Intro

Hello fellows DISers and welcome to my new TR !!

This trip came as a result of our RCI timeshare. We had points that were going to expire and we had to “use them or lose them” by the end of September 2012. And even though it is almost impossible to find trade points with DVC, I was able to snag a week from September 7-14 at Wilderness Lodge Villas. I made this reservation several months ago and immediately made ADR’s in preparation for the trip.

I bought tickets to the first MNSSHP and made reservations for DH and the kids to have an archery lesson at Fort Wilderness. As we were counting down the days, DH began to get nervous about money, so I suggested downgrading from the DDP to the QSDP to save almost $500. This seemed to appease him somewhat.

About 42 days before our trip, which was 3 days PAST the time I could cancel, I was home alone while DH took the kids tubing on the river. I was coming down the stairs at our house and as I was descending, the dog was at the front window barking at something and my focus shifted from the stairs and onto whatever was causing the dog to spaz out. And I am not sure exactly what happened, but I fell down the remaining stairs injuring my left ankle very badly. I thought for sure it was broken and I was in a great deal of pain – and ALL by myself unable to walk at the bottom of the stairs – with a spastic dog.

I try to find a phone, crawling through the lower floor of our home searching for one. I couldn’t find one and I notice my ankle is swelling and fast. I crawl back to the fridge and grab an ice pack and begin to make my way back upstairs with an exuberant yellow lab crawling all over me thinking it is play time. I knew there was a phone on my bed and I was able to reach it. Since DH was on the river, it took me an hour to get in touch with him. I called a couple of good friends who offered to come help me, but I decided to wait for DH. I finally got him to answer, and he rushed home to get me to the ER. Xrays confirmed it was not broken and I was sent home with instructions to stay off of it for a couple of days and follow up with an orthopedist if it was still bad after a week.

A week passes and I am still unable to walk, so I follow up with an orthopedist as suggested. He takes x-rays and says it is not broken, but a very bad sprain. I begin physical therapy the following week. After 4 weeks, it does not appear to be healing well and an MRI is scheduled. The following day, the news is handed down. Peroneal tendon subluxation that requires surgery to fix. In layman’s terms it is explained here for those of you interested:

One of the worst case scenarios occurs when you sprain your ankle so badly that you have peroneal tendon subluxation. It is fairly rare, so if you are lucky you may not ever experience it. Most people have never even heard of a peroneal tendon. They run on the outside of your ankle and are held in place behind the outer ankle bone. There are two tendons on each foot, and they are held behind the bone with a muscle called the peroneal retinacula. The tendons are there to stabilize your ankle, and (ironically) to prevent sprains

Subluxation is a fancy word, which basically means you have a partial dislocation. In the case of your peroneals, this occurs when the tendons are no longer held in place, and are able to pop up and over the bone. The subluxation is usually caused by a tear in the peroneal retinacula, as a result of a bad sprain. Unfortunately, the only solution likely to cure this problem is surgery.

I didn’t want to schedule surgery BEFORE our trip. I tried to cancel, but was told we would lose all of the money we had paid, plus our points as well. Even with trip insurance, we still would have lost our points, so I scheduled surgery for September 20, which was the Thursday after we got back. At this time, I can only walk a short distance and it is painful to do so, so to solve my mobility problem we rented a scooter for the duration of our trip.

Thus, making me:

Scooter Mom !!

So that is how the name of this trip report came about. I was determined to enjoy my trip and the time with my family because when I got back, I was facing a painful surgery and a 3 month recovery period which required me to be on crutches for that length of time.

SO ……. Let me finally get down to introductions and trip details.

When: September 7-14, 2012

Where: Wilderness Lodge Villas – 1 Bedroom

Who: Me, Scooter Mom extraordinaire – 44 year old Irrigation Designer and lover (aka crazy freak) of all things Disney.

DH – my wonderful husband of almost 15 years. In upper management at a local Chemical Company. He pretends to just tolerate my Disney obsession, but I think he has as much fun as we do.

DS - 13 year old thrill seeker, but still a sweet boy (so far)

DSC02857.jpg

DD - 9 year old sweetie who loves all things Disney. We celebrated her birthday while we were there. She will be 10 this week.

I hope those of you that choose to read along will stop by and say hello. I just love seeing my DIS friends and meeting new ones !!

Are you ready to roll with me ???? :moped: (that is scooter humor – har, har) :rotfl2::lmao:

Let’s go !!

Day 1 – Part One

I had to work on this day and the kids had school, so we didn’t get on the road until 3:00 PM. We had an uneventful drive.

