shirt and mouse ears, which I still have to buy. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to go with long or short sleeves.

Well my 5 mile trail race into a 7 miler due to the trails not being as clearly marked as organizers stated. Several runners were lost and I helped one women carry her toddler who was clearly pooped out-DH was so worried that I was 20 minutes past my usual time he sent out a search party-by that time though I was on the right track and headed for the finish- My DS did the 2 1/2 mile route and placed 1st in his age divison:thumbsup2. Was happy to have a free pancake breakfast awaiting me- and since the temps for FL was in the low 60's it made for a pleasent morning run. All in all a good prep for the W/D.

Just for Rose- Gators play SC today-GOOOOOO GATORS:cool1:CHOMP CHOMP;);)

Congrats on your 7 miler?! :upsidedow Sorry it wasn't 5 like you expected. Sounds like it was not well-organized for so many people to be lost!

*********
I have been taking it easy the past few days since DH is out of town and I want to make sure I can complete my last long run before W&D. I was supposed to do it over the weekend, but with DH gone there was no way I was getting in a 4-hour run (DD is too big for a jogging stroller and I didn't want to get a sitter). So 15 miler tomorrow! I've been doing some core exercises and walking, so hopefully I've done enough to keep my fitness up on my marathon training plan. I'm off to download some more podcasts for tomorrow!

We are back and I am pooped! It is a lot of work to keep up with (6) 21 yos for 5 days, but we did it. I will try to pop in later with an update.

BTW, Dottie, I do love you, but your fellow gator fans--not so much. If one more person at wdw would have chomped IN MY FACE they might have found themselves armless, just sayin. ;) But other than the game we had a fabulous time. :)

Love you too Rose:goodvibes, and let me appologize for my rude fellow gator fans- there is a proper etiquette to the Chomp and it is not in someone's face.:sad2:- Hoping we take a bite outa GA next week!

Hi! I'm really new to running, (I'm really a run/walker right now), but I hope it's not too late to join!!

Name: Jessica
DisName: disneytink29
Upcoming Races: Caine Halter Lungs 4 Life 5k 11/3/12, Greenville Zombie Run (a 5k) 11/3/12
Completed Races in 2012 (or earlier): Happy Haunts 5k at WDW - my 1st 5k!
Favorite Race: None yet!!
Anything else you want to share (age, where you live, etc): I'm 31, I live in Greenville, SC, and I had surgery to remove a benign brain tumor on 5/9/12, so I'm working my way back to being completely fit and healthy!!
And for fun, favorite running shoe: I have a couple pairs of Nike running shoes, but I'm behind the curve as far as being fitted, etc.

Rose glad that you had a great time at WDW. Sorry for the Gator problems -- those Carolina shirts were probably like a red flag to a bull . . . ;)

:welcome: Jessica! Nice to have you join our group! What a wonderful way to celebrate your recovery by doing something fun and healthy. Looks like you have a couple of 5Ks coming up. Good luck! :yay:

I'm in my favorite part of training for the W&D -- taper! :thumbsup2 I still have several short runs, a speed workout and a 4 miler but I'm glad to be done with the long runs for now -- 15 miles last week-end on the indoor track makes for good mental preparation. :teeth:

How is everyone doing?

Completed Races in 2012 (or earlier): Crawdad 5K (Ozark, AL)

Must admit, I'm more of a walker than a runner right now. I've only done the one 5K, and, of course, the most important thing is that I finished, nevermind the 57 minute time.

I was curious if there's anyone doing the Biggest Loser races, especially in Panama City on December 30?
Hi Kim! I still need to add you to the first page. When is your walk in Panama City? Congratulations on finishing your first race!

For those of us running the Wine and Dine Waivers can be printed- I'm bib # 3822!:thumbsup2 I figure that puts me around corral C! :yay:I'll be driving up Saturday Mid morning and staying at All Star Sports- plan to head to the expo then Down Town Disney for Lunch then check in for a nap- DH and DS will head to Epcot and meet me at the finish. Ran 9 on Sunday and was happy with the run-I have a 5mile Trail race this weekend then the following weekend want to do 12-15 depending on the legs- will keep the last two weeks before the wine and dine light with just 6miles each for the long run. If anyone else knows their bib #'s please post -

Dottie
I see you figured it out, but I assumed we would be in B again. Are you running the whole thing or run/walking? I am looking for a 10 mpm average, but will run/walk.

