Yachtsman Steakhouse

DSC03085.jpg

I was super excited to try another new Disney restaurant – especially a Signature that specialized in steaks! We had a 7:35pm ADR and after walking over to the YC resort we checked in and were told it would be a short wait. By short wait, they meant about 15 minutes. Just long enough to get comfortable but not long enough to go tour the resort.

DSC03089.jpg

We were seated and our waiter Ricardo, from Bogota Columbia, introduced himself and welcomed us as he presented the menus. The menus were printed wishing us a Happy Anniversary so we were able to keep them as a souvenir. Nice!

Our drink orders were taken as we reviewed the menus; ice tea served with simple syrup on the side for Michael, water with lemon for Em, and I selected Sterling Vintner’s Collection Meritage from the wine menu. This is a blend of several varietals in a layered and complex wine that dominates the palate with Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) and Merlot (25%); with Cabernet Franc (8%), Petit Verdot (5%) and Malbec (2%) rounding out this full bodied wine. This was $10 by the glass for a bottle that is sold on-line for $9.99! I’m a cheap wino!

Ricardo brought the infamous bread basket to our table which was served with sourdough rolls and the oh, so amazing, one-is-not-nearly-enough pull apart onion rolls. The breads are delivered with sea salt sprinkled butter and a small cup of roasted garlic. I was afraid that starting on a bread course would disrupt my appetite for the glorious entrée that was to follow. However, I couldn’t simply sit there and look at those rolls so I exercised reckless abandon and buttered up one of the onion rolls and spent the next 60 seconds mmm-ing over this delightful little bun. After spreading a clove of roasted garlic over the other half of the roll, I spent the next 60 seconds ahhh-ing over the sweet garlic flavor. I preferred the fat option over the garlic, since the salted butter won over my taste buds immediately.

DSC03121.jpg

We decided to split a couple of appetizers, knowing full well that the outcome of that decision would directly affect my ability to successfully finish my meal. Michael chose the heirloom tomatoes while I chose the artisanal cheese plate. Unfortunately, I had completely forgotten that it was Yachtsman for which Jabead had shared that one of the cheeses was presented in the jar of goo! The main menu doesn’t disclose this fact – although if you ask for the cheese plate menu it states that the goat cheese is marinated in extra virgin olive oil.

Heirloom Tomatoes; burrata, black garlic, basil & sherry $15:

DSC03112.jpg

I had to wiki burrata since this rather looked like a blob of cream or uncolored silly putty. Burrata is a fresh Italian cheese, made from mozzarella and cream. The outer shell is solid mozzarella while the inside contains both mozzarella and cream giving it an unusual, soft texture. The taste was mild and creamy, buttery and fantastic. The tomatoes were rather artisanal themselves since they offered a selection of varieties that ranged from green to heirloom to a deep red version that bursted with concentrated flavor even though I don’t its name. You can also see in the photo that there is some type of aspic cubes of something that I was very afraid to try since I needed to reserve my napkin for delicately dabbing my mouth and not for spitting out revolting food. (Especially frowned upon in a Signature restaurant I’m certain!)

Artisanal Cheeses; Montegrappa, Fioro Sardo, Pave d’Affinois de Brebis, Beechmount Farm Cashel Bleu, and Vermont Creamery Bijou served with assorted breads and seasonal accoutrements - $16

DSC03111.jpg

I asked about the selection of cheeses displayed on the plate to which Ricardo presented me with a copy of the cheese menu. Here’s a run-down on the variety of cheeses:

DSC03113.jpg

From left to right on the cheese plate;
Beechmount Farm Cashel Bleu: a cow’s milk bleu that is served with caramelized white chocolate. I really liked this pungent cheese but then again I am a bleu cheese lover.

Pave d’Affinois de Brebis: a French sheep’s milk cheese made in the Rhone Alps accompanied with tomato marmalade. I wasn’t a fan of this soft cheese.

Fioro Sardo (also known as pecorino sardo): A firm Italian cheese made from sheep’s milk on Sardinia with a nutty tangy flavor. Accompanying this cheese was pickled grapes. This was one of my two favorites on the plate.

Montegrappa: Another Italian cheese from Northern Italy which is firm and cheddar like with hints of brown butter and walnuts. It was served with summer stone fruits. This was the other cheese that I really thought was delicious. I loved the tangy sharp flavor.

Lastly, Vermont Creamy Bijou: This is a young aged goat cheese that has a soft tangy interior with a nutty wrinkled rind that is marinated in Tanzanian peppercorns, thyme, and extra virgin olive oil. This was presented with a pretzel bread stick and sesame crisp. As quoted in my text to Jabead – “ICK”…I did NOT like this cheese or the goo in which it was stewing, I mean marinating.

I may have distracted my fellow dining companions with a “hey look it’s Mickey” so I could grab more of the Montegrappa and Fioro Sardo.

Here's the photo from my phone that I texted to Jabead illustrating the vile goo:

Coming up: Yachtsman Steakhouse Part 2

Yachtsman Steakhouse Part 2

My apologies, this YSH review is dragging on! Thus far we have had drinks served, the “bread course” started and appetizers devoured. Onto the main event!

Emily ordered the Veal Chop, cooked medium-rare. She preferred this to a filet and said that it very tasty! She didn’t eat the sausage so not feedback on that aspect of the meal to offer.

Veal Chop; served with Sausage, onion rings, beets, chard, and lemon-veal jus: $47

Veal Chop - another view:
DSC03125.jpg

Michael went with the cave-man slab of meat – otherwise known as the rib eye. I barely heard a word out of him from the time his plate was set before him until he had devoured this. I was fascinated watching him eat the bone marrow since just the name alone gives me the heebie-jeebies. Apparently, the proper way to eat this is spread on the brioche but what do I know? One note about the translation of how he asked the steak to be prepared (medium rare) and how it was delivered (rare with all red and not warm in the middle); he did not wish to have the steak returned for a minute or two longer on the grill. He will eat rare meat but it was not his preference this night.

16 ounce boneless Rib Eye; bone marrow, sweet onion jam, and red wine butter: $43

DSC03126.jpg

And I’m sure it is no surprise that I ordered the filet – cooked medium rare. It was served with mashed potatoes. The filet was superb and utterly ahh-mazing! So buttery tender and delicious. The cabernet wine sauce was the perfect accompaniment to this filet. I was glad that the filet was served with the mashed potatoes because if they weren’t then I would have requested them. This was my favorite filet of the 3 that I ordered this trip and it completely justified the $41 price tag.

8-oz Center Cut Filet Mignon; mashed potatoes, cabernet wine sauce: $41

DSC03123.jpg

The photo of my filet simply does not do it justice!!

When presented with the dessert menu I regretfully declined as I couldn’t even finish my entrée. Michael likewise passed. However, Em decided to try the Yachtsman sundae.

The Yachtsman Sundae; Trio of gelato with Amarena cherries: $8

Em is a gelato lover so this was the perfect dessert. It was served with fresh whip cream and garnished with a Yachtsman Steakhouse chocolate ribbon and nuts.

Ricardo presented Michael and me with an Anniversary plate of chocolates and candied apricot/passion fruit. Very nice! A small plate of madelines dusted with powdered sugar were delivered with the check. I loved the light, sweet little sponge cakes. A perfect end to a delightful meal.

The bill was $188.85 which included $36.60 in TiW savings.
Before leaving, we asked a member of the service team in the restaurant to please take our family photo. This gal became our personal family photographer because she took no less than a half dozen photos from different angles including standing on a chair so she could capture more of the restaurant behind us. Thank you kind lady and I’m very glad you didn’t fall!

Ricardo handed me his card and said if we wished to dine at YSH again, it would be his pleasure to serve us. He was a lovely man who provided exceptional service – so much so that this was the only meal that we have had in WDW for which I completed a CM feedback form to praise his service. We even had an opportunity to have our photo taken with Ricardo before we left.

Our server, Ricardo and us girls:

To wrap this one up: Although I followed Jaead’s recommendation for ordering the filet, I completely forgot the suggestion to skip the cheese plate or ask for the cheese without the goo.
12) Have the filet and mashed potatoes at YSH, but either skip the cheese plate or ask for it without the jar of “goo”.

One last photo that I should have shown earlier but I took this photo of the meat room on the way out:

Next Up: Breakfast or lunch??

The tomato and burrata appetizer was delicious when we tried it in May! As for the cheese plate, at least 3 out of 5 were enjoyable to you. :goodvibes

Hi there Mr. DDW!! You are quick!! :)

I was glad we ordered the tomato app since it was light and the cheese had such a fresh taste.

As for the cheese plate, I was the only one eating most of the bleu cheese so I didn't have to fight for that but I liked it as well... just not as much as the other two!

I'll be back later to post part 2 of the YSH review.

To funny on the cheeses! I think I would like the opposite ones! I love creamy cheeses far more than firm ones! Not sure about the goo though!!

Happy birthday to Michael! Visiting Disneyland (even if you left out the parks) sounds like a perfect way to celebrate. :thumbsup2

Definitely a happy place to turn another year older - no matter how old you are!!

We actually went into D-land for a little bit but didn't do much since we had just watched Finding Nemo 3D at the theater and eaten dinner so we were a bit sluggish!

Happy Birthday to Captain Michael! Love the pic with Emily and him with the hands on their hips!

Thanks Paula! I like their super hero pose!!

The story behind that birthday button: A CM saw me taking photos of Em and Michael and said he would take one of our family. When I handed the camera over I mentioned it was Michael's bday. The CM had everyone in teh tram waiting area wish Michael or AKA Captain America a Happy Birthday. When we got on the tram the CM brought that button to him. That was so cool and a very nice gesture. :thumbsup2

Although I wasn't a fan of the sheeps milk cheese I think I ate more than anyone! ;) You probably like brie? If so, you should like these soft cheeses.

Ooh great start to your YSH review :)
Isn't that onion bread just delicious!
Oh and by the way, you are you lovely DD look so glamourous :)

Happy Birthday to Michael a bit late! What a great way to spend the day! Love, Love, LOVE the pic of him & Em!

We actually liked the "goo" spread on the bread. We pulled out the cheese and tried to leave as much of the oil aside as we could. Andrew in particular really enjoyed it.

Looking forward to your entrees!

You two clean up real nice! :thumbsup2 But then again, I don't think I've ever seen a pic of you where you didn't look beautiful, Brenda.
You can even pull off the soaking wet look! :lmao:

Oops, you forgot to take my advice about the "Goo" in the jar. But then again, both Vicki & family and DDW's mom really liked it, so I guess this is one of those things that you have to try and decide for yourself. :thumbsup2

Anxious for Part II to see if you took my advice and ordered the filet. ;)

Love this Mother-Daughter pic! :goodvibes

Although I wasn't a fan of the sheeps milk cheese I think I ate more than anyone! ;) You probably like brie? If so, you should like these soft cheeses.

I do like Brie but its a pretty mild cheese to me. My husband knows the cheeses I like and I can tell from looking at a cheese plate which will be my favorites but I NEVER remember the name! :rotfl2: Pretty much I like most anything that is soft, and if it oozes at room temperature thats awesome. I like Parmesan on things but not usually plain as the sharpness of it makes my mouth hurt. The same goes for the really aged cheddars. But pretty much if it is cheese... I'm on it!! (I was not this way before meeting my DH! He has really turned me into a foodie!!)

I just got done typing a long post here and it didn't show up! So I shall summarize. ;)

The onion rolls look good and you have more willpower than I do because I would totally end up eating them all and ruining my appetite! You all look fabulous, cheese looks yummy and happy birthday to Michael!

I also mentioned that Michael can stretch out his birthday weekend by kicking back to watch his favorite team today (hopefully winning this week!).

Finally able to catch up again! And I would like to say that if you ever need to clean out your closet, I will gladly take your old clothes off your hands! You have some of the cutest things! So… either adopt me and take me shopping or send me your handmedowns, please! ::yes::

Looking at the Captain's Grille menu, I want to go there to try the Lobster omelet! That sounded really good! Oh and your plates look like mine. I cannot have too much on my plate for fear of the food touching… ;) Don't anyone even bother to tell me it all mixes in the end. I don't CARE! My food must no touch!

Yatchman's looks amazing as well!!! But, um… I won't bother with that goo either! That is just gross to LOOK at! :scared:

Please, Please, Please wish MICHAEL A VERY HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY!!! from our family. Hope you all had a great day. Can't wait for the rest of your YSH review. :thumbsup2

Happy Happy Birthday to your hubby, Captain Michael! Love the pin lol! :goodvibes
Very nice pics of you and your family from YSH! The onion rolls and garlic look delicious and I have to agree that cheese and goo does not look appetizing!!
Can't wait for the rest of the review!

YES! The onion rolls were just as good as everyone had said!

And thanks for the compliment! :goodvibes

Eww the goo makes an appearance.
Juvenile comments aside, your start to your Yachtsman review looks excellent!

Thanks! Part 1 was good and part 2 coming up...

Happy Birthday to Michael a bit late! What a great way to spend the day! Love, Love, LOVE the pic of him & Em!

Hi Vicki! Birthday greetings have been conveyed to Michael - thanks for that! And thanks for liking the photo of my two hamming it up!

I knew you liked the goo! I actually came in with an open (read blank) mind since I had forgotten Jabead's warning. It just wasn't for me. It just goes to show that others have more complex and advanced tastes than me! :snooty:

You two clean up real nice! :thumbsup2 But then again, I don't think I've ever seen a pic of you where you didn't look beautiful, Brenda.

Thanks Barb! We had several cheese plates and I spaced on your warning about the cheese in oil! Stay tuned to see if the filet makes an appearance...

Paula I do good if I remember if the cheese is a goat, sheep or cow cheese let alone know the names. I had to ask for the cheese plate card or I would have had no clue... I would have had to write my review of this item as mystery cheese #1, mystery cheese #2 and so forth!

Congrats to your DH for expanding the horizons of your taste buds!!! :thumbsup2

Oh darn, sorry you lost your post! I would have eaten more onion rolls but the 2 apps distracted me and then I was really looking forward to my entree.

And you can bet that Michael is watching his team play today!! GO PACK!!!

I'm in! Great reviews so far...can't wait to read the rest and see the pics!

Hi there martinolichfamily!! Thank you so much for reading!

I saw your DL TR and read that and oh my I had to laugh at the grits sub request. My DH loves grits but honestly before I met him I didn't know what they were. Being from CA I don't think you see grits hardly at all. Looks like you liked the Hungry Bear restaurant. It has a great seating area overlooking the Rivers of America. You have an adorable family!!

Finally able to catch up again! And I would like to say that if you ever need to clean out your closet, I will gladly take your old clothes off your hands! You have some of the cutest things! So… either adopt me and take me shopping or send me your handmedowns, please! ::yes::

Christen you are too funny! I'll let you in on a little secret, I buy cheap clothes from Forever21, Ross, and other discount stores. In my PTR I noted this obsession here. ;) But thanks for noticing my cheapo attire!! :lmao:

So do you eat casseroles that have food all thrown together?? :lmao: Actually, I don't mind my food touching but I can completely understand the concept of may I say, an obsessive/compulsive tendency, since I can't stand the couch cushions to be askew or cabinet doors to be ajar or to have books not lined up in the bookcase... you get the idea!:scared: I mean't all the above in a good way... :goodvibes

Please, Please, Please wish MICHAEL A VERY HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY!!! from our family. Hope you all had a great day. Can't wait for the rest of your YSH review. :thumbsup2
Thanks Karla from Michael!! He said oh, she's from the KAMP family. What?? That's how he remembered you guys:
K: Karla
A: Alex
M: Matt
P: Paige

Thanks! 2nd part of YSH coming up!

Happy Happy Birthday to your hubby, Captain Michael! Love the pin lol! :goodvibes

Can't wait for the rest of the review!

Thanks Avasmommy! Thanks for the compliment on the photo. More YSH momentarily.

I just noticed and wanted to comment that Em loves the name Lucy and already wants to name any daughter she has by that name! (Yeah, she's a long way away from that but she mentioned that several years ago!) I just showed her your signature and she smiled.
