7 flights, 6 hotels, 1 cruise ship and a major stuff up...brace yourself UPDATE!

Glad you got a flight home Bec. Enjoy the time....and the vodka lemonade. Sounds like lots of sugar will be needed. Lots of sugar.

Well you must have made some form of correct turn in Albuquerque, to end up in Palm Springs after all this :lmao:

Sorry, I've had too much sugar this morning. I've always wanted to go to Palm Springs and Albuquerque, just like Bugs Bunny always talked about...

I can't believe all of this has happened. I'm still confused about what went down but I'm so glad you've managed some "vodka spiked lemonade" :lmao:. Palm Springs sounds lovely. Enjoy this extra little gift of time you've been given. Safe travels.

I'd like to know this also.

The way this happened :scared1: I can laugh about it now

We booked flights with Delta MEL-MCO-LAX-MEL
A price drop of $700 per fare entitled us to a Delta credit which they offered us in certificate form only.
With $700 in useless Delta credit we rang and asked them to add in flights MCO-LGA then JFK-LAX, asking them a the time about the MCO-LAX flight that we now would not get as we were taking a different route the person on the phone said something along the lines of just don't get it.
So we got on our separate flights, no correspondence about the tickets being cancelled, nada nothing.
Then trying to self checkin last night, with no help from the extremely unhelpful staff at Delta, one lady trying to find my itinerary then literally saying "I can't find it" and walking away leaving me standing there.
The young girl at the special services counter was lovely and was the only person who tried to do anything, then saying that the people at the central bookings wild not help me because "of what happened with my ticket previously"
What did happen with my ticket previously? I bought one, paid for the seat, they oversold the flight and gave my seat away. The oversell this flight every single night apparently.
I guess it's easy for them to take 2 people's money and only have one sitting on the plane, it's in their best interest to do so.
I also don't understand why we were told just to not turn up and not that there were consequences for the whole itinerary if we weren't there for one leg when we were booking flights to change the itinerary.

Expensive lesson learnt, Delta suck.
DH was speaking to the rep this morning and she could see the new bookings for the other flights and herself seemed shocked that the rep hadn't told us.

Travel insurance was extended by a week :thumbsup2 thanks for reminding me, our luck would be that one of us would break a leg if I had forgotten to renew it.

We found a place last night, La Hacienda LAX, cheap and cheerful LOL I didn't sleep much, but the others zonked.

I will be contacting Delta when I get home, I doubt stupidity is covered by travel insurance :furious: but it will be scathing, not only about the initial ticket problems but the way it was handled (or not handled)

If you're looking for my I'm in Palm Springs, sitting by the pool

Expensive, but at the end of the day is been an awesome trip, we are lucky in so many ways.
My friends Dad passed less than a week after being diagnosed with Leukemia, I have had my eyes opened to the homeless issues, it hurts me to see people living like that, it shouldn't happen.
If this is the worst of it, I still think I'm lucky.

your a lot calmer than what i would have been....I cant believe they would do that.....:upsidedow

but as you say, we are lucky in so many ways and when you weigh it all up, as long as you get home safe and your mental health fairly intact...then a good trip had by all...:crowded:

travel brings the unexpected..always plan for the worse and then enjoy when things turn out ....:wave2:

enjoy the pool time....I miss my pool time..I'm getting vitamin D withdrawls:beach:

You poor things what an end to what sounds like an awesome trip! So glad you have now got a trip home sorted. Enjoy your bonus weekend in palm springs :) and hopefully you can sort out all the extra expense once you get home.

Bec - Enjoy your pool time. Seems like you've gotten over the worst of it and can now focus on homeward bound. Sorry you had to go through this and I hope you get resolution with Delta when you get home.

My condolences for the loss of your friend's Dad. That's a very short period of time from diagnosis to the passing and I hope it was peaceful and painfree.

And yes, we have always considered ourselves lucky to be living in The Lucky Country. There is homelessness in Oz...but it isn't at the level of what we see elsewhere.

Keep well and hope you have a safe and uneventful flight home.

Bec thanks so much for the detailed explanation. It makes much more sense now and I am so sorry that you were given such bad information about skipping that flight. Grrrrrr.

I doubt whether you will get much joy from Delta. We've flown with them several times and overall have been happy however on our first international flight my husband In flight screen didn't work. It's not a big deal I guess but it was so annoying for such a long flight. They were absolutely useless at handling the situation on the flight and of course the flight was so booked there were no other seat options.

I wrote them a scathing letter on our return and we received a $50 voucher for the next time we flew with them. It didn't seem sufficient for how inconvenient not having the tv was.

I can't imagine how they would even begin to compensate you for your experience. I will keep my fingers crossed for you.

And I'm so impressed with how you are "counting your blessings" rather than letting the experience get you down. I think we can all learn something from the grace with which you've handled yourself.

I'm glad it's sorted :thumbsup2 The person on the phone was an idiot for telling you just not to turn up for a flight. It always amazes me how badly these people are trained!! :rolleyes2

Sorry about your friend's dad - I was worried about asking how he was going. Hopefully she'll be ok, but I can't imagine what sort of a shock it must have been! :sad1:

Ms. Shuttergirl - I would not have been able to cope without a TV on a flight. It would have sent me literally mad! :rotfl: Half way through the flight I think I would have started to demand they let me sit in the cockpit so I could at least watch something!! :lmao:

Hahahaha, I ended up swapping with DH for half the time and read and slept so he could watch my tv. It's amazing how long a flight seems without the entertainment system.

