Long Island Medium

Basically. She cold reads, and none too adeptly.

People who do this know what they're doing, they play the odds, lead people, fill in and string people along.

I've seen bits of the show and she's basic.

Like one I saw she walked up to a 50-something guy in a garage I think it was, all 'you lost someone, your father?' Think about the odds there. She seems to use that a lot - 'you lost someone/a man/someone close to you/a brother or father/someone who left too young/etc.' She plays odds with people of certain demographics.

Most people have someone, men statistically die sooner than women, most people think whomever died went too soon, she targets people who fit better odds, etc.

People who want to believe help without realizing it. Like someone who does this can start with 'you lost someone close to you, a man....or she might try your father or brother' then if the person is all 'omg, my cousin' the reader can try like 'you were very close growing up...or you were like brothers' well if they weren't, that wouldn't have been what came to mind, you know? They play odds with the names, they know what names were more popular when, like if it's an Italian-seeming, 50-something person from an Italian family she might try the name starts with a J or an A... no hit, then go to 'hmm, did they go by a nickname... were they a Junior, or etc.

The garage guy I think it was, she was all 'did your dad call you buddy?' Again, what're the odds that a man's (especially a blue-collar type guy of that age) father, at some point at least, probably in childhood, called the son buddy? Causes of death, she can also play odds and people help without realizing it. 'Was it something to do with the chest?' How much ground does that cover? A lot. Again, she's got odds. Then if you say no, she might say 'with the abdomen, I see something in that area *gesture*?' Huge odds if you're now asking about if it was the entire torso. If it's one of the 'so young' the odds are different (it was an accident?/you were all shocked''), etc.

There's an ad used to run all the time with 'did he wear a name tag/he wore a name tag' First, again, think how much ground that covers, from garage worker to cashier to dr. to etc. There were probably also hints they gave her (I only saw the ad), like that it was likely a blue-collar job, etc., or there was something in the house that'd lead her to guess that.

When I've seen bits of her, she goes with huge odds, asks very broad and lets people narrow for her, moves along if she doesn't get a hit, etc. She's not particularly adept, there are people do it better and make it look more impressive. It's an old, old act. I think people who do it are fairly awful.

I love the show the "Mentalist" - it's a crime drama about a medium who retired from faking his readings (which he made a ton of money doing) now working with the police department to solve cases. His strength - acute powers of observation.
I watch the LI Medium for a bit during the marathon yesterday out of curiosity as my faith does not permit belief in such things and laughed out loud when she was talking to this woman during a pedicure saying "you are going a big change in your life - a new adventure" or something to that effect. Both looked shocked when the woman announced she was getting married. Well, duh - I saw the big rock on her finger, too! LOL.
The "medium" probably just picks up cues from body language, micro expressions, dress, and personal items around them and their house and then as the previous posters says - plays the odds. Of course, everyone knows someone who has passed so that one is a given.

Something else I wonder about is that if someone really has these talents, shouldn't they be doing more? I'm not sure what, but something!

I agree with FlightlessDuck. It seems that all reality shows are fake. Gee, even House Hunters is set-up!

Ok out of curiosity , I just watched 2 shows on demand.

Im skeptical on these things.

I would like to see a reading unedited from start to finish.
They never show anyone saying no to her questions.

I feel like the OP if she has this "gift", can she help Law Enforcement with unresolved murders and such?

I'll believe it when, during a reading, she says something like "I see your wife, she is right by your side with her hand on your shoulder and please know that....well....yes, it is your fault, you should feel guilty. How many times did she tell you to get those brakes on the Olds checked? I'm hearing the word 'idiot,' does that have any meaning to you?"

:p Sick, yes, I'm sick.

I don't know...I enjoy the show but all of these reality shows are so carefully edited that I don't believe any of them. The woman has a skill, for sure, even if it is very keep perception. It's something and really, she does seem to do good.

No because that doesn't happen. Some people with missing family members will hire these types to "work with" the police and some small departments may have tried it too but that's one of those urban legends. Doesn't happen. The people who all claim they've 'worked with police' are nearly all hired by the family. Cops tend to know better.

I watched last night's episode too. Are you talking about the salon where she hadnt gone before? I dont remember anything about getting married. I do remember her asking a lady if she had kids and she was pregnant and hadnt told anyone..

But the producers could have gone there before and set the whole thing up. Maybe even hired actors. How do we know?

I was thinking this when I read this thread over the weekend. I'd really believe it when she says to someone, "Yeah, you REALLY messed up by not attending gran's funeral. She was so disappointed you were not there."

Even if she is faking but really performs like she does on the show, I don't have a problem with it. Some people will spend thousands in therapy and that is acceptable, so $50-$92 for someone to get closure is absolutely worth it in my opinion. She really seems to help some get through survivor's guilt. I don't care if she's just really observant, if it helps people that is all that matters to me.

The few times I've seen her show, she seems very likeable and sincere. I can't watch it though, it always makes me cry.

Did anyone see the spoof of her they did on SNL? It was pretty funny.

It always makes me cry also! I think it's because I want to believe so bad. I think would my dad step forward and say something about me or to me? I hope so if I ever get a chance to meet her!

That was hysterical! However, I believe their is a method to "faking" this (as was demontrated to the kids and I on an episode of South Park :lmao:).

Mileage varies.

I think it's pretty reprehensible to profit off grief and desperation. They're bad, bad people imo.

If someone wants to see how it's done, there's likely video of the Amazing Randi doing it someplace. I think one of them who took his challenge too, but then ran away or whatever.

This guy is really good. We use to use a lady name Lisa Greene but she has not been feeling well and it has interfer with talking to the animals. ok I know that sounds weird, lol. She doesn't do people, her personal choice, but Charles does.

http://charlespeden.wordpress.com/

My sister and her friend called him because the friend wanted to hear about her dog that had just passed. No problems with telling her about her dog but he kept seeing a forest and it was confusing him. He then said he kept seeing airplanes from the war yrs ago, something like that.
He asked if either one of them knew someone that flew airplanes during the war. My sister said, oh my God that is Forest the man I use to take care of. Well Forest is still alive but has Alzheimer's. Charles told my sister that Forest wants his sisters to talk to him. The sisters moved Charles closer to them so my sister no longer cared for him.
My sister called one of the sisters and told her to please go chat with Forest so he would stop interfering with their readings lol.

Count me in as a crier, too. I got back from a disney trip a couple weeks ago feeling blue. I sat down and watched 2 hours on demand, and sobbed. Lol!

I like her, but I liked john edwards, too.

So funny, so wonderful! I re-watched it like three times!

I love Theresa! And in one episode she visited my hometown of East Northport.

However, I can't stand her family. I think her kids are spoiled brats. Her husband is beginning to grow on me.

I've tried searching for the SNL skit and can't find it. Does someone have a link?

I don't know about the show but I know 2 people she picked to read at a local event and she was spot on with everything she said.