Hi All

I need your opinion. The weather here is starting to turn yucky :( We have 4-6 weeks max of run/walking outside before it just won't be possible anymore. Last night it was in the 40's and we were getting pelted with light sleet- not to mention it is pitch black on the school track! I get the begeezus scared out of me every time someone passes me in the dark.

Anyhow, to my question.... I'm wondering if I should get a 3or 4 month gym membership over the winter and continue my run/walking.

I question it because I really don't want to. I have never run on a treadmill and I HATE exercising in front of other people. I even make my kids and husband leave the living room when I do Zumba. And I am quite the Zumba expert!

Secondly, I don't feel as if I have really progressed in my running ( been doing it since August ) so I don't feel I will lose much over the winter.

I would continue with Zumba and yoga over the winter and my daily indoor walks at work.

Maybe I'm missing something as I am new to the run/walking.... Currently I run for 60 seconds and walk 90. I do that for 30 minutes. I really don't seem to get any better than that. Or maybe I am right where I should be?

Thanks for any advise :)
So here are my thoughts. I agree that a lot of it has to do with your long term goals. If however your anxiety is keeping you from even thinking about long term goals, then read on. In Dec 2009 I rejoined the Y and I hated it. I felt so self conscious and miserable every time I went. And I felt fat. But I stuck with it. I realized after awhile that no one really cared about what I was doing. They were all there to do their own thing. Only once in over two years did someone give me a "look" about run/walking on the treadmill--and honestly at this point I could care less. :)

Having said all that, I think (from experience) that the treadmill is a really good way to work on speed and fitness. I have been using the treadmill to push my walking and am now able to consistently walk at ~14 minutes per mile. You do have to be conscious of not over doing it, but I found it really helped me to learn what certain speeds feel like.

Whatever you decide, there is no right or wrong answer, the important thing is to do something to stay fit.

I guess I hadn't realized there were Biggest Loser races. :upsidedow I will have to look into them. Welcome! All levels of walking and running fit in well here at WISH. :wave2:

Eek! I'm bib #5891. Not sure what that means. I've only ever been in B or C for Disney races, but maybe I've been moved back. :confused3 Or Dottie, maybe you're in B this year. I'm happy to be more with people at my own pace, just feel bad that DH always finish over an hour before me. Last year he took a nap in Ellen's Energy Adventure while waiting - a private showing as there was only one other guest in there!

So that ALTRAs - on Friday I really wasn't sure I liked them, something in the footbed felt weird. I peeled up the insole and found a second rubbery insole underneath. I had totally forgotten these came with an optional stability "wedge", as they call it. If your feet are neutral, you remove it. The shoes felt so much more normal after I took that out! Did a short 30 minute walk/run with them.

I'm still recovering from my 13-miler 10 days ago. The back of my right knee is still bugging me - not sure still if it's a knee thing, bottom of hamstring, top of calf, nerve thing, or what. Stretching and foam rolling seem to help but not cure. My online research has been inconclusive. Was supposed to do 4 miles on Sunday but only did that including warm up and cool down (usually I don't count that time or distance). Leg started to bug me enough I didn't want to push farther. Managed 30 minutes today knowing it was there, but not in pain.

I'm also taking glucosamine religiously and using arnica cream (homeopathic) once a day or so. I'm thinking about getting it checked out to make sure I'm not making things worse or that it won't come back with a vengeance as we get closer to the marathon.

In other fitness news, I looked into the Yoga place near my house - I've been doing okay with the DIY at-home method, but think I might like to try to fit it into my schedule more regularly. They have a late "candlelight" class at 8:30pm, so I could possibly get to that even if I do DD's bedtime routine (DH and I usually take turns).
I hope the knee is doing better. Do you think the glucosamine helps? I am hoping someone has altras at the expo so I can try a pair on. Oh--and we have been known to nap on Ellen on occasion....it has become a running joke in our family.:thumbsup2

I had a local 10k race on Sunday. I had a great race although I did not quite get the time I was hoping for. But if I kept up that pace for a half it would take 14 minutes of my Tinker Bell time so I called it a success! :tink: I am definitely feeling the effects from running what was the last race for my shoes. I have my new pair and will be breaking them in on my LR this week-end. I've worn them a couple of days at work and on a couple of short runs already. I'll take my spare pair in case I get any blisters or anything.

Our lovely hostess is celebrating her son's birthday with him and his friends at WDW this week and asked me to post a QOTW.

What do you like to wear when you are running? Do you like to dress up for your races?

Have a great day!
Thanks for keeping an eye on things Lisa. I am so glad you had a good 10k and a good corral for W&D.

When I run around here I am usually in shorts or a running skirt and a tech shirt. I do have tights for when it's cold. I did wear a tutu for the last Princess race and loved it. I am planning some kind of Pirate theme for W&D and have a new skirt, but not sure what else I will wear. Mike and I are planning costumes for the marathon as well. :goodvibes

FWIW, it was pretty cool in the evenings last week at WDW. I will still stick with a skirt, but you all definitely want dry clothes for afterwards.

Well my 5 mile trail race into a 7 miler due to the trails not being as clearly marked as organizers stated. Congratulations to Jake! And how nice to help out the lady with the toddler.:goodvibes

Congrats on your 7 miler?! :upsidedow Sorry it wasn't 5 like you expected. Sounds like it was not well-organized for so many people to be lost!

Welcome Jessica! I will add you to the first page--probably tomorrow. My DS is in college at USC. We love visiting him in SC. I highly recommend getting fitted for shoes at some point. It's amazing what a difference it can make.

Rose glad that you had a great time at WDW. Sorry for the Gator problems -- those Carolina shirts were probably like a red flag to a bull . . . ;)

How is everyone doing?
Probably so, but it just was ridiculous how rude some people were. Our kids were so well behaved and polite like the lovely kids that they are, and people just kept trying to provoke them. And if I may add--we did all look pretty awesome dressed up for the game, even if it was an awful game!

****
I will have to post a picture or two for you all, but we were at WDW last week with our DS (21) and 5 of his college friends. We had a wonderful time--but got no sleep. I am almost feeling human again.:goodvibes It definitely was the trip of a lifetime and I think everyone had a really great time.

Mike and I are going to run 10-13 tomorrow--last long run before the w&d. A lot of it depends on the weather. It is miserable here--low 40s and nasty nasty rain. If we are on the treadmill it will be closer to 10. Then next weekend 6, then the W&D.

I hope everyone is doing well. I will be back sometime this weekend with a new question.:goodvibes

Thanks!! My nephew is also in school at USC! I'm in the Upstate of SC, which is a beautiful area, if I do say so myself!! :)

I had a rough run this Saturday - but I'm looking forward to my 5Ks this Saturday coming!!

The knee...meh. I almost completed my 15 miler last Tuesday. I really took the pace easy and did even more walking than I originally planned, but the knee or whatever it is just felt awful. I made it 12.75 miles and did 1 more mile the next morning. I did manage to teach dance and get in two 30-minute training run/walks later in the week - no problems. I have an appointment with a sports med doctor Thursday morning.

I don't know if the glucosamine helps - I've never taken it regularly before. I figure I'll try anything to get me through to the marathon.

It's been a year since I've been to the chiropractor and I'm thinking I might try that too! But my reasoning for that is more for neck/back/hip alignment.

What year is your nephew? My DS is a senior, but he is staying for grad school I think. Great attitude about the bad run. :)

I'm sorry about the knee. I think of you every time my itband starts talking to me, which seems to be a lot lately since it has gotten cold. I am trying to figure out if there is a correlation. I know my problems start in my lower back/hips and it has all been so ridiculously tight and seems to never get warmed up with the cold air outside. I am thinking about trying one of those portable heating thingies for muscle soreness on the next long run in the cold. I figure it can't hurt...or at least I can't think of how it could hurt. ;) I hope the dr. visit is helpful.:goodvibes

Nicole--Happy Belated Birthday! Hope that you had a fantastic day!

MB--I saw on another thread that you had a fall. I hope you are doing ok. I know after I lost my weight, that I really panicked when I could not exercise due to injuries. I don't know if you are struggling with missing workouts, but I wanted to tell you--it is not the beginning of the end. (Which is what I thought--I assumed I was going to gain every pound back.) Hopefully it is just a little set back. And if you don't need the encouragement--feel free to ignore me.:goodvibes

At a risk of repeating myself (can't remember if I posted this question before) here's a QOTW. I need this as much for myself as anything.

