All the Makings of a Disaster, The Wrap up 11/20

Yeah, I think those memories began yesterday, some I’d prefer to forget, but I’ll go with it;).

I’ve got a lot to report today, it was a busy day. It was much better than Day 1, but not totally without incident.

I woke up at 4am thinking about how Nanny and Pop are so dependant this trip and don’t seem capable of dealing with any of this on their own anymore. I can’t just let them loose in the magic kingdom with the fastpass plus cards and expect them to have success.

I decide to go on the ipad and change all of our fastpass plus stuff to be the same and I will stay with them until noon. I get back to sleep and wake up at 7am. I have my skoolbread and coffee made in my room. I got a chocolate milk to keep in the fridge to use as a creamer, this works quite well to camouflage the taste.

Pop is feeling better, he went to the giftshop the previous night to get some immodium (and apparently got lost again on his way back), but he’s up for the challenge today:thumbsup2.

A quick word about our fastpass plus cards. Since there are 4 people registered in my room, I had 4 cards and Nanny and Pop each had one, so I spread them out and we each ended up having 2 cards, so 8 choices each. This was like a dream come true. I planned all our rides to be in order so we could just make a loop around instead of a bunch of running back and forth. This was so convenient. Eight choices was a bit much as we didn’t use them all, but 4 would be perfect. We ended up not getting a single regular fastpass since it just wasn’t needed. Overall, I really liked this a lot. It was very convenient to just go on the computer and change our times. You just swipe your card at each location, and enter the line. Extremely convenient.

Here is what they looked like
IMG_0037.jpg

We left our rooms at 8 and got to the Magic kingdom with plenty of time. I showed them the boat dock to the Grand Floridian where we will meet at 4:45 to head over for our dinner at Narcoossees. We watched the opening show, took some photos
IMG_0083.jpg

Look at Nanny's toes, she had Mickey and Minnie painted on. They are a little anime looking, but still cute.
IMG_0084.jpg

We head in, have some photopass photos done, and go see Mickey and Minnie with our fastpass plus cards (I’ll just put FP+ when we use these). As we were leaving Pop says with a big smile “that was really cute, you know all the best stuff to do”. Here's an adorable pic of them with Mickey and Minnie
IMG_2049.jpg

Oh, and here's me
IMG_2047.jpg

Then we went to the firehouse to get the Sorcerers cards. As we were leaving Pop was so excited but was wondering why I only got one key, shouldn’t we each have one? Nope, I don’t think I can handle all three of us doing this:scared:. Pop, you can have the key.

We head out and get right on the train and take it to frontierland. We get off and ride Pirates, Jungle cruise (FP+), get a Dole Whip (rootbeer float for me please)
IMG_0087.jpg

The sorcerers cards have Pop going to a place by the Diamond horseshoe, so I leave them there at the portal while I go 30 feet away to the bathroom. When I came out, Pop was complaining that it didn’t work, nothing happened. I’m guessing he did something wrong, can’t leave them alone for a minute:p Then Pop and I ride splash mtn (FP+) Nanny is afraid of heights so she never rides this. Then we went to Haunted Mansion (FP+).

When we entered the Stretching room, the CM kept telling everyone to move all the way in. I guess since we were just outside Pop’s eyes hadn’t adjusted and he walked full force into the wall. He was fine and laughed about it, so I didn’t feel bad laughing too:confused3.

We went to small world, then Peter Pan (FP+). They had FP+ for Buzz lightyear and I was planning to head out to Art of Animation. It was about 12:15 now, so I walked with them to the hub and pointed them in the right direction. Nanny was nervous because their cards said Chuck and Brian, and she wasn’t either of them. So I guess there was an issue when they entered about who had what cards and they had an argument while the CM just shooed them in:lmao:. They went back to the room for a rest when they were done.

Next up: Art of Animation and a peaceful afternoon:lovestruc

I took a bus to Art of Animation to have a looksee and some lunch. This resort is so cute.

Here’s a few of the many photos I took.

I especially can appreciate how they attached the laundry room to the pool bar so you can have yourself a frosty beverage while waiting for the clothes to dry:rolleyes1. Not that I do laundry on vacation, but I’d be tempted to just so I could sit at the bar and wait for my clothes.

Their foodcourt is really nice, but as I’ve read previously, the wait is ridiculous. It wasn’t even crowded and I waited 15 min for my food. It was difficult to see where you should stand while waiting for your food as well. So people were just everywhere by the grill, not sure where to order from or pick their food up from, since it was like a mosh pit.

