Non-running Trip Details Update: A DISCOUNT...with a twist

I did a post about a month ago with details about our resort and ADRs for the marathon trip. Early on we had decided to take the plunge and stay at the Polynesian, all the while crossing our fingers and toes that a discount would come out at some point.

Yesterday the first one was released! (Thanks again steph0808 for letting me know about it...you're awesome! :goodvibes)

Rather than call to update my reservation right away as I should have, I was a responsible worker and got some stuff done. These trips have to be paid for somehow, right?! As a result I didn't actually get on the phone with Disney until almost 3PM...:worried:

...

...do you see where this is going??

After about 3 minutes on hold I talked to a very nice CM who took a look at my reservation (4 nights at the Polynesian in the cheapest room they had) and informed me that there were no rooms in that category that could use this discount.

I actually wasn't too shocked by this. I know Disney only puts aside a certain number of rooms that can use these discounts, and I did take my sweet time calling...so it's possible that all of the discounted rooms in the category we wanted were already snatched up, or that there were never any discounted rooms in our category to begin with. :confused3 We'll never know.

The CM let me know that there WERE Polynesian rooms available with the discount, but they were themepark view rooms. The price from our original reservation would drop only $100 if we booked one. As tempting as it was to say "Heck yes! I want to wake up looking at the Magic Kingdom each morning! :hyper:" I turned that one down. At that point I asked her to give me some more prices and called Will to talk it over. We quickly made a decision (one that I probably could have just made when I was on the phone with the first CM, but I wanted to be a good wife and run it by Will first ) and then I called Disney back. This time I was on hold for 20 minutes! Yikes! I guess word was out about the discount. But luckily the call went fine and we got the new room we wanted.

It's not at the Polynesian.

:( However, it is at...

THE GRAND FLORIDIAN. THE GRAND FREAKIN' FLORIDIAN. :yay:

(Hmm...will I not fit in at the GF if I use the work "FREAKIN'"? :upsidedow)

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed to not be staying at the Polynesian, but making the switch to the Grand Floridian saves us $400 with this discount. And let's face it, it's not exactly like we're taking a step down in resort quality, ya know?! Really, when one's biggest "problem" in life is "darn, I'm staying at the Grand Floridian instead of the Polynesian!" life ain't too bad. :thumbsup2

The more I think about this resort switcharoo, the more I like it. We've wanted to stay at the GF for awhile now but never really thought it was possible ($$$), so we're pretty excited about this. I know there are people who find the place stuffy, but we don't (weirdly enough we felt more uncomfortable during dinner at the Contemporary in 2011 :confused3). And we still get to stay on the monorail - a first for us - meaning that I don't have to change any of our ADRs. So we'll still be at the Polynesian quite a bit. And I am SO looking forward to easy access to the Magic Kingdom (assuming the monorails aren't having work done at the point). Plus, I know that the marathon race course goes right by the GF, so Will can just stumble out of the room and watch us run by! :thumbsup2

I do have a couple of concerns, the bigger one being the not-really-happening-but-come-on-we're-not-idiots-Disney DVC construction going on at the Grand Floridian. From what I've read it sounds like most of the current refurbishments going on now should be done by January, except for the spa...which I wasn't planning on using anyway. But you never know. And if I'm being 100% truthful, I'm nervous that the room decor is going to look like my grandma styled it. No offense to my grandma, but...ya know. :upsidedow

So that's the big trip news! I know people change their resorts all the time, but I am SO not like that. This is the first time we've switched it up (not counting 2011 when our point rental at Kidani fell through 1 month before the trip  and we switched to Jambo...but technically it's still the same resort...sort of)...so I have some research to do!

And we WILL stay at the Polynesian some day...I hope. Just not the right time I guess!

Happy Friday!! :yay:

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!:banana::banana:I am yelling woo hoo for you!!! I too covet the Grand Floridian and one day will get there! We did the discount also but booked the dining package at POR!! I got 2 boys that are 10 and 14 and they eat me out of house and home so the food discount is always better than the room. Maybe one day Grand Floridian will happen:goodvibes Until then I will have to live vicariously thru you!!

Okay, good. I'm glad. :) Like I said, I've never run a night race at Disney before but from what I've read they seem totally different from the morning races. I think you'll like it!

