2012 Marching Band Season -- it's almost here!

We lost our game by 2 last night. Bummer. My boys got home at 12:30 and I had to wake them at 6:15 this morning! They rehearse here for an hour before boarding the bus to the contest. DS 15 will be marching! He's thrilled! Im so excited! Love the kids and love watching all the shows!

Homecoming last night for us too. Thursday was a parade, that goes around 1 large block....quite lame. Last night was the game, we lost 24-59. I watched the first half...we knew it was going to be bad when they scored on the opening play of the game.

A quiet weekend for us, next week is the game on Friday and competition on Saturday against some really good bands.

Home from our first contest. Disapponted, we didnt make Finals. We did get an award in our class for "music.". My Tuba Dudes were so disappointed. They stay and watch the Finals, so they wont be home until 12:30.

I loved seeing my boys out there together and was very proud of them! We are using electronics for the first time and had some glitches. Hoping next week goes better.

My prediction....Union will win the contest! Big and awesome!

Hope everyone had fun at your contests today!

We were off a little today. Color Guard was off don't know what we placed because hubby and I left early. It was starting to get cold and wet.

Just got back from a our first competition. The kids looked and sounded great and placed higher than last year :). My only regret is I didn't use sunscreen. Yikes. It was so much fun to see other bands and talk to parents from other schools!

Will anyone else be at Broken Arrow, OK next Saturday?

We will! Last year was the first year we went to the BA Invitational. I remember there being a lot of schools, maybe 24? This year there are only 16 listed on their website. We didnt make it to Finals last year, hoping to this year!

Tuba Dudes got home at 12:30 with more details. We got 13 th place by 1/2 point! Took a big hit for starting late, which was due to electronics not working! Makes them hopeful for upcoming contests!

I took this with my crappy cell phone camera at the parade yesterday- it came out pretty good. The band stopped RIGHT in front of me- right at my son's line! He is the tall trumpet player on the end with the two chevron stripes on his arm.

Great picture! What do the stripes mean? years in band?

The stripes are for positions held, like section leader, or band sargent major, etc. The number is based on how many years, but there are no more than three stripes. After threewhite stripes, you get gold stripes. It is kind of confusing how they do it.:rotfl:

well, our first competition was yesterday afternoon. as i predicted, the drum major, percussion, and band all got "1"s (superior-this is what you want to get) and the colorguard got a "2". this knocked our band out of getting a bob rush memorial award, and out of competition for best in class. UGH! i knew it was going to happen, because i've been watching portions of band practice for a few weeks, but it still steams me. they've had over 2 1/2 months, and they still can't get it right! our kids have worked so hard...it's really difficult to see them all look so defeated, due to one small group's laziness. and, yes, they ARE lazy. i watch them practice every weekday. i'm not speaking of ALL colorguards-just ours. what is all the more frustrating is that the band director likely won't say anything to them about it. he's one of those "everyone gets a trophy just for showing up" types.

First off, our trouble makers were talked to and had to tell us they were sorry for their actions.

Friday was an away game, so it was an easy night for us.

Saturday was districts for ISSMA. We stayed in town actually, travel times was about 25 minutes. YEA!! They did the band group picture before we left, so the kids actually traveled in uniforms and just took their shako boxes with them. Even being dressed, they still did a mad scramble to get gloves taped, guantlets on, hair pulled back - we have some guys with not quite shoulder length hair that ends up being in 2 or 3 pig tail, plumes on the shakos and lined up in two's. No concept of time management.

They performed well. CG looked a lot better than they did the week before. They got their last set of flags. DD said it's a 7 foot flag on a 12 foot pole. I think her dimensions are off, but they are bigger flags. All of the bands in our class got a gold rating and we all qualified to move onto regionals. Next week will be our last competition before the run for state really starts.

We had a district party Sat night. The parents were far rowdier than the kids. We went thru 26 large pizzas, 200 wings, 300 meatballs, a full sheet cake, and cookies. Plus back at the fire pit, they had 5 bags of marshmellows and the fixings for s'mores. Some how they talked a couple of the moms into playing chubby bunnies with them. The family that hosted the party, had let the neighbors know, so there wasn't any issues with 100+ people invading their area. Funny thing is, the one guys is a police officer and when he came home, in his patrol car, as he pulled up to their house, he hit the lights, freaking out the kids. They tattled on us grown ups and told him that we couldn't hold our pop very well and were the one's laughing, hootin and hollerin.

Here was their cake.:

The 3 in the middle, are they rifles, sabers, or batons?

That is really cool.

Uuugggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!

Rain, rain, go away. Come again another day. Like some time after November the 3rd - that's state marching finals here.

The radar is a pretty mix of light and dark green, with just a touch of yellow here and there, all the way back across IN into IL. UUUGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

I don't think were are going to perform the whole show at half time this year, seeing as this is our last home football game of the season - unless we get a home game draw during playoff's. With a competition on saturday, I will render a really good 98.5% chance that we won't be in uniforms again tonight.

That will be 2 years in a row, that on both homecoming and senior nights, it'll be wet and miserable.

well, homecoming is tonight, and our 2nd competition is tomorrow. i don't really expect things to go any better tomorrow-i've been watching the last 10-15 minutes of practice each day; and, honestly, the colorguard hasn't improved at all. it makes me angry at the band director too, because he hasn't jerked a knot in their rear-ends and let them know they'd better get it in gear.
i'm praying i'm wrong, because the BAND has worked themselves into the ground, and really deserve to get superior ratings. our drum line is especially awesome.

BOA Conroe/Houston & tough, tough competition tomorrow! - Homecoming game tonight - busy weekend!

The band placed 2nd in a local competition last weekend!

I hope everyone has a great, safe weekend!

Is there a name for the type of judging where there are three categories: Music, Marching, and General Effect, and bands are given one of five scores: Poor, Fair, Good, Excellent, and Superior?

jen - We have 3 twirlers and they are AMAZING!!!! Last week they were featured in a song and twirled 3 fire batons, each! Our advisor is a world-champion and we all love to watch him twirl too.

Game tonight and rain is predicted...
Competition tomorrow but rain only in the morning, so we should be good by 4:30 when we march but it is supposed to be cold. It was 76 yesterday and a high of only 50 tomorrow. Brr...

Have fun and good luck to everyone this weekend....

That sounds like BOA scoring, and their adjudication handbook (available on their website) says something about the Criteria Reference System, so maybe?
