I hate having neighbors

....I'm not sure why you are quoting me...I didn't question the price of the 'estimate' or 'bill', or whatever....just asking if there was another way to replace the broken glass.....:confused3

...to be honest, I haven't read through all the posts here and it very well may have been stated, so I don't know if that is what the neighbor actually did.....

The OP has stated that 3 separate windows were damaged and the bill that wa presented to her was for $450.00.

Replacing windows is very expensive, so with such a small bill, it can be reasonably assumed that complete windows were not reinstalled, but that repairs were made.

The correct time for the OP to discuss how resolution would be handled was the initial time they discussed the incident. There was face to face contact then. The OP could have asked the neighbor for pertinent information then. I mean really, the neighbor shows up to say the OPs kids broke her windows, and the OP didn't bother to get at a minimum, a name? WTH?

And I'm sorry, I find it very hard to believe that the OP could never, ever find the neighbor at home at ant time. I personally think leaving notes is a very poor way to handle communication. I have to wonder how hard the OP tried.

I agree. I also don't understand why she needed the neighbor to tell her the address. Couldn't she figure that out when she went to her house?

....my DH is in the construction business and has owned his own business for almost 30 years. He's charged between $100-$150 for a standard egress double-hung vinyl replacement window. I was basing my own assumptions on this prior knowledge, therefore thinking that THAT was what had occured....can you see how we'd have very different perspectives on the prices of windows? :)

[....I'm also thinking that mebbe he should raise his prices, so's I can go to WDW again.....:lmao: :teeth: ;) ]

If that is what he charges, I need my windows replaced!!!!!!! :goodvibes

That's not statistically correct, because the probability of those three possibilities is not equally distributed along the statistical curve. In other words, without evidence to the contrary, we know that OP's sons shoot guns in OP's backyard but we do not have any evidence that any other child has ever done so, so the fact that it could have happened does not allocate it a 33.3% share of the odds. For example, if I list "An alien shot out the window with a laser" that doesn't mean there are now four possibilities, each with a 25% probability.

Nope, that's true. Don't you love how statistics can be manipulated? ;). We could throw in, "The neighbor's nephew was visiting that weekend and shot the windows, but the neighbor noticed the OP's sons have BB guns and either assumed the did it or decided to try to direct the blame on them". ;)

We just had our windows replaced. I had six estimates done including prices from Lowes and Home Depot for just the windows without installation (DH would do the install). Even our smallest window was more than $150 for just the window itself. :confused3

I have been reading this thread and it has been very educational and fun!:goodvibes Here is my take on it for all that is matters-

The OP's kids broke the windows. The windows were not previously broken. The neighbor had them fixed at her convenience as she should since it was not her fault they were broken. The OP IMO should be grateful the neighbor didn't call the police since her windows were shot out and someone in her home could have been hurt and should just pay the bill. The neighbor is under no obligation to get 3 quotes or have the OP's husband install the window. The neighbor who DID NOT have broken windows prior to the kids shooting them out should do what is convenient for her. The end. I personally think the OP got off cheap. I have Anderson windows and the windows themselves cost more than the OP's bil nevermind the installation. I also know people who have vinyl windows (non common name) and they were a lot more than the OP was charged as well.
Bottom line- you break it you bought it. JMHO.

I would love to hear the other side of this story. I think it's funny that OP's sons shot out three of her neighbor's windows and she is the one complaining.

But the homeowner would have to match the other windows in the house. Maybe the rest are not "vinyl replacement windows".

ITA

Those cheap $150 vinyl replacement windows would look like crap on our house. We have tinted, argon gas filled with a high R value windows.

Remember, per a previous poster the windows were not "shot out", instead, holes were made in the windows with bullets.

BB's are not bullets. Don't be ridiculous.

I don't doubt the neighbor was venting and complaining. No one ever said she shouldn't be. Nor did anyone ever say the OP shouldn't punish her sons or take away the bb guns or make them pay for the windows. We just said that no one knows that she didn't, everyone just jumped on the bandwagon.

I find it crazy that so many have said what the OP "should have posted", I didn't realize that there was a rule on how many details we are supposed to give on something we are venting about. :confused3

Nor did the OP say that she wasn't willing to put exactly the same windows back in the house, all she said was that she was hoping to get some estimates. If the woman had went through her homeowners insurance, she would have probably had to get estimates on replacing the exact kind of windows. I just don't see the difference.

Any time I've gone through my insurance company for property damage, they've had their own vendors and arranged to have it repaired. I've never had to get estimates.

We have had insurance that did that and we have had some that required the estimates.

With hurricane damage we had to get estimates, they just mailed us a check for the amount - the deductible. Dh did the work himself.

The woman didn't go through insurance, so what would happen with insurance doesn't matter.

She went straight to the source.

Absolutely. Your issue should be, "Why are my kids so out of control that they think it's OK to aim a BB gun at someone's window?" I'd be furious if I were the neighbor and I'd do exactly as I pleased about the repairs and charge you for it happily.

This. You're lucky she didn't bring the police into the matter for property damage. WTH are your kids doing shooting BB guns in a suburban backyard anyway? BAD IDEA! I grew up with 5 brothers who used BB guns, but definitely NOT in suburbia! Consider this an expensive lesson learned. And I hope you are holding your kids accountable as well.

All she had to do is CALL a couple of other window companies like I did. I gave them the measurements and guess what, they gave me an estimate. It took a total of 15 minutes to call 2 places. It was an accident, not like my kids were going around shooting people's windows. The glass wasn't shattered so it wasn' like she didn't have windows in her house. I offered so pay for it, I was going to set up the companies coming over to INSTALL THEM. I asked for some info to get things started and she ignores me but then can come over to hand me a bill. Would you be pissed, yes you would.

If you were asking me info so that you could arrange companies coming over to install windows at my house, I'd ignore you too.
I would have done exactly what your neighbor did, I'd arrange who I wanted to come over, have them fix it and give you the bill.
So, no I wouldn't be pissed at the neighbor, I'd actually be pissed at your audacity.
