If you threaten to quit your

giggle...giggle...snort...ha..ha-haaaaa...BWAHAHAAAHAAAA!:rotfl2::rotfl::lmao:::rotfl::lmao::laughing:

OMG...thanks for the laugh today, I really needed it....
Ummm, my Co. would replace me and anyone in it if they could get away with paying under minimum wage. I ahve seen my hours go from 50 a week to 12 and anywhere in-between. My other full time job, as caretaker for my mom, now that's another situation entirely. Yes, that would create quite a problem if I threatened to quit~ tho there are times that I know a professional is far better qualified for what she needs, my price is of zero is what we can afford. Not only do I not charge ;), we support her.

job, would they panic ?

nope, I am easily replaceable, they like me, but a replacement wouldn't be to hard to find

They would be totally panicked! It's bad enough if I'm out sick for one day. I am the school nurse so if I ever decide to quit I'll have to give them 4-6weeks AT LEAST, so they can try to get a replacement nurse.

As we school nurses like to say, "Lice~it's job security!"

I'm in upper management. I've been on the boards here long enough to know that people at my level are totally worthless. I'm sure I wouldn't even need to be replaced.

There would be panic at my school, too. I'm an speech language pathologist, and our district is already short at least 1 slp. Once they got me replaced, all would be good, but it would be a mess for a while. Of course, unless I had a really good reason, I couldn't just quit. I have a contract and wouldn't work in the state again if I breached it.

Yea they would panic if I left for no reason. The company has high hopes for me, that I didn't sign up for, so they've been training me like crazy to do everything.Am I replaceable? yes but there will be some hair pulling

I think they would be fine without me, but my boss has told me several times that I am irreplaceable.

This year we did not receive raises. However, someone told my boss that I was applying for another position in the company. He freaked out and gave me a 13% raise to keep me. That was even after I told him that I had not applied and did not intend to apply! I have never had a boss think so highly of me before. It is kind of nice when they appreciate the hard work that you do.

everyone is replaceable

Well, that is the corporate mindset these days, but the reality is if you lose a key person, it can take years to recover.

What I don't get is, with unemployement so high, we aren't getting any qualified candidates. We've had 1 critical positon open for 18 months. And even when we do hire someone, we seem to have about a 50% change of hiring a loser.
We've been through 3 big bosses in the past 18 months. And at the working guy level, we've had a series of good applicants interview, but their "minimum" pay requirements are almost double what the jobs actually pay. The these folks on firm on that number.

My manager would be quite surprised, but as somebody posted earlier, nobody is irreplaceable and while I am senior enough, and generate enough millions of dollars in revenue for my firm to be valuable, that they'd ask why, and likely try to placate my concerns if possible, if I walked out on my job the sun would come up the next day and life would go on for my employer. Fortunately I love what I do and love my employer, so the odds of that happening are virtually zero.

My team knows that if they have concerns about their jobs, want to discuss advancement opportunities, or just want to come in and talk, that my door is always wide open and that I'll work with them however I can. They also know that if they come in and threaten to quit in order to attempt to extract a concession from me, they will be invited to leave the firm immediately. I only have one person on my team who I view as "nearly irreplaceable," due to her skillset, but she is also my most loyal employee and I work very hard to ensure that she, as well as the entire team, knows that I value them.

You sound like an awesome boss! :thumbsup2

I think there would be slight panic. They could find someone to do my job, but no one there would know how to train them as there is no one who knows my job but me.

There is no one else in my company who has a clue how to do about 75% of my job. If I walked out today and quit upper managment wouldn't blink because it wouldn't effect them at all. They wouldn't lift a finger to help my poor co-workers trying to figure it all out. :confused3

Yep this is me! And some things when I leave just won't be done anymore. I've worked places where experienced staff left and things really fell to pot. Nothing was done the same anymore, lots of things fell thru the cracks. And a once well oiled machine that ran smoothly started to get rusty and ran inefficiently.

Given the panic that my boss when into when he found out I was taking a vacation this Summer, I'd say yeah, he would freak out. But, it's a small company - just 14 employees. At 1 time, there were only 4 of us including the owner & his wife. I have the only position in the company that isn't duplicated - 2 of these, 3 of those, 4 of those, 1 of me. And I've been here the longest. The rest of the staff has little interest in what I do - I know more about all their jobs than all of them combined know about mine. Having said all that, would the freak out be enough to get me what I needed to stay if I had a big demand? I don't know.

Now, when I worked for bigger companies, I don't think anyone aside from my immediate supervisors would have so much as batted an eye over me threatening to leave. I think it's different in a small company.

I have been told that if I leave they will just shut down my department. The others in the department have not been willing to learn the different aspects of my job so there is no one to step up to replace me. I have also been told that our department will probably not last more than another 3 years anyway.

I was figured to be important at one job when I turned in my notice and was asked what it would take to get me to stay.

I didn't have another job waiting in the wings so I decided to name my price and ended up with 10 sick paid sick days/3 weeks vacation time, a nice raise and the boss and human resources person quit hassling people when they used their time off to my knowledge. I know I sure didn't hear anyone complain about it again.

I did leave that job for good a year later. That was many years ago though and companies just don't care much anymore.

Geez, that's gotta be good for morale :(

It depends on who you ask...There is someone who can technically do my job, but when I come back from being out my work is either waiting for me to do(because my boss didn't let the other girl do it) or the work she did is in a folder in my email waiting for me to double check it. My boss does not like it when I take time off. But he is very appreciative and lets me know often how much I am needed. (to continue to make him look good)

But I work for a very large company and the company would escort me to the door without thinking twice.

They'd be screwed...hahaha! But seriously, they'd find someone else, not as good as me of course, but someone. My boss lets me know frequently how much he appreciates me. I've trained my workers and the place runs smoothly in my absence. I'm just afraid that my boss is putting feelers out for a new position. That means I'd have to break somebody else in to suite me ;-)

I talked to someone from a job I left 7 years ago. 18 people have had my old job....one I had 16 years......17 fired for not being able to do the job, but the company doesn't seem concerned.

Well, as a teacher if I dropped dead or some such it would be inconvenient for a while... But it's not like there's a shortage of us. Now, DH on the other hand, has a unique skill set in his research field and would be much harder to replace.
