Room only ??

We already know our 2014 January travel dates-- I have only ever booked the full package with WDW because we never plan this far out.

Is there an advantage to booking a room only resv now and then changing it to a package when they open up next year for 2014 trips? We are going between POR Royal Rooms and Boardwalk for our resort choices. Considering Disney doesn't sell out the way that it used to I'm wondering why the need to book the room so far in advance.

If you would book room only regardless, I would say book at 499 days out as it gives you plenty of time to make payments if you want to and have it paid off well in advance of your trip. But if you want a package to begin with, I would wait because I don't think you will have any problem getting the resort you want as soon as the 2014 rates/packages are released around August 2013. If you book just the room now and intend to change to a package later, the room only will have to be cancelled/refunded and the package booked, requiring a new $200 deposit, as money paid toward one cannot be applied to the other. A room only cannot be "converted" to a package as they are different reservation systems with different confirmation numbers and money cannot be transferred between the two.