For lunch I had the Surf and Surf burger with fries, which was absolutely spectacular. It was a crabcake with about 5 fried shrimp on top along with a delicious sauce. It was messy to eat, but it was soooo good. I would go back just for this, it was that good.
IMG_0089.jpg

IMG_0090.jpg

And keeping true to my cupcake fantasy, I had the 4 mini cupcakes. They were your basic vanilla, chocolate, red velvet, and carrot. They were all pretty decent. I’m not a huge carrotcake fan, but this was ok. The red velvet was my favorite. They were all nice and moist.
IMG_0088.jpg

After lunch, I went back to the bus stop to head back into the magic kingdom. I had a FP+ for the princesses in Town square that I wasn’t sure I’d use, but I got back by 2:30, headed in to see them, barely waited at all and had some great photoshoots with them all (photopass). When I came out, people were lining up for the 3 o’clock parade, so I had a seat on a curb. I have never seen this before, it was so cute.

IMG_2093.jpg

Afterwards, I decided that I would go see the hall of presidents since it was on my list of things I’d never done. I almost fell asleep, but was afraid I wouldn’t wake up when it was over and that’d be embarrassing. I checked out the dream along with Mickey show
IMG_2106.jpg

Then I wandered the shops on Main Street on my way out to the boat launch for the Grand Floridian. Nanny and Pop showed up on time and we headed on over to the Grand Floridian for our 5:30 res. Nanny said she never saw the inside of the main building, so we wandered over there for a bit since we were early for our res. It’s so pleasant in there with the piano playing, but the air conditioning was up so high it was freezing, so we didn’t stick around long.

Next up: Narcoossees, and the one sour note for the day.

Your pics of AoA are great! The more I see of this place, the more I like it. I don't like the way the food court sounds, though. 15 minutes to get your food? :crazy2: That's a bit of a wait. Looks good, though!

Glad to see Pop was feeling better on Day 2. I'm sure he's not the first one to walk full-bore into the wall in the Stretching Room! Nanny's pedi is cute. :teeth:

I did notice in your final pic that Minnie looks like Zombie Minnie - where are her eyes? :scared1: :faint:

Their foodcourt is really nice, but as I’ve read previously, the wait is ridiculous.

I've heard it's really loud. Yes? No? I thought the Surf and Surf sounded interesting, but I'd rather get something at Pop if the AoA eating area if really noisy. We have to have the tie dye cheesecake at Pop, so I figured we'd wander over to AoA when we do that. :)

I checked out the dream along with Mickey show

What is wrong with Minnie's eyes? :scared: I'm guessing that they're closed, but there are lashes up above and it just looks very wrong. :p

Looks good, though! It really was adorable. I hope to stay here with DS14 if we can get in a trip next year by ourselves. I'm hoping they will do something about the foodcourt situation, since it's new and everyone seems to have the same comments, maybe they will make some changes there

I love that tie dye cheesecake at Pop, DS and I had that for breakfast many mornings during our stay there, though now I'd be hard pressed to decide between that and the new King cupcake I've been reading about (the Elvis one with peanut butter, banana, and bacon:lovestruc

Her eye's were just closed during that shot. Here's another one with them open so you don't leave with that creepy image of her!

I'm here and subbed! :hyper: I do not know how I missed the post directing us over here on the PTR, but I did! :confused3

I looked at the little girl and said, “Oh, are you going to ride with me, I’m by myself too”. She gave me a totally creeped out look and squeezed her way back to her mother
I am not even kidding when I tell you that I laughed out loud at this! :lmao:

I have to admit that, as I read along, I'm constantly flip-flopping between wanting to hug Nanny and Pop, and totally making this face --> :scared: .

I cannot wait to read more!!! :goodvibes

Hoppin' on board!! We check in to POR on 10/22 - looking forward to hearing the rest of your report!

Glad you found your way over here:cool1:

Haha, that little girl was so cute, she had her back to her mother pretending not to hear her, then she looked at me with eyes big as saucers before heading back there:rotfl:

Yeah, Nanny and Pop are just adorable, but I don't think they are meant for travel anymore:sad1:

Hoppin' on board!! We check in to POR on 10/22 - looking forward to hearing the rest of your report!

Welcome aboard:cool1: POR is really a beautiful resort. I think it was just the location along with the older people that made for a bad combination.

I have read lots of comments complaining about bus service, but in all three trips we've not had any major issues. I don't think we waited more than 10 minutes for a bus the entire trip, though we did stand often, mostly by choice. And the food court is fantastic, lots of choices. I don't think you'll be disappointed in your stay:thumbsup2

Dinner at Narcoossees....

