Anyone Game? It’s my Sep 2013 Blog! I'm home; with a TR link in #1189, 10/14

Strange as it sounds....I actually like the anticipation of waiting. The holiday goes too quick! :(

I understand completely. I plan our trips so far in advance and then they're over in a blink of an eye.

The tulips are gorgeous! I love the yellow ones with the red stripe.

The flowers are so pretty. I'm jealous of you right now. Although we also has 70 degrees and sunshine, we now have the autumn chill. Which means we're close to winter. And I hate winter. You have the summer to look forward to.

Well....today's max temperature was low 60's. Rain, wind and cold. We're back to winter this weekend.

Let's compare temps again in 3 months....I bet we'll both be wishing that we could change places.

Oooh such pretty photos!

Even though it's only 5 minutes down the road from us, and I drive past all the time, I've actually never been  Looks like I will have to make the effort!

It was beautiful weather yesterday - a perfect spring day :goodvibes Too bad it's gone back to overcast and windy again today...

And cold and wet again today! :headache:

You need to go to Tesselaars!

You need to move well south. We have a weeks worth of temps in the 30's & 40's. the rest is no that bad at all.

I know this was for BeBop...but thanks for checking in this thread.

(Moving south will not make any sense whatsoever from where I sit. I will be moving to Antarctica! :rotfl:)

Such beautiful photos! You have a great eye and those folks on the photography forum have given you some great advice, so much that you could be giving advice! I would love to have the time to stop and smell the roses...er tulips! ;)

Thanks Alison. Those folks on the photography subforum are my teachers....and the best! (When we aren't talking about tripods, brands of cameras, mirrorless vs dSLR etc ;)).

I hope you found some time to smell the roses....er...tulips.

The signs of spring are beautiful and so are your photos...

I am looking forward to the cool weather here but nit on to the winter..

Thanks Brandi.

I'm looking forward to summer....but not to the hot hot weather. :faint:

I'd love to, and my DD25 is already in Louisiana. However, I have at least another 10 years until I can even think about retiring and moving. And DD 24 and DGD3 will be still up here.

Sounds like great place to move to for retirement. Maybe you can convince DD24 to move as well.

Beautiful tulip photos! :thumbsup2

Thanks Heather. Not long to go now for your holiday!

I understand completely. I plan our trips so far in advance and then they're over in a blink of an eye.

The tulips are gorgeous! I love the yellow ones with the red stripe.

Angela - that yellow striped one was one of my favourites as well. Glad you liked the tulips.

Here I am, PrincessinOz, subbing in :thumbsup2

YAY!!!

Another ANZAC subbed in to my PTR. Glad to see you here! :wave2:

 I'm here. Late, but I made it. I can't tell you how much I've enjoyed your amazing pics. The food you served at your DIS meet looked incredible. I found the Gaol quite interesting. I would enjoy taking that tour. Looking forward to more pics and updates. :)

 Thanks for making it over. I really appreciate it, SadieDog.

And you're not late....there's at least a whole year of blogging left to go! :rotfl:

The friend that I went with to the Gaol fessed up on Monday...she was spooked out by the night tour and had nightmares! I felt so bad....maybe you'll make it downunder sometime and you and I can go together! :thumbsup2

The Royal Melbourne Show

September in Melbourne is all about the Aussie Rules Football Grand Final, hayfever, changeable weather… and the Royal Melbourne Show. This annual event brings the country to us city folk and I guess is akin to the State Fairs in the US. It’s been running for a while…the first show was back in 1846.

There were plenty of people around at the Showgrounds and rather than fight with the crowds, I decided that I was going to go see as many of the traditional exhibits as possible.

It’s all about the farm animals…..

From experience, the enclosure for the bovines attracts the least amount of people. It’s the smell.....and the cow pats that you have to dodge when walking through the place!

0927RoyalMelShow081.jpg

The poultry can be popular….there is a growing trend of keeping chooks in the backyard here.

0927RoyalMelShow124.jpg

As a child, we did have chickens in our backyard. My parents liked the silky bantams best.

0927RoyalMelShow120.jpg

I was highly amused by the pom-pom duck.

0927RoyalMelShow126.jpg

Call me traditional, but this is how ducks and geese are meant to look!

0927RoyalMelShow107.jpg

Thanksgiving is not big in Australia…so these turkeys have nothing to worry about.