And GUH...I'm still totally jealous of that ToT medal. I'll get one someday!!

Thank you!! :yay: And hey, congrats on getting most (all?) of your dining paid for with that discount. I'm sure your boys will definitely eat their money's worth!!

Very well I feel great.. Need to get. In a 5 or 6 mile run tomorrow!!! :).

Awesome!! :) Glad to hear it's still going well.

Too bad about the Poly - I just booked last night and they still had availablity according to the CM I talked to. :confused3

We are booked at the Contemporary!! We have been coveting the Contemporary ever since we first went to Disney back when I was 11 and saw how the monorail went right inside! Oh, what makes a child happy. haha

I did want the Grand Floridian, but maybe next time (my Dad is enamored with the Contemporary so we went there - it is a family reunion, my husband can't come so it's just my parents and brother and me! Gotta keep the least Disney fan, Dad, happy!).

Week 6: Run #4 (7 miles scheduled, 12-mile run completed - two 6-ish mile loops)
Saturday, October 6, 2012
Weather: high 40s/low 50s degrees, sunny with some clouds. PERFECT!

24 miles completed/18 miles planned for the week
103 miles completed so far in training

GREAT run today! :yay:

I did my usual pre-run routine (coffee + plain bagel with peanut butter) and didn't get out the door until about 12:30...I really need to get these things started earlier. I'd really like to be FINISHING these runs around noon. :headache: I predict this is something I'll continue to struggle with... :rolleyes2

Anyway, right before the run I ate 4 Gu chomps (really hungry this morning for some reason :confused3)...here are the splits:

Mile 1 - 10:30
Mile 2 - 10:35
Mile 3 - 11:02 - walk/water break at the beginning of this mile
Mile 4 - 11:02
Mile 5 - 11:11 - walk/water/Gu chomp break at the beginning of this mile
Mile 6 - 10:24
Mile 7 - 10:28 - walk/water break at the beginning of this mile
Mile 8 - 10:13
Mile 9 - 11:34 - walk/water/Gu chomp break at the beginning of this mile...I also fiddled with my music - a playlist that consisted of MuppetVision 3D Area music loop, Magic Kingdom Entrance Loop and Magical Express Area Music Loop :thumbsup2 - and texted Will that I had 4 miles to go, so this was a LONG break!
Mile 10 - 10:14
Mile 11 - 10:35 - walk/water break at the beginning of this mile
Mile 12 - 10:01

Total time: 2:07:50 for 12 miles
Average pace: 10:39/mile

I really enjoyed this run! I think a lot of it had to do with the weather...just perfect today. I took a 15-minute ice bath after and I feel pretty good. I'm really happy with my pacing...wahoo!

Enjoy your Saturday!!

Random picture alert...seems very doubtful that the Christmas stuff will still be up during marathon weekend :worried:

HMM...standard view rooms? I wonder if the CM tricked me...:upsidedow It's okay though, I know we'll get to the Poly someday. Now that we have the GF booked I'm totally hooked on the idea of staying there! :thumbsup2

Congrats on getting the Contemporary!! I think the rooms look so awesome there. Nice of you to accomodate your dad's wishes (and I totally get what you mean about keeping the least Disney fan happy...that's what I try to do with my mom and brother :rolleyes2). I hope you guys love it there. :)

Week 6: Rest Day
Sunday, October 7, 2012

AHHHH....:beach:

Super lazy day...loved it. Just ran a few errands and then stayed in for the rest of the day watching play-off baseball. The above icon is more reflective of the fact that the day was very relaxing and does NOT reflect the weather. It was gross out - high 40s and rain all day. I'm so glad I did my long run on Saturday! My legs were a bit sore, but not too bad! :thumbsup2

Week 7: Run #1 (3 miles on the treadmill)
Monday, October 8, 2012

3 miles completed/24 miles planned for the week
106 miles completed so far in training

For whatever reason, this run seemed like it absolutely FLEW by this morning. No complaints here!

Not much else to say about the run...it was a typical treadmill run. I felt stiff for the first quarter-mile or so. Once I loosened up I felt pretty good. :thumbsup2 My legs seem to be totally recovered from Saturday's 12-miler.

Stats from the run:

Total Time: 29:49 for 3 miles
Average pace: 9:57ish/mile (?)