What can I say, it was wonderful, perfect, delicious.
Here’s some pics to prove it. We all had the surf and turf. mmmmmmm

IMG_0091.jpg

Pop had the sorbet
IMG_0092.jpg

and Nanny and I had the almond crusted cheesecake, OMG, that stuff is good.
IMG_0093.jpg

After dinner when the bill came, it was an ordeal telling the in-laws how to handle the gratuity on the dining plan. She just wanted to leave cash, but there are so many copies of things, Pop never knew (even up to the last day), what exactly he needed to do. It always led to a ten minute discussion.

After dinner, we hopped on the monorail to the magic kingdom so we could see the parade. We had the FP+ for this, so there was a designated area to view, so we didn’t need to line up til 7:40. We had a little time, so we went on Buzz lightyear. Nanny’s score was 3300. She kept saying there were too many red dots and she didn’t know which was hers:rotfl2:.

When I got off the ride, I had a message on my phone from the Football trainer at the high school saying DS14 couldn’t participate in the game that day due to a swollen pinky and he’d need to get it x-rayed before being allowed to play again and wanted me to call him:scared:. I called DH and he said the pinky was fine and let’s let it be for the week since he won’t be playing anyway. To be continued Day 3…

Next we went over to the FP+ area for the parade. This turned out to be the biggest fiasco. We had been having such a great day, and this really put a wet blanket on the ending.

The space that is roped off is directly in front of the castle (but on the inside of the circle). There is just some plain concrete there. Behind it is where the Walt and Mickey statue is, and there are some benches and open space there, but that wasn’t part of the reserved area. There were ropes there separating that area from the FP+ area. People without fastpasses were lined up in that area, thinking they had a good spot since no one was initially in the FP+ space, it looked like they had a clear shot of the parade. Well, the FP+ space filled in, about 5 deep or more, and they could no longer see:confused3.

There were some really obnoxious people over there who were extremely upset and kept screaming “SIT DOWN, SIT DOWN, SIT DOWN” for the 20 minutes prior to the parade, and the first 10 minutes or so of the parade. Some people did sit down, but many did not. It was just flat concrete, no curb space, and I wasn’t about to have my 73 yr old in-laws sit down and not be able to get back up:scared:.

Nanny was feeling bad and tried kneeling, but it was hurting her knees too much. Pop was getting really bent out of shape and I don’t think he even paid attention to the parade. He started complaining about everything and anything at this point. There was one kid in particular who was screaming on top of his lungs for the entire 30 minutes. By the time it was over, Pop was sufficiently agitated and said he was going back to the room.

I don’t blame those people for being upset, they thought they had a good spot, and now they couldn’t see behind the hundreds of people who filled in the space. I think Disney needs to post signs where those ropes are letting people know that this area will be used for FP+ and will fill in. It was a test period, and I hope they realized that this part didn't work. Anyways, here are a few parade pics that came out decent:

Nanny and I stayed for the fireworks. We stayed right where we were and it was amazing. I hadn’t ever been up close before and it feels totally immersive. You do miss some of them because you can’t see the ones behind the castle too well, but it was definitely a cool experience. There were FP+ for the fireworks, but they were gone before I could get them.
Here's a couple pics from the fireworks.

Love the Mickey balloon in this pic.

IMG_2149.jpg

Surprisingly, when it was over, Nanny was hustling at breakneck speed through the crowd dragging me with her, and we made it back to the room by 10p. Apparently Pop got lost and did the thing like Nanny where he put his card in other people’s doors too, but he was at least in the right building and found it quick enough.

A quick shower, some internet surfing, and off to sleep I went.

Nanny’s score was 3300. She kept saying there were too many red dots and she didn’t know which was hers:rotfl2:.

I've always figured I'd have the same problem. :o I don't do video games, but my kids, who are all regular players, regularly get confused over who is who when playing Halo. :p

I think Disney needs to post signs where those ropes are letting people know that this area will be used for FP+ and will fill in. .

There were no signs? :sad2: Major snafu on Disney's part, IMHO, and you got the fallout.

OTOH, if I were looking for somewhere to stand, I probably would have assumed that area was reserved and there'd eventually be people there, since I know they do that sort of thing at Epcot (are there signs at Epcot?). Maybe it's less of a deal at Epcot because there's no parade. :confused3 I hear more horror stories about parades than I do anything else -- line cutters wind some people up, but they still don't seem to cause as much ugliness right there, if you see what I mean. Unless you count the trolly show, the only "parade" we've done is the "Move It, Shake It Street Party," which we loved, but that doesn't gather the crowds the regular parades do.

