What are the odds...?

Lumping all DVC resorts together and looking at historical data, what are the chances that we would be able to buy BLT direct in 2014? If not available, what are the chances of snagging a resale for BLT with our June UY. Is that a popular one? Total newbie here (duh!) and I'm going to have a ton of questions...just hope I'm not too annoying! :flower3:

I would think that you could buy points for BLT direct from DVC in 2014. But the real question is why would you? The resale prices are already much lower than direct and will likely be in the $80's by 2014. Here is a link to the UY distribution at each resort on dvcnews.com:

As you can see, June is the second largest UY month for BLT, although only 12.6% of the points, compared to Feb at 37.8%. Be glad you don't have Apr or Oct. With a little patience, I'm sure that you will find a Jun UY contract that meets your needs. Generally, the 160+ point contracts are more numerous than smaller contracts.

Good luck hunting and keep the questions coming. There are lots of folks here who can give you great advice!

Thanks! DH is still "iffy" on the whole resale thing and any restrictions we may encounter with that. Give us a few DVC years under our belt coupled with all the help we get from our fellow Disers and we will be shuffling points like pros! :goodvibes

approximately 100%.

as the list below shows, you can still buy the original DVC from 1991 (OKW) directly if money is no object ($100 per pt vs. $50-$60 resale).

on rare occasions, you might have to wait a few months for DVC to pick up a BLT contract by ROFRing a resale or foreclosing on a BLT owner...but DVC is constantly picking up inventory of so-called "sold out" resorts. they just don't actively try to sell them (no special promotions).

I was going to say the same thing as Kidanifan08. Why would you want to pay a whole lot more than you would pay for a resale?

Direct is great if for some reason you need to get that membership immediately. Or the only way you can get it is direct (like GFV). But you aren't really getting that much more by buying direct.

Ultimately all you are guaranteed is a DVC stay. Everything else could go away tomorrow.

With regards to the restrictions on resale contracts, they are really not that important. I remember sitting in the sales room when we bought our first contract direct from DVC. We were dreaming about how we could use our points for cruises, ABD, etc. Fast forward 4 years, and those options have increased so much in point cost that it is not even a consideration. We would be better offer paying cash for those other options and just using our points at DVC. In fact, we plan to do that for DCL at some point in the near future.

When you are ready to add more points, resale is the way to go. DVC is best used to stay at DVC. There are tons of threads discussing the pros and cons of resale vs. direct. Read and learn . . .

Disney loves to sell direct to less educated buyers. Adding the resale restrictions is also aimed at the less educated. IMO point usage outside of DVC resorts is smoke and mirrors used as a marketing tool. They tell and show you all of the ways that your points can be used but in small print it reads "subject to availability". They don't tell you that they purposely restrict availability so using your points outside can be challenging.