So my running schedule is going to be pretty thrown off this week with my heading to West Virginia this weekend for our family friend's wedding. I figured out that I'm going to need to leave home at 8AM on Saturday to drive to my mom's house (an hour away) and then I'll be in the car for another 2.5 hours to get to the wedding. At this point I'm trying to shuffle things around and come up with a way to not make myself completely miserable on Saturday. Here's what I'm leaning toward right now:

Monday: 3-mile run (don't feel like going to yoga today...what a bum :upsidedow)
Tuesday: 5-mile run after work (tennis season is over so Will is going to be home early from now until March! :yay:)
Wednesday: strength training/yoga
Thursday: 3-mile run/yoga
Friday: 7-mile run
Saturday: Rest Day
Sunday: Rest Day

So with the above schedule I wouldn't miss any runs, but I would miss 1 day of strength training. I'm debating on whether I want to head in to work tomorrow morning to get a strength training session in, or if I want to move that 3-miler on Thursday to Saturday morning (7AM I guess) and do strength training on Thursday. Right now I'm leaning toward just being satisfied with keeping the above schedule, because I feel like trying to cram too much in would be a bad idea. Hmm...:scratchin

In other schedule shuffling news, I'm pretty sure that I DON'T want to run that 5K on the 20th. It would mess stuff up too much and since my main focus right now IS marathon weekend, I should really only fit in races that make sense with my schedule (i.e. the Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot). Oh well. The 5K will be there next year.

So that's all from me! TTFN!

Congrats on the hubby time until March!! I may not have said it yet but you always impress me with your dedication to training for this Dopey Challenge!!! I have another question for you so....I have been getting blisters on my feet and have lost toenails :scared: ever since I got fitted for my new running shoes. I switched from brooks that killed my shins to asics that are doing this. Is that normal or do you have any advice on helping that? I also went a half size bigger in the asics. Okay shower me with you knowledge;)

Shannon- wanted to tell you that GP deals came out today, and on the website it looks like Polynesian has standard view rooms available at the 35% off rate now. :confused3

Thank you! :)

Hmm...I'm not sure how much I can help with the toenail problem. I've never really had that issue before! Off the top of my head...

- Do you keep your toenails trimmed? That's definitely important.
- Is the toe box in your new pair of shoes wide enough?
- I've heard of people actually going an ENTIRE whole size up in their running shoes! I wonder if that would help?
- If you think the size is okay, I've also heard that the shoes should be laced tighter so that your foot doesn't slide around too much in the shoe. If it does, your toes may ram up against the front of the shoe, putting pressure on your toenails.

I'd suggest going back to your running store and asking their advice, or maybe posting about this in the WDW Marathon Weekend thread in the Events & Competition Section of this board...you might get better help than what I'm trying to give you here. :)

As for the blisters, what kinds of socks do you wear? You may need to invest in a few new pairs, specifically ones made of synthetic material (NOT cotton!). I used to run in Adidas socks and would get blisters, and I switched to Balega Hidden Dry - voila! I rarely get them anymore (and when I do it's only on days when I run really far and it's really hot out). Synthetic socks are PRICEY but worth it if you're going to be running a lot. :thumbsup2 I hope this helps!

Really?? I just looked on the Disney site and didn't see and availability at the Polynesian. :( The universe is telling me it's not meant to be! I guess I'll just have to settle for the Grand Floridian...darn! :upsidedow Thanks for the heads up though! I need to start bugging my brother to book his room!

Week 7: Strength training and Run #2 (5 mile out-and-back)
Tuesday, October 9, 2012
Weather - sun with some clouds, low 60s

8 miles completed/24 miles planned for the week
111 miles completed so far in training

Well, despite the fact that I said I didn't want to cram too much in this week, I got in both a strength training session AND a run yesterday. And this is what I looked like at the end of the day: :faint:

:lmao:

Strength training was fine yesterday. I left my desk at 11AM to give a presentation at one of our satellite locations (my 3rd presentation in 3 weeks! I HATE speaking in front of people! WAHH!) and as a result I got home earlier than normal. The weather was really nice, and I just wanted to be DONE, so I was really moving (compared to normal :upsidedow).