0927RoyalMelShow130.jpg

0927RoyalMelShow137.jpg

This year was the first year that I’ve seen bees at the Show. I have a mild interest in keeping some bees at home….so I spent some time talking with the bee keeper. I need to mull on it some more to see if I still have the buzz in a year or so.

0927RoyalMelShow111.jpg

Without a doubt, the most popular animal attraction is the farmyard petting barn. Kids galore running wild and the parents very relaxed about it!

Pork can be such a nice tender meat….

0927RoyalMelShow133.jpg

And someday, these Babes might turn up as bacon on a plate somewhere…

0927RoyalMelShow142.jpg

Spring lamb is very tasty…but I’ve never been partial to lamb. Just the fleece!

0927RoyalMelShow151.jpg

I also stopped by the pets area. Completely overrun with people…but these two kiddies caught my eye.

0927RoyalMelShow112.jpg

The Bengal variety is one that DH and I keep talking about getting. It’s getting to the stage where the breeder recognizes us on these yearly visits. Maybe someday…

The Show also attracts entrants from all over to submit their best work.

I always go check out the cake decorations. These were the ones that I was impressed with this year. Keep in mind that these are amateurs…

I also took some time to marvel at the artsy crafty.

Rather fine needlework…

0927RoyalMelShow056.jpg

..and folk art and woodworking.

0927RoyalMelShow057.jpg

0927RoyalMelShow058.jpg

0927RoyalMelShow060.jpg

But I really go to admire the quilting.

This one won first place.

0927RoyalMelShow065.jpg

The material was hand dyed by the entrant using natural dyes…and the stitching seemed like a heap of work!

0927RoyalMelShow063.jpg

I personally thought that this year’s batch of entries were rather good.

0927RoyalMelShow066.jpg

0927RoyalMelShow068.jpg

0927RoyalMelShow070.jpg

I was particularly taken with this quilt.

0927RoyalMelShow071.jpg

Each individual patch was amazingly intricate and detailed!

Some other vignettes from the Show…

Unlike previous years, I didn’t spend a lot of time in the food pavilion this year. With that many people in there, it was hard to see the goods on sale without bumping into another body or without them bumping into you.

However…..

By my standards, a pretty poor food bounty this year!

Hope you enjoyed the Show!

This used to be me!

The only times I've been to a Royal Show I've had a pony in tow or been specifically to watch a friend in a horse riding comp/display. I feel like I've spent enough time there to last me a lifetime :rotfl: I can't stand the crowds!

I also used to prefer the more traditional displays. Obviously the horses... showing, jumping, harness, whatever was going... Aside from that I used to love watching the sheepdog trials and agility. And the cakes are always amazing! I do love a nice decorated cake! And the photography... You should enter next year's PIO :thumbsup2 Oh, and the dairy pavilion for the free samples, although it was ALWAYS packed!

Love your animal pics, especially the cute little kitties! The Bengal is very handsome.

Your pics are stunning! I bet Marilyn would love the quilts, they are gorgeous. Your RMS reminds me a bit of the Big E exhibits, it began as a regional agricultural show and still has a lot of the components that the agricultural community love. I love that aspect of this now pretty commercial event.

I think being spooked is fun. Visiting your part of the world would be a dream come true. Take me to the Gaol and to see the animals and this would be me :cloud9:

I love the pics and your right it looks alot like the US State Fairs. My favorites are the animals and quilts.

I am caught up once again! The tulips are so very pretty. You should be used walking in cow pies by now.:rolleyes1 I love all the animals! We always see different things from you!

That is one beautiful cat! Very nice!

Alison - One of these years, DH and I are going to get us a Bengal. They are a little larger than the average cat variety but the markings are just so distinctive!

Did you win any of the comps?

I've seen pictures of the state fairs and I figure this was equivalent. And yes, I think Marilyn would love the quilts too.

PIO - Love the photos...

Thanks, Brandi.

I'm ALWAYS up for a DisMeet. Just let me know when.

Very nice pictures PiO from the Royal Melbourne Show. :thumbsup2

Thanks Bret.

Thanks for catching up. And yes, I'm pretty good at dodging cow pies! :rotfl:

Folks....for anyone interested.

Turns out that I have a rather unexpected trip to California next month. Backstory and PTR can be found here (or in my siggie below); Quick links are in the second post of the thread.

Hope to see you there.