What I thought sounded great about the parade Fastpass was that you wouldn't have to fight for your space or get grief over it -- instead, you got to skip the waiting time, but got more grief than average! :(

Have you ever been to a Disney parade where people were nice and let you in to see and actually sat down in front? No? Then why would they think...oh nevermind!
I think you need to draw a map for the grandparents to find their way back to the room.....:lmao:

Pretty good trip so far though - lots of cupcakes!!

I am LOVING that your inlaws just try all the rooms hoping that they will eventually find the right one :) Can't wait to read more of your TR!

Found your TR and am caught up now. Wonderful that you were able to get down a few days before DH and the boys. Sounds like you had a great time even tho the in laws kept getting lost. Bummer about the FP+ and the parade. It stinks when people jam in so tight and I agree Disney should have known better.

I'm so subbing. Sounds interesting so far. popcorn:: You are never bored with your in-laws around.

Enjoying your TR so far !! Just like you, I caught the Disney bug on my first trip ever with my family at age 41. Thankfully, we are all completely hooked and really enjoy our trips. DH moans about money and things like that, but he does that anyway. You are lucky to have a such a great relationship with your in-laws. Looking forward to reading more !!

Oh, I take a day off and lookie here:cool1:

I don't do video games either, but I was able to beat Brian one time before we left:lmao:

I didn't see any signs and I can only assume there weren't since these people were so IRATE:confused3

Sadly, this is so true. Parades seem to always be an issue for us, and actually we have another aweful issue our next day at DHS

What I thought sounded great about the parade Fastpass was that you wouldn't have to fight for your space or get grief over it -- instead, you got to skip the waiting time, but got more grief than average! Yeah, that's what I thought, it sounded lovely in theory:sad1: :(

I think it was Day 4 before they could find their way without some issue:confused3

Pretty good trip so far though - lots of cupcakes!!

Thanks;) I love Disney cupcakes, but still didn't get to try all the ones I want to try, guess I'll have to start planning my re-do trip

Enjoying your TR!!!:wave2:Thank you!

I know, they were pretty funny about it. After my FIL did it too, my MIL was sure I'd be getting a call from the front desk requesting us to move or leave:rotfl2:

Welcome :cheer2:, I think that the key to a successful (well somewhat successful) trip for me is to always have Chuck come later. The boys would have been fine earlier, but Chuck is just so into napping that it's frustrating touring with him, stay tuned for that. It was really nice to just be able to do some things alone though, and really makes me want that solo trip even more:thumbsup2

I'm so subbing. Sounds interesting so far. popcorn:: You are never bored with your in-laws around.
:wave2: You are not kidding, I found myself torn between either cracking up at their antics or wanting to scream, there was rarely a dull moment

Count me in!!:cheer2:Welcome:cheer2:

Thank you! I could go every year, but Chuck won't let me:confused3 I do love my in-laws, they are so sweet and thoughtful and as much as they drove me nuts this trip, I'm very glad we did it. You just never know what can happen in the future and we did make some great memories. Also, I selfishly like for my kids to see that we do so much with them, so maybe they won't forget about me when they get families of their own:beach:

Day 3 coming up next!

This was our DHS day
IMG_2152.jpg

and Nanny’s most anticipated ride.
IMG_2153.jpg

She absolutely loves Toy Story Mania and she wants to practice before the boys get there. We are at the bus stop by 8 and at DHS by 8:30. I had read reports where they open the park a little early in order to avoid the stampede, so we were in place when they opened at 8:45. We got on line immediately and rode it
IMG_2154.jpg

Then got fastpasses for 11-12. We were done by 9:09!!

I didn’t want to leave the area since I wanted to see Phineas and Furb and they didn’t come out til 9:30, so we went over to watch the Muppets and took some photos along the way. (I love the Muppets and could watch this show over and over, even though I’m not fond of that stupid waldo 3-d character).
IMG_2158.jpg

IMG_2156.jpg

Notice Pop is in a pretty good mood here.

Apparently the Muppet theater lets you out right where Phineas and Furb meet! So I got right in line, there were only three people in front of me. They were so so cute!!! I took this pic and texted it to the boys with a message “gitchie gitchie goo baby I love you!”. To which I got a response from DS17 of “you’re ridiculous”. To which I said, “why are you texting during school”, to which I got ignored…
IMG_0095.jpg

We went over and did the Great Movie Ride, tried to do the Animation academy (wasn’t doing a show til 1p???). We ended up going to Starring rolls for lunch a little early.

We each got a sandwich (unfortunately I took a bite before the pic, sorry:confused3)
IMG_0099.jpg

This sandwich was so good. Even though it looks like a lot of bread, it was very soft and fresh.

