Ice cream with peanut allergy

DD has a peanut allergy. Whenever we go to Beaches and Cream, they open a new container of ice cream for her to avoid cross-contamination. This is really the only place she has been able to have ice cream, other than the soft-serve variety. Has anyone had this experience at other places in the parks or on property? What about non-Disney businesses on property, such as the Fountain in the Dolphin, or Ghiradelli in DTD? I would just like to know our options, in case we don't make it to Beaches and Cream.

I'm sure every place at Disney runs into this a few times a day. Just let them know and they'll accomodate you. You may mention to please make sure they use a clean ice cream scoop, as well -- that will help you avoid any cross contamination..

My PA kids have had plain vanilla ice cream at Tony's in MK and Ohana at the Poly. At Brown Derby, they were able to order the Hidden Treasure, which includes vanilla ice cream, gummy worms and a chocolate chip cookie. The chef at Sci-Fi Dine-in made them chocolate sundaes with Mickey sprinkles. Special Diets told us to avoid Ghiradelli a few years ago.

Avoid ghiradelli. It's not safe. It's interesting because I have always been told that I cant have the ice cream in Disney b/c of cross contamination. I didn't think the brand of ice cream they use was safe (isn't it Edys?).

But for me, I can't have it anyway b/c there is too great of a risk of there being an issue because they have nuts in the ice cream restaurants as toppings. I have to avoid those places.

The one type of ice cream I can have at Disney is the soft serve. I went crazy at crystal palace because they have the soft serve machines and it was the only ice cream I could eat all week.

disfan, what about at resort food courts? Could chefs grab a fresh carton out of the freezer and scoop it in the allergy area of the kitchen where they don't bring nuts? I don't know about your Edy's comment as we have to stick with Tofutti but I'm just trying to think of ways for you to have more options.

From what I remember from living on the east coast, Edys used to carry a made in facility warning for nuts. It might have changed since I moved a few years ago. Isnt it edys ice cream that is used on property? I have not been able to find any commercially produced ice cream that is safe for my nut allergies(including dairy alternative ice creams)

If its not Edys anymore....ignore my comment...lol

I wasn't trying to suggest that Edys isn't an issue but rather I was saying I don't know if it is still Edys and if it is, if Edy's has a peanut warning or not as we can't eat it due to other allergies. I was actually trying to see if there are other ways you can get ice cream if it is a safe brand or maybe you can have Tofutti served the way I was describing. Here's Tofutti's peanut statement. Now that I look at it, if I'm remembering your level of sensitivity, you probably aren't comfortable with this as if I'm remembering correctly, you avoid anything that has peanuts anywhere in the facility regardless of their practices because you are that sensitive to peanuts.
26. Does Tofutti use peanuts in any of their products? If so, how do you make sure that there is no cross contamination?
Regarding peanuts, we do have a peanut flavored Cutie. Our Cuties are run on a completely separate line in the ice cream plant where our frozen dessert products are manufactured. Prior to running our Cuties each day, the equipment is specially cleaned under the supervision of a Rabbi to ensure that there is no possibility of dairy contamination. This special cleaning will also take care of any other type of contamination. We only run one particular flavor of Cuties each day, never splitting the day between two flavors. Peanut butter Cuties are always run at the end of the week, so there is nothing being run after them until the following week. Further, when we run the peanut butter Cuties we run up a large quantity so that it is only run infrequently. All ingredients and packaging is kept separate from the rest of our other products. We also have a stick novelty, Monkey Bars, which has peanut butter flavor in it. The same rules of the Cutie line apply to our stick novelty line. Our products are made in an ice cream plant where other peanut products are present. We therefore cannot guarantee that there will not be any peanut contamination, no matter how unlikely the possibility. As for our other products, our Soy Nuts and candy products are made in facilities that do use peanuts. The packaging of these products does list a warning, “May contain trace amounts of peanuts.” We also have a peanut butter cookie that does contain whole peanuts. If you feel that the preceding information raises your concerns about the safety of our products regarding peanut contamination, please do not use our products. Safety of our consumers is always our number one priority. If you require further clarification, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Back in January, DS had Edy's vanilla ice cream several places and we were told it was safe. We are not cross contamination reactive and we do eat " made in the same factory" but the chief did not really know that. They just told us that was the safe choice for us. At the wave, the chief was really nice and brought DS a HUGE bowl of sprinkles (from a new bag) and some fresh fruit to add on the ice cream. We have never found a "normal"chocolate chip cookie that was totally safe though we did find one with the "made in same factory" warning that we allow. I think DS had ice cream at almost every sit down we did as it was pretty much the only safe choice.

We've also had the vanilla ice cream at many table-service restaurants. I can't remember the brand, but were told that it was not cross-contaminated as we do avoid any possibility of cross contamination with PN or TN.

Dole Whip has also been safe in the past, which is like soft serve ice cream. It is PN/TN free and I believe it is also dairy free, but I'd check on the dairy part. It is available at Aloha Isle in Adventureland in MK - near the Jungle Cruise and at Captain Cook's at the Poly. It is available in pineapple, orange and vanilla. It is super-yummy and we make a special Dole Whip stop on every trip!

My peanut allergic dd was told she could have plain vanilla (with Hershey's syrup).

And yes, Dole Whips do contain dairy but are safe for PN allergies.

My DS has peanut and tree nut allergy. He has had ice cream at the Plaza in MK. Sci-Fi in HS, and Coral Reef in Epcot. They all opened new containers for him. Also all the buffets have the soft serve.
As far as Fountain in the Dolphin, we were told he couldn't have the ice cream. Whenever we eat there, for his dessert they give him a huge dish of strawberries.
I know a lot of people feel different about the Mickey Bars. My DS has been eating them for at least 5 years.