Mile 1 - 10:11
Mile 2 - 10:03
Mile 3 - 9:45
Mile 4 - 9:37
Mile 5 - 9:15

Total time: 48:52 for 5 miles
Average pace: 9:46/mile

I thought I'd really hate running after work since I do it so rarely. It wasn't bad, but I still really don't prefer it. With the timing of my presentation I found myself eating part of my lunch on my way home and was then battling a painful cramp for the first half of the run. Coincidence? I think not.

After my run I showered and absolutely hit the wall. I was SO tired. :faint: But at least I got it done!

And in keeping with my little resolution to myself to put more pictures in this report (whether they are related to what I'm writing or not)...here's random Chip & Dale picture #1!

Wednesday, October 10, 2012

11 miles completed/24 miles planned for the week
114 miles completed so far in training

I feel like this run had the potential to be really awful after my busy day yesterday...thankfully it wasn't. :)

I slept like a baby last night and really had trouble getting up this morning. I really had to convince myself not to sleep an extra hour. "It will be worth it...it will be worth it..." That's that I kept telling myself..."it" being having my runs done early so I don't have to worry about it with my out-of-town trip this weekend, and of course "it" being my having a successful marathon weekend. :thumbsup2

Once I was out of bed though it was just like every other day. I did feel stiff and a bit sore for the first half-mile of the run, but once I was warmed up it went okay!

Total time: 29:17 for 3 miles
Average pace: 9:46ish/mile??

I predict I will once again be completely exhausted by the time I get home. :faint:

I am amazed at your ability to will yourself out of bed in the mornings to go run. I usually do my runs after work and I feel like I'm constantly moving from the time I leave work until dinner is done and we're sitting down to eat! I'm not quite sure how people do it with kids in the mix too :confused3 My evenings would be so much easier if I could get out of bed with enough time to get a run in before work but I have a hard enough time getting up to just get to work on time :scared1:

Thanks! :goodvibes Part of it is knowing that I signed up for the races and need to get the training in, and part of it is just that I have been doing this for so long now (running before work...I started in January or February) that it's become a habit, something that I thought would NEVER happen. It began as something I did out of necessity (with Will coaching tennis after school I had to make sure to be home for the monster pup :lovestruc), but now that tennis is over I'm still a morning runner because of what you're describing...I really like coming home right after work and just knowing that it's DONE. :thumbsup2

And yeah, I totally know what you mean when you say that you don't know how people with kids do it. My hat's off to them...I have a hard enough time managing the dog!

Week 7: Strength training
Thursday, October 11, 2012

Another good strength training session today, except for when I got to planks at the end. I suck horribly at these. :crazy2:

This is going to end up being a yoga-less week for me. I just haven't felt like going, and since I'm keeping up well with the other parts of my training plan, I figure I can give myself a break. One thing I am NOT doing well with is getting enough sleep...I really need to change that. Somehow I feel like if I get more sleep I'll be more motivated to go to yoga rather than being a lazy slug at my desk for an extra hour...who knows. :confused3

Have a lovely afternoon!

Week 7: Run #4 (12 miles scheduled, 7 mile out-and-back completed)
Friday, October 12, 2012
Weather: Low 40s, overcast and breezy

18 miles completed/24 miles planned for the week
121 miles completed so far in training

All of the schedule flip-flopping I've been doing over the past 2 weeks is definitely catching up to me, but it was worth it...I haven't missed and runs or strength training, and I'm now looking at 2 rest days in a row (!) during my short out-of-town trip. :thumbsup2

Pretty good run today. I wore my running tights, a jacket, my ear warmer and a hat, and I think I was a tad bit overdressed - I may have been more comfortable in a long-sleeved tech shirt instead of the jacket and no ear warmer. :confused3 Oh well.

This was on where I pretty much rolled out of bed, threw on some clothes and headed out the door, so rather than eat toast or something that I would need to wait on to digest I had half a bag of blueberry-pomegranate Gu chomps (4) and felt fine. I think I can handle 3-4 miles without breakfast, but any longer than that I need FOOD! :upsidedow

Splits:

Mile 1 - 10:31
Mile 2 - 10:04
Mile 3 - 9:58
Mile 4 - 9:45
Mile 5 - 10:25 - stopped for a walk break and finished my bag of Gu chomps (4) at the beginning of this mile
Mile 6 - 9:36
Mile 7 - 9:26

Total time: 1:09:45 for 7 miles
Average pace: 9:58/mile

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND! :yay:
