Surprised the kids, wife, and my readers w/ a 2 week trip to AoA!(*NEW* 11-7)

Dude, I wish !! I am recovering from ankle surgery and have a cast on my leg. We don't go back until January and we are staying at Boardwalk.

my bad, it was bottzz above you that had that in there signature i edited it to correct it.

have you stayed there before? it seems that even though it is very nice to walk around the lake it doesn't get that crowded like some of the other deluxe resorts.

like contemporary always seems busy and load in the main floor lobby area.

and Polynesian is nuts there every night.

seems like you could still really enjoy the boardwalk area of your resort in the evening.

Yay, you're there! I checked out the AoA resort during our trip. I wasn't sure if I was going to like it but the theming is spectacular. I don't know if I could deal with one of those rooms for a week though. Eye-popping LOL. Can't wait to hear what you thought of it.

Subbing! I read your last report but don't think I ever commented.

Your children are adorable.

How nice that you could keep the secret that long!! Would never happen in my family.

Can't wait to see all your AoA pictures.

We finally enter the resort after visiting with the CM outside and enter a grand lobby...not the shear mass or size of the Wilderness lodge or AKL mind you, but still very impressive.

as you can see the drawings on the right wall start out as sketches, and as you get toward the gift shop and out of the lobby they have turned into full color drawings.
DSC03821_zpsda1870ee.jpg

i have a few panoramic shoots later in the report to share

dawn had done online check in for us the week prior so we hopped in that line,
DSC03822_zpsc844fbee.jpg

i showed the CM my ID, and she quickly found my pamphlet of materials...and proceded to get out the resort map and draw where our room was...i duplicated the material for you below. our entire check in process was less than 3 minutes.

she told us to just keep swimming past the nemo pool and then to migrate past the lion king, and we forget what she said for once we get to the little mermaid, but it had something to do with the movie.

i traced our route in black to our room.

now i asked her if she had anything that was facing the courtyard instead of the back of the resort and she check for me, and said there was nothing for our days that would work.

we actually were okay with that, as not sure how much noise the courtyard would echo and make in the evening when people were coming back to there rooms...we really enjoyed our room location and had no noise issues the entire trip.

and since i read alot of people complaining about the time it takes to get to the main building/buses etc, i timed our walk...depending on the day it took between 8 and 10 minutes to walk up with the whole family kids in tow

later in the week i timed the night walk by myself to go up and get drinks..5-6 minutes.

is it a distance yes, is it closer than say the farthest out room at CBR resort from there main food and drink station, seemed to be...it felt like the walk we had from our room on the other side of the lake to Coronado main building when we stayed there.

here is that map.

resortwalk_zpsabcc78c2.jpg

so i would say if you are worried about the walk to the rooms don't be, you walk a lot farther during the day around the parks, so don't let a walk back to your room detour you from staying here.

we were ready for some exploring and fun to begin.
DSC03823_zps6f5a1b3e.jpg

we found our way past the gift shop to the doors leading to the pool
DSC03824_zpseb9980a3.jpg

we all just stopped and took it all in, its something to see for the first time and pictures dont do it justice at all the detail that is around you. the kids didnt even move when they saw it.

DSC03825_zpsc2a52355.jpg

DSC03826_zpsad502fb5.jpg

but with it being a while since we had lunch and getting later, we were all hungry and eager to just keep swimming and begin our migration through the lion king to our room. you can see the large rocks that hide the stairwells in the lion king section.

DSC03827_zpse9d18cc7.jpg

still holding on tight to his puzzle he got a little earlier.
DSC03828_zps75374729.jpg

we have a video of our entire walk to the room that candi took on the video camera and i was in charge of pictures...well you can see i got rafiki on this side, but never got mufasa on the pride rock on the other...ohh well, and all the times i walked past him during the trip i thought i already had it so never took it.
DSC03829_zps65c2cbab.jpg

you can just image what it looks like.
(ran over of the picture limit so insert smiley here)

on the resort map that i posted, there is a red circle on the other side of this rock that is where they did the movies each night for the resort.

you could walk under this large tree or go the other path to the left they meet back up at the elephant graveyard, which i never took a picture of because i thought i took it he first day(once again over limit so insert head smacking smilie here)

DSC03830_zpsfec3e405.jpg

ill also through in the picture here that shows the path from our room to the busses that we took each morning, it cut down on the having to walk farther through the main building to get to the bus stop...timed it and was right about 8 minutes each morning.
resortwalkmorning_zpsa9161de5.jpg

we successfully migrate through the lion king section and are in front of the little mermaid section...on the right they were working on tearing out the sod and putting new sod down..we saw them do this to a few sections during the trip, and the areas that they tore out looked perfectly fine so not sure what was wrong with it.

anyway, here is the entrance before us.
DSC03831_zps0a7c2c13.jpg

and the stairwells that are hidden by some nice underwater plants.
DSC03832_zps88ad778a.jpg

we then have some dinglehoppers-which i didnt get a picture of, but may have later in the week, and some other lovely treasures that ariel has gathered over her adventures.

DSC03835_zps5f8afee6.jpg

you can tell the landscaping is growing in and was freshly planted, but once they get a little bigger it will look really nice, there are many areas where they have a crushed seashell/sand mixture as the base and that is pretty cool looking.

at the end of the main walkway we have the prince eric statue that went overboard during the storm.
DSC03836_zps0248dbc4.jpg

on the left we have king triton
DSC03837_zpsf16f12c2.jpg

and the right was ursula, which i have a few partial pics later in the report of but dont think i have a full body one of here..(scratch that i see her in the background of two of the pictures above.
i know you are thinking seriously dude, major TR party foul.:(

we move on to the pool in the middle of the courtyard.

DSC03838_zps8340063d.jpg

follow the swimming fish along the path toward our section.
DSC03839_zpsf0d50b20.jpg

we hang a left around the laundry/bathroom facility by the pool
DSC03840_zpsa4b7e88a.jpg

so serious and taking it all in, but what does he see just ahead of us.
DSC03841_zps4dcca3ec.jpg

why the little mermaid and flounder of course...we got to walk past her every day many times back and forth to get to our room.
DSC03842_zps23112979.jpg

stay tuned working on the actual "room" pictures right now...

and once again sorry for the lack of a few pictures of some of the details, there is so much to take pictures of that sometimes you forget a few or in my case many items to photograph.

room pictures coming up in part 2.

Chapter 5. Just keep swimming part 2

we round the corner and find our room good ol trusty room number 8517, freshly prepared for us and just about a week old. lets enter shall we.
DSC03843_zpsf5f46012.jpg

gone are the traditional insert swipey card thingy into slot and door unlocks, we are in the age of the tap the card against the black fob behind parkers hand and enter the room.

i tested it to see if you could just put your wallet up to it, didn't open...tried to just open wallet and open door nope, only worked if the card was out and touching the black fob to get in.

what do we have when we enter. your typical sized value room, but with much more flair, and detail, in my opinion anyway.
DSC03844_zps1b107bc7.jpg

we have our double beds, with you could tell brand new and somewhat stiff bedspreads...we didn't use them anyway, so it wasn't an issue.

the view towards the bathroom.
DSC03845_zpsa6bd99dd.jpg

our lovely mickey head on the starfish bedspread.
DSC03846_zps4972cf27.jpg

the little table by the door was plenty big enough for our use, we stored the typical gifts, cameras, toys, bags, etc on it and worked fine...also came equipped with your under the sea lyrics
DSC03847_zpsf63288cf.jpg

there was also a good sized mirror high detailed above the table.
DSC03848_zps2094eff0.jpg

on the tv stand/dresser we had another shell shaped towel, with a sticker for parker. the dresser has three drawers in it for storage as well as the other half opening up for a fridge...under the TV there is a convenient storage slot on the right with the left having a fold down door that you can plug in your devices for viewing on the tv such as gaming devices/cameras etc.
DSC03850_zps0cb773c2.jpg

between the two beds is a picture/wall hanging of sebastian and flounder giving each other a high clawfin
DSC03851_zps083ecb00.jpg

and we have a nice shell headboard above the bed with a light that can be turned on above the nightstand.
DSC03852_zpscc55da4e.jpg

prince eric had a painting on the wall, sadly my luggage was to small for this artwork to fit in it, (i measured) i also found out later in the week when a lady was coming out of her room that the picture on her wall faced the center of the room as well and her room was the opposite direction so they have two prints of this one for each way it needs to face.
DSC03853_zps70f70703.jpg

as we move into the bathroom there is a single sink, with a large corral mirror, your typical hanging space/iron/luggage holder/and safe you can see in the mirror/hair dryer on the wall/and what i thought was a nice touch a little cubby hole on the vanity to store extra stuff as well.
DSC03854_zps36457b45.jpg

we move to the right and enter the value sized bathroom that you must enter all the way into before closing the door but that isnt an issue for us. and see a lovely shower curtain or aerial waiting for us.

DSC03855_zps85633bbf.jpg

found out later in the trip that they sell the shower curtains that are in all 4 sections of the resort for about 100 bucks in the gift shop, might have been plus or minus 10 bucks i forget right now...the lady said they had to cut a deal with the manufacturer to sell them...she said they are so pricey because they are commercial grade you can wash them over and over and nothing happens to them...they are very thick and nice quality but didnt want to shell out the money for one this trip....but we will see about the future.

we pull back the curtain and we found aerials hidden treasures that when the curtain is closed it really does make you feel like you are in a cave in the water showering.
DSC03856_zps0f8b2c94.jpg

there is a ton of detail and you can get lost trying to search for hidden mickeys while taking your shower/bath...which a few members of the family did and actually found them...i will point them out later.

there is actually ONE more hidden mickey that Parker found later in the week, but will let it go for now and see if anyone else sees it....i will post it later on in the report.

i cant wait, the hidden mickeys were found later that night while candi was in the shower...i just have to show the picture now....no not of her in the shower, but of the hidden mickey.

can you see it.
DSC03886_zpsc3c27d9d.jpg

how about now....

DSC03887_zpse2b39abb.jpg

look to the left of where the bar goes into the wall, you can make out his ears.

back outside the bathroom we have the octopus coat hanger by the bathroom
DSC03857_zpse01ddb3d.jpg

and the curtain that you can close between the sink area and the main bedroom.
DSC03858_zps7b29c428.jpg

we dropped our stuff off and headed up to the main building to eat dinner...outside our room we see this toward the elevator bank.
DSC03859_zpscff079a2.jpg

and this is the view straight out toward the parking lot.
DSC03860_zps03581e68.jpg

we stop for a picture in front of the giant aerial and flounder before continuing on.
DSC03862_zps75eb54a8.jpg

and since i didnt take it on the way to our room, her is zazu on the rock that is closest to the little mermaid section..scar is on the other side of the rock...and in the background you can make out the elephant graveyard a little bit.
DSC03863_zps80302b5d.jpg

coming up next we explore more of the resort and see what they have to offer for dinner.

Man, you're flying along with the updates. Love the pictures of the resort! The big spaces with all of the animation drawings look really impressive. And the rooms look great, too! Love all the details.

Yay, you're there! I checked out the AoA resort during our trip. I wasn't sure if I was going to like it but the theming is spectacular. I don't know if I could deal with one of those rooms for a week though. Eye-popping LOL. Can't wait to hear what you thought of it.
hey jenny, get to moving on that TR missy...

the rooms are smaller than mods...but really they didnt seem to bother us, we have stayed in value before and it just seems like you miss out on the little extra room between the bed and the door...i just posted the room pics after you posted so enjoy checking them out.

Subbing! I read your last report but don't think I ever commented.

Your children are adorable.

How nice that you could keep the secret that long!! Would never happen in my family.

Can't wait to see all your AoA pictures.

:welcome: feel free to comment along the whole way this time, i enjoy the questions and comments.

thanks for the kind words

it was tough but glad i did it.

you dont have to wait long as you were subbing i was posting.:thumbsup2

yes much faster than my normal pace of 2 updates a week...but i know there are a good amount of people still going this fall that wanted to see pics before there trip, so i wanted to at least post some of the resort pics for them and let them ask any questions that they wanted.

it was very impressive all the work they put into it...i have alot more of the detail stuff later on in the report...glad you enjoyed it.

We stayed there last Thanksgiving. LOVED it !!! We really loved how close it was to Epcot and HS and the atmosphere at night was amazing. But our room was nice and quiet. We can't wait to stay there again !! The kids say it has the best pool.

We visited for supper 1 night and found the lobby and check in area to be WAY to bright, the menu at the foodcourt is awful and it tskes soooo long to get your food !!!

Dan great pix of the resort , it was dark when we visited , the pool looked awesome , but that walk would be out of the question with our special needs groups , we would have taken 15 - 20 mins to get to the bus !!:rotfl2:Did you check if Pop buses were closer , it looks like you were close to the bridge and that is a short walk to Classic hall!!!???

Great pics of the resort! I've seen many but I love seeing the ones people I know take. Makes it much more personal! :thumbsup2

The lobby alone at AoA just looks so cool. I can't wait to see it in person.

LOL, I love it. Without kids, 5 minutes. With kids, 8-10 minutes.

I really love the fact that the resort is just so colorful, and the colors are absolutely beautiful.

Thanks for all of the great shots of the resort. I'm especially a fan of the shower. :thumbsup2

Thanks for sharing pics of Art of Animation! What a cute resort - my grandson would love it! Your son looks so serious taking everything in - your kids are so adorable! The walk looks far on the map but then if it only takes 8-10 mins, that's nothing compared to how much you walk in the parks.

AoA is seriously such an amazing resort, we were so impressed with it while we were there!

I agree that it is a bit of a fair walk to the room, but cutting across the parking lot really saved us time in the mornings (we went the long way at night). Great pictures! I'm excited to read more!

Joing in! Really enjoying reading your TR so far! I love that you were able to surprise your kids (even though their reaction wasn't what was expected!) AND your wife! You have an adorable family and I can't wait to read more about your trip! AoA looks like a very fun place to stay!

That's a great story of the surprise! Can't believe you managed to carry all that luggage off the bus.

parker was jumping with joy at the monorail ride we were about to take.

so being the clever dad I am we went to the very front so the kids would have a good view of what was in front of them.

you would think this was my first time in disney, and i would not make this mistake again...the guy in the red is even a little foreshadowing of where we SHOULD be going.

but nope i said this way family the right is where we need to be. so down the elevator we go.

i get out and see car rental as far as i can see.:headache:

back up the elevator, and to the left side we go...but it gave us the opportunity to stop in front of the mickey store sign.

word of advice, go past security and hang a LEFT at the mickey store, this will take you ME and mickey.

a quick trip down the elevators on that side, and we are starting to see mickey heads...so naturally i tell parker, hey buddy those mickey heads on the floor will take us to the mickey bus.

Parker "i know dad"

i love how four year olds already know it all:laughing:

:headache::rotfl:

I feel your pain. At least it made a good story!

Looked at all your AoA pictures, and all I can say is: WOW! Just wow. I am blown away by all the detail in the lobby, the exteriors, and the room, right down to the shower stall. Keep up the good work with the storytelling and the photography!