I can't believe this has happened to you! How shocking, this sort of stuff makes me very anxious when travelling. Are your flights home free? I am flying Delta for all of my internal USA flights, lets hope that I don't have issues as well. Luckily we have Hawaiian airlines for the international legs of the journey.

I have to say that I find it remarkable that through all of this you can still look hold such an optimistic outlook on everything! Hope you guys find some enjoyment in your remaining time and are fully compensated for all of this crazy, crazy customer service you have recieved with Delta!

So what did it cost you? I know I was brought up to never discuss money, but it's for information purposes!
I am also wondering what would have happened if you had genuinely missed that flight!

Becpee you are amazing i think i would of stood there until they got me on a flight crying not really but i would of wanted to, what poor customer service Delta seem to have had in dealing with this, you would think that the person who handled your booking would of put a note on your booking when they rebooked your other flight.
hug: its very sad about your friends Dad and a reminder about just how short our time here is.
It is extremely sad to see so many people living homeless in the USA and how many empty houses there are they could be housed in you would think by now there would be some sort of worldwide solution.:confused3
Enjoy your last few days i hope both your workplaces were good about what happened glad you extended the travel insurance:)

Wow, I really can't understand their stance on this one!

They have you on the phone, make changes to your flights, know that you can't be in two places at once and there are some serious consequences to that, but happily take your money anyway without telling you about those consequences? Advising you to miss the flight you don't need (and that does make sense - unless you've been cloned lol!) What were you supposed to do, turn up for both flights? Physically impossible! They should have at the very least warned you of the consequences, and told you what you needed to do to legitimately remove yourself from the unwanted leg, or they should not have taken your money and booked another flight when it was not possible for you to catch both.

Secondly, they take your money for the fight you miss, then they sell that seat a second time: $$$ score for them.
They take your money for your further flights, then cancel those tickets, assumedly selling those a second time too: more $$$ score for them.
You pay for a third lot of flights because you need to get home.
That's a lot of your money they have pocketed for nothing in return! How do they justify that as ok/reasonable?

And with no explanation on how you could have avoided it happening, or advice that making that addendum booking was a bad idea. Way to go Delta!

So what did it cost you? I know I was brought up to never discuss money, but it's for information purposes!
I am also wondering what would have happened if you had genuinely missed that flight!

On Tuesday when we were at the airport we were told $1000 each to get home, and even then the flight woud not be until next Monday as they overbook this particular flight every day
I went to other airlines to see if they could get us back earlier/cheaper but it seems they're all the same :scared:
So DH rang rebooking yesterday morning and spoke to a lovely girl who took into consideration the whole story, having all the booking numbers leaves a paper trail for them to look at, and they will be looking at it when I get home and speak to somebody higher up ;)
So yes, the girl yesterday got a figure of $850 each for Monday night, we could have got $550 if we waited until the following Thursday but we really do need to go home sometime DH and I still had some Delta credit, about $300 each so it got reduced that way.
So we're about $1800 out + extra accom + hiring the car
The accom here though is amazing Hotwire $139 per night Hyatt Grand Champions Indian Wells, there is a resort fee too but I find most resort hotels will charge one of those now. I thought we might as well make the mst of it :p

It's only money :upsidedow

Glad to hear your accommodation is nice, good price! :thumbsup2 So what are you going to get up to in palm springs?

I'm going to choose which pools I want to swim in, there are 4 big ones and 3 small.
DH booked himself a round of golf for tomorrow, and I'd love to check out Joshua Tree national park.
Palm Springs is about 2.5 hours from
LAX, and strangely it's cool most of the way here, then you get to a certain point on the freeway and the temperature goes through the roof.
I'm also going to head to Macy's and check out their Christmas stuff.
The resort is hosting a Ferrari and prestigious car conference, Aston Martin's and Maserati's as far as the eye can see :p
We needed this to wind down ;) I had the best sleep last night that I've had on the whole trip:upsidedow go figure

hey, ask at macys for the international discount of 10% when you buy stuff....we saved $$$$$$ and also go straight to the 50-70% racks...this years stuff at 1982 prices:cheer2:

glad things are working out, have a cocktail by the pool for all of us:grouphug:

Becpee, just caught up. What a horrendous thing to go through! Its a shame that it had to happen as otherwise it seemed you had a wonderful trip. Your outlook toward the whole episode is phenomenal. I'm not sure how I would have handled it! It is very poor of Delta.

I'm happy to hear that you are able to come home. Try and enjoy the last few extra days of your time in the US.

If this thing hadn't costed us south extra it would have been nothing but a blessing ;)
Seriously, if you're coming over here and doing the crazy run around to Disney, the outlets and you need a wind down, this is your place.
No city smog, great scenery, resort type of place, big room...this place is great.

When we get home, we'll start again for the next trip.
There isn't one hotel we wouldn't stay at again.
