I got ChEARSquad for my daughter, she will be alone, and 16, and I like knowing she will be safe in one place while I run!

My DD17 will be alone too. I was debating on getting her the ChEARsquad but haven't done so yet. What level did you get and where are you staying? Maybe they can hang out while we run.

Just twisted my ankle running :-(. I have a bad ankle that has been ok for years, until today. I think I stepped on a branch or something. Won't be running for a bit now, bummer. I'm supposed to do a Tough Mudder (NJ) next Saturday, that's in jeopardy now. Sorry, just ranting a bit cause I'm bummed out. I'm doing the half in Jan, so I have plenty of time to recover and train, I guess that's the positive in this :-).

This is my first post in a few years.

I started running about six years ago with W.I.S.H. and have run off and on, and have completed about a dozen half marathons since then. My first race ever was the Disney World half marathon in 2007. I've never been really fast. And that's been fine with me. My half marathon PR is 2:18, although most of my Disney races were around 2:50.

I ran the San Jose Rock 'n' Roll half marathon on Sunday with run/walk intervals averaging 11:58/mi and finished in 2:35.

I'm planning on traveling solo to run the full in January. This will be my first full marathon. I'll be turning 40 later that month and running a marathon is on my turning 40 bucket list, and, well, the medal looks awesome. So here I am.

I'm still pretty intimidated about the full marathon distance and especially the idea of running five to six hours. :worried: I expect that I'll be able to improve my pace with some speed work and losing some weight through the training, but I really don't have a lot of time during the week to work out.

I've mostly been following the Galloway plan "to finish" posted on the runDisney web site. So far good, although up until now hasn't gone beyond the half marathon distance.

Anyway I just wanted to reintroduce myself and say that I'm looking to seeing everyone in January :-)

chris

I'm also going to be running my first marathon at Disney and at the age of 48. I'm doing the Galloway plan as well and so far so good on the training. I'm doing a half the first week of November and hoping to finish somewhere around the 2:30 mark so your time is certainly encouraging to me. Good luck on the rest of your training

There are a few different ones, and it depends on money, but there are headlamps that you can get. There are some that have both a front white light (to be able to see in front of you) with a back red light with rechargable batteries, those run about $60. Or if you want to go a cheaper route, I got one from Wal-Mart in the camping section that uses triple A batteries for $13 a last year (I run 5 days a week after October 1st and the batteries still haven't run out). Then you can just get a blinkling red light for your back.

Hope this helps!!

I've been debating one of those headlamps myself, and I hadn't thought about looking in the camping section at Wal-Mart. We run very early in the morning so it's dark for us as well. I already have one of those flashers for my back to help with visibility, but the headlamp would just add another protection and help visualize the road. Thanks.

Sorry about your ankle. I hope it heals up quickly for you.

My training is progressing well. We've got a 17-miler this weekend that has me pretty intimidated mentally. I've done 15 and it went pretty well, so not sure why this extra 2 has me so worried. Hopefully all will go well!

we are starting to get into the same situation about need some light. Has anyone used the running lights that goes on you knuckles?

We are staying at Art of Animation and I got her the Platinum level. I figure if he is gonna suffer all those hours, she may as well get all the perks lol

I am going solo this year. But last year I purchased the silver package for my husband he met me at the finish line in the parking lot which was easiest to find each other. I really appreciated all of the people cheering us on it does help. :cheer2: :cheer2:

I am staying at AoA as well. I haven't decided on Cheer for wife and 8 year old. They don't seem keen to getting up early enough for it to matter.

One word of caution on the headlamps: be sure to look up on a regular basis. The light from a headlamp generally only works well when your head is pointing towards the ground, and as any ultra runner will tell you, it gets mighty uncomfortable to have your neck angled downward for extended periods of time. A waist-mounted lamp will save your neck from getting stiff and sore while still providing plenty of light.

The one that I use that I got actually pivots up and down so that you can angle the light how you want it. So you just need to adjust it when you first run, it surprisingly stays put at whatever angle you set it at. Looks like the one I had went up in price (surprising) but here it is:

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Energizer-HD33AIEN-Energizer-Pro-3-LED-Headlight/8111443

I don't remember how many lumens it is, but it's enough to see where you are going and avoid potholes!

What do you use for running in the dark? I am starting to do some biking and got myself a headlamp for my bike, but am always looking for ways to improve my visability at night since it gets so dark so early up north here.

When I'm just running on the streets, I clip a small flashing LED light to my waist so I can be seen by cars and other traffic. My night vision is pretty good so I'm not too worried about seeing what's in front of me when there's so much ambient light around. When I'm running trails, though, I use am LED headlamp rotated to shine mostly ahead and a waist-mounted one to light the ground about 2' to 5' in front of me. I learned my lesson the hard way that looking down with a light really hurts during a 50-mile race.

I cannot say with any more sincerity that every runner should have some source to help drivers see them in the dark. I think the jury is out on flashing lights but as I drive, I see them well. The issue is that if you are an evening runner nearing the holidays, drunks (non PC for impaired drivers) tend to be drawn to a flashing light. Seemingly, they think it is a vehicle in front and attempt to follow.

I personally wear either a running vest or a reflective belt if traveling and well as my Road ID. I do have a flashing clip on light that I use on occasion but not as often as I thought I would. If trail/bike path running, I will carry a light flash light for really dark sections. I rarely run those anymore.

My sincerity comes from a hit and run; vehicle vs runner with me being the runner. It was January 2009 in Marco Island, a resort area. It happened so quick that I really have a hard time putting it all together. I normally run street (facing traffic) but for some reason that morning I ran sidewalk. I came up to a light controlled intersection and crossed with the light. However, a silver convertible early 2000's Mustang with black roof and just after a broken left mirror came up from the same direction I was running and turned left against a red arrow. I heard the car, saw the headlights, danced and smacked into the front fender, and rolled up the windshield and over the mirror as I fell to the ground.

I am not sure that a reflective belt or anything would have helped that hit. Where it did help was the non-hit that almost occurred. I was on my back and saw more lights then a screech of the tires. A very panicked lady bounded out of her car saying she saw a flash in her headlight and did not recognize what it was from. It was literally my reflective strap on my ROAD ID flashing in her headlights. Without that flash (or today if she were texting) I would have been involved in a second hit.

As soon as I evaluated and then stood, I saw the Mustang boogie off. I was 1000% lucky. If I were a half step further I would have impacted the front of the car and may not be here to tell a the story. I relay this specifically due to the fact that most all of us will run in the dark between now and January. I am not here to scare just pass a word of wisdom. To be transparent, I am also compensated by RoadID due to telling my story publicly through them. I am a free ID for life member; a club quite frankly one does not want to be a member of.

Finally, the sobering part of this story follows. I left my hotel room and got all the way out to the lobby when I realized I did not have the Road ID on my wrist. My Garmin had just found satellites so I was just about to shove off. Then I recalled my conversation with Mary about running in strange places so I went up to the room for the ID. I am forever grateful that I did. (Yes, you can make a case for me being a half mile further down the road if I said what the heck, but I think it was destiny).

Be safe out there. The first half hour after sunset is the most dangerous as drivers are still acclimating to the dark.

I have them and I love them! I don't think they give off as much light as a headlamp, but they help me see any cracks in the road, and drivers definately see them.

Can someone please provide me with a list of the host hotels for the Marathon weekend?

I have searched and searched and can't seem to find a complete list.

All WDW hotels!

Re: the Running in the dark post... WOW I am glad you lived to tell the story, but what a scary experience. Thanks for that post.

Stay safe everyone. There are a lot of reasons running in the dark can be dangerous...

Hey Chris. I turn 40 two weeks prior and 'shocker' it's also on my bucket list. It will be my first full and have only run two halfs. I figure I'll be at least six hours maybe a lil more for the full. We can do this. It's one and done for me.

Bucket list... Guilty here as well.

Yet mine is more involved. Mine is not just to run a marathon, but specifically Boston. Not just run it, but qualify and do it the real way. Charity spots don't count. So Disney full is just one step of a larger goal.

I did allow for one exception. Kona.

Both most likely will never happen. Yet, January will. It's all about having a goal and something to look forward to.

Bucket Lister here as well! I wanted to run a marathon before I turned 40, and I turn 40 in April, so I will just be squeaking by, lol