I got the famous red-velvet cupcake, and it is definitely worth all the hype.
IMG_0096.jpg

IMG_0100.jpg

Nanny got an eclair, and Pop got the fruit tart
IMG_0098.jpg

IMG_0097.jpg

After lunch, we did the Little Mermaid, then went right over to see Beauty and the Beast. During this morning, I have been playing telephone tag with the football trainer, and my phone rings while I’m waiting for Beauty and the Beast to start.

He says he realizes that I’m in Florida and that Matt is joining me that night. He is requesting that we just have him tape his pinky to his ring finger (not scotch tape of course, the white stuff used for injuries) for the week so it has a chance for the swelling to go down, then let’s see how it is upon our return. Ok, so I text Chuck to pick up some tape on his way. Do you think he brings it? Do you? Do you? Nope, he doesn’t. He doesn’t even offer up an excuse:confused3??? WTH:rolleyes2.

Needless to say, it was still swollen when we returned home and I needed to take him to an urgent care place to get an x-ray. It was just sprained, but kept him out of football for another week. Not a big deal I suppose, but it just was grating on me this trip that I felt like the only adult with 5 kids:crowded: (ok, vent overwith)

Getting back to DHS, It would seem that Pop has had about enough of hanging out with us as he’s getting quite crabby by this point, and nothing Nanny says is right, so the afternoon starts to get a little uncomfortable.

We go into American Idol since it’s air conditioned and will require no talking. Somehow Nanny positions it so I’m between her and Pop. Well this is awkward… and things continue downhill from here…

But first I have to tell you about our Idol experience. There are two cute little teen girls and one 50ish slightly overweight woman who is described by the Simon judge as a “hauty Tupperware mom”. Which fit exactly, and I thought, “this poor woman doesn’t have a chance against those two, based on stage presence alone”. Well, the first teen girl sang and she was pretty good, and was moving around the stage like she was meant to be there, then the Tupperware mom came out and just looked awkward up there. That is, until she opened her mouth. She took over that stage like she owned it, and had an absolutely amazing voice. She sang “I need a hero” by Bonnie Tyler, which the judges said was one of the hardest in their catelogues. She just belted it out, and I would’ve sworn she was lip syncing, she sounded just like Bonnie! I found myself wondering if Bonnie Tyler was touring DHS today and thought it would be funny to compete and sing her own song. I was actually looking for similarities.

She got a well deserved standing ovation from the audience, and the Randy judge just sat there with his mouth hanging open. Then the poor third girl had to come out and perform. She did pretty good too, but neither of the cute teen girls was anywhere in the league of that woman.

After Idol, we line up on the sidewalk for the Pixar Parade. We scout out a spot that has a little shade. It’s like 2:40, and there’s not many people lining up yet. A lady and her young son (maybe 4) sit next to us, with an older woman I believe to be grandma. The parade route fills in and it’s just about to start, and a different lady behind me actually says “are you staying for the parade?” I must’ve looked at her like she had two heads, what did she think I was doing here? I told her yes. She and her husband and 4 kids stood behind us (we were sitting on the curb, so they had a good view), but she kept bumping into me with her stroller, and did the same to Nanny. It wasn’t hard, just annoying. But wait, it gets better….

The parade is going on (and it’s such a cute parade, sucks that we had this distraction), and the CMs are encouraging everyone to come dance in the streets. The lady that was sitting next to me, and her young son get up to dance, they don’t even take 3 steps and the lady behind me pushes her kids into the spot the lady and her son were sitting in and tells them to sit down. I could not believe what I just saw:furious:.

Heck with the parade, I was sure there was going to be a smack down.

Seriously, the parade is moving, so these people aren’t going to be dancing the whole parade, they are going to want to sit back down in a minute. The lady that was dancing was yelling to the grandma to “just leave it, some people are just so rude”. Well, she’s a better person than I am, cause I don’t think that I would’ve let that one go.

Here's a few pics of the parade, I just thought is was absolutely adorable, I love the Pixar characters:

IMG_2169.jpg

Meanwhile….Pop is sitting on the other side of Nanny, so I don’t know what’s going on over there. But when the parade ends, a woman is apologizing to him.

It would seem that her backpack was sitting on the ground next to Pop and she had something in her backpack that spilled all over the sidewalk, and is now all over the back of Pop’s shorts. I don’t mean a little something either, I mean he looks like he just got off Kali River Rapids. He is soaked. He is embarrassed because it looks like he peed himself.

And now we are supposed to be heading out to Boma for our 4:30 reservation:crazy2:.

The lady that was dancing was yelling to the grandma to “just leave it, some people are just so rude”. Well, she’s a better person than I am, cause I don’t think that I would’ve let that one go.

Wow!!! :rolleyes2 Some people are so rude!!!