QOTW---brrrr, winter is just around the corner. It's cloudy and gray. The sun is barely making an appearance (at least where I live). Around here it is damp and rainy a lot. How are you handling your workouts/ training with fall in full force and winter just around the corner?

I will come back and answer later, but in case you didn't guess, I am not a big fan of winter. (Which is why I refuse to complain no matter how hot and humid it is in the summer). I try to make the best of it and be positive, but it is a huge struggle for me.

Nicole, happy belated birthday! :bday: party:

I freely admit that I am a fair weather runner. :sunny: So when it is too hot, too wet, too cold, too dark or too anything else I retreat to the indoor running track. Yes, I feel like I am running in circles but I tell myself I am working on my mental toughness. Plus it's handy to all facilities that might be needed. :goodvibes

I'm liking the 10 day forecast for WDW next week. ::yes::

I'm riding the taper roller coaster here. I'm ready to rock and roll at the Wine & Dine and see me some WISHers! :rockband:

Happy Friday!

To answer the Question of the week. I don't like winter. I don't even really like fall that much anymore. I try really hard to stay positive about it all, but it is hard. I wheeze if the air is too cold and I swear the cold temps aggravate my itbs....yep, wine, wine, wine. I need some cheese with that wine, oh I mean whine.:thumbsup2

Anyhow, how do I manage it. I try to have a race on the calendar so I have something to train for. I schedule out my workouts for the whole month and set an exercise goal. (Shameless plug, I am hosting the exercise challenge this month if anyone wants to join.)

During the week I mostly run on the treadmill, but I am making a huge effort to only do long runs outside. I just can't do anything over 10 miles on the treadmills without wanting to jump off a cliff....(ok, so I am a little dramatic today). So that means dressing warm. I am going to try those heating things you attach to your muscles for the next long run and see if that helps. If the air is cold I wear a face mask to keep the air going into my lungs warm and damp.

What I am really struggling with is carb cravings. I don't know if it is a seasonal thing, a marathon training thing, or something else. I need to get some kind of a handle on it. Right now I am up just a couple of pounds, which my trainer says you can't even see, but we all know how a couple becomes 10, becomes 15, becomes 20....And to be honest I am up over 10 from my lowest, but that was when I was sick and not a very realistic goal.

Anyhow, sorry for the run on thoughts today. I am struggling a little bit, but I know I can get a handle on it. I just need to stick with it.:goodvibes

Hope everyone's training is going well. We will run between 6 and 10 this weekend, depending on how we feel. Then next weekend is the W&D race!!!

Rose&Mike - My nephew is a junior! He's a journalism major.

Also, so right about the shoes. Shin splints mean it's time for some real $$$ running shoes!!!!

2 5ks tomorrow!! Hope everyone else has a great weekend run!!

Rose,
my ITBS seems better when the weather is colder- course my idea of cold is under 60- living in Fl. Ran 2 speed works monday and wednesday of 3.1 miles each and did 7 yesterday- I will do an easy 4 tomorrow and 3or 4 on wednesday- planning to head over to Orlando mid morning Saturday.

Lisa -looking forward to meeting you- :yay:
Rose looking forfard to seeig you again.:cheer2:

Wishing everyone a great week as we head towards W/D!:cool1:

Hi!

I Just wanted to wish everyone good luck and good times at wine and dine! Can't wait to read all about it when we get back from vacation :)

Xo
Melinda

2 5ks tomorrow!! Hope everyone else has a great weekend run!!

How were the races? :goodvibes

Melinda--thanks for the good thoughts!

Dottie--can't wait to see you too! I am so glad your running is going so well.

I used my slight pre race jitters to my advantage and we did some serious cleaning around our house yesterday. We even stripped wallpaper in our downstairs powder room.

I think it is going to be a great race, but I hope the temps don't cool off too much more in FL. And I hope whatever storm they are talking about for later this week doesn't impact anyone's travel plans.

Mike and I ran 6 miles Saturday in the cold rain. And it stunk. It was freezing. When we started there was a break in the showers, but started about a mile into it and just rained on and off the next 5 miles. I kept going by telling myself that the weather for the marathon could be like this. I asked myself if there was something I would rather be doing--and decided yes, I would rather be taking a hot shower, :rotfl: but I kept going. I couldn't even play the ipod it was so wet, so I sang (very poorly) some Kanye and Kelly Clarkson--what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.:thumbsup2

Have a good Monday!

Kind of nice but also sad that you think of me when your ITBand is acting up! :upsidedow My low back, hip, and knee are all a little off on that side, so it's hard to fix them all! My appointment went well. They did an x-ray and I went for an MRI that evening. I have two small tears in the miniscus, but probably not new. Just aggravated from my longer distances. The options are injection, do nothing, physical therapy, or "scope" (tiny surgery). I will have a follow up appointment next week to discuss options and figure out the plan. But I'm cleared for the Wine & Dine. Both my doctor and her assistant are runners.

Nicole--Happy Belated Birthday! Hope that you had a fantastic day!

Thanks for the birthday wishes!
I joined a heat yoga studio last week and did my first treadmill workout in a long time! It was really difficult to transition to the treadmill - more so for the walking portions. I cannot walk anywhere near as fast or as comfortably on a treadmill as I can outside. But even at a 16-minute mile walking pace, I never felt great. Running felt okay. If it's above 40 and not raining/snowing/icy, I stay outside. Extreme heat is okay - I just take it slower or change what time. Knowing I need to stick to my race training plans is helping. I've also been meaning to try the aqua jogging class near me, but haven't gotten there yet. Maybe next week for some post-race, no-impact recovery!

Nicole, happy belated birthday! :bday: party:

The forecast is looking pretty good. I planned to wear capris and a really lightweight long sleeve top. But I went running in that outfit last night (temp here was 45) and I wasn't really cold (except nose and hands). Hmm... Might pack the shorts and a short sleeve top (but I'd have to go shopping for that!).

Happy Friday!

Hope everyone's training is going well. We will run between 6 and 10 this weekend, depending on how we feel. Then next weekend is the W&D race!!!
I'm having carb cravings also - and the scale is showing it. I was rocking the maintenance thing until 2 weeks ago, but now I can't shake the extra 4 pounds.

Sorry about that awful weather run! I'm glad you at least tried to think of if you'd rather be doing anything else. I probably would have sung to myself, too. :thumbsup2

I did 4 miles at my goal pace for Wine & Dine (13mm), and an extra 0.7 at a decent-for-me pace. Over 5 miles if I include my warm up and cool down, which I was feeling pretty good about until I realized I was supposed to do 6. :headache: Oh well! :lmao: It was a great training run though! Some tunes that came on my playlist really helped me and I occasionally grooved down the street. I need to find my iPod Shuffle and work on my race mix! If this afternoon is slow at work, I may be doing some playlist research! It was a personal moment of pride and a test of my will at last years W&D to go without iPod. Considering I was a bit injured and not even close to the pace I trained for, this made for a mediocre-at-best race experience. I wasn't running with DH or a friend, so it was a slog. It was okay and I felt extra proud of myself for completing a difficult race, but I don't need to repeat that. I'll have one ear bud in and turn it on when I need some tunes.

My races this weekend were great!! I'm a newbie runner, and still slow, so I was slow, but I had lots of fun, and I'm just going to keep training to get faster!! The Zombie Run had obstacles and zombies - even though it was a 5k, I ended up running 3.5 miles with all of the dodging I had to do!! (There was a HUGE field filled with the "zombies", and myself and the friend I ran with took the long way to try to avoid more zombies, which contributed greatly to my extra mileage...) My time on that one was pretty bad - 53 minutes - mostly b/c I took a 60 second penalty to get another "life flag" and I walked on a part of the course that had loose gravel - all I could think was that I was going to get seriously injured on that gravel!!! I did finish with 1 life flag, so I wasn't eaten by zombies!!!!!!

The other race was done with a bunch of my co-workers in memory of one of our bosses who passed away from lung cancer last year. The tone there was a lot more somber, but appropriately so.

It was an exhausting day, but fun (and very active!).

Good luck to everyone in the Wine & Dine this weekend!!