Here’s DH

Not looking too excited yet.

Now this kid is excited. Well .... maybe.

DD showing her excitement as well.

Resulting in the epic fail you see above.

We checked in and although service was friendly, it was REALLY slow. And I was disappointed to discover that my scooter had not been delivered as promised. There was nothing we could do about it until the morning and it took a manager to point out I was on crutches and to offer me a wheelchair. He said we could keep it as long as we would like. I really hoped at that time, that I would only need it until 8 AM the following morning, which was when the scooter place opened up in the morning. We grabbed a few things from the car and headed up to our room.

We had room number 3524

DSC04573.jpg

And I took photos while DH snagged my wheelchair and DS to head down to the car and get some more stuff. I have a handicap parking placard for the next four months and we had hoped this would help us during this trip. But at Wilderness Lodge the parking for the main building and the villas is all in the same place and it is a LONG way to carry stuff. And as much as I urged DH to use bell services, he is stubborn and refused and so we all had to hear him complain about how far it was to carry things, etc. Sigh.
Photos of the room before we made a huge mess.

Our room was basically right around the corner from the elevator. Which is a good thing if you can’t walk very far. But it isn’t a good thing if you are a light sleeper. Because the elevator dings every time the door opens and closes. This begins happening around 5:30 AM and continues pretty much all day and most of the night until midnight. I tried to ignore and not let it bother me, but next time I will definitely ask for another room.

We got everything unpacked and DH got me an ice bag for my aching ankle and we settled in to sleep.

wow just wow
I am definitely in for this trip

Bummer about the ankle but at least you know what is wrong now and will have it fixed for the next trip

ps I do not know if you listen to John Boy and Billy Big show but they have a skit called 'married man' and now i have that tune running thru my head replaced with the words 'scooter mom':rotfl2::rotfl2:

Yep. The ankle thing sucks - BIG TIME !! I dread that surgery with every fiber of my being. And the recovery even more.

I listen to that from time to time, but I am not familiar with that song. I will have to google it and see if I can find it. :goodvibes

DH – my wonderful husband of almost 15 years. In upper management at a local Chemical Company. He pretends to just tolerate my Disney obsession, but I think he has as much fun as we do.

Sadly, he's not a good actor. You can tell he's all about some Disney. ;)

DS looks like he's grown..a lot! Who let that happen?

DH does love Disney. He is always in a good mood when we are there. :lovestruc

He is growing fast !! It turns out, if you feed them, they grow. Who knew ??:confused3 I bet your DD is still taller than he is. Heck my DD is almost as tall.

:cheer2:
Ready for a great ride along with you !!!
popcorn::

Hey Janet !! So glad to have you on board !! Woo hoo !!! :cheer2:

Thanks for the heads up. We just arrived at Disney today and we're gone for two weeks (a week here and then a week in Marco). I probably won't catch up until after we're home.

I'm a little shocked- not a big fan of the themeing in the Villas compared to the main building. Well one less thing for me to be jealous about today. So, where was the frankenboot? I notice you weren't wearing it in your Scooter Mom pic.

I'm sad your scooter wasn't delivered for your arrival. I hope to learn in subsequent posts that situation was rectified toot sweet!

So, I'm still hoping to be able to bring you some food that "freezes beautifully" when you have the surgery. I was planning to destroy my dad's kitchen, but
he is in Mississippi for at least the next two weeks. (My grandma was diagnosed with cancer a couple of weeks ago.) So I may have to load up some pots, pans and utensils and break in my sister's kitchen. LOL!

Hey Kathy !! I didn't expect to see you this soon !! I was expecting you to tune after you got back. I hope you have a fantastic trip and I will look forward to your TR when you get back !!

I don't think pictures do it justice. I will say it isn't my favorite decor, but we really loved our room. It was very comfortable and the pull out was a queen and not a double, so the kids were happy to have more room.

The Frankenboot worked really well in the morning, but as soon as that ankle got to swelling, it hurt REALLY bad to wear it. So, I just decided not to bother with it because at the end of every day, my ankle was as big as a softball. And, you know, pain just isn't my thing.

I was VERY disappointed that the scooter wasn't there and VERY worried about the following day. I didn't want DH to have to push me around the park the next day. You will see in the next post what happens. You know me and you can bet your bottom dollar that I left them a message that night and I called them FIRST thing in the morning.

I would really love to see you even if you only bring me a sandwich. But if Amy needs her kitchen broken in, then I say you are the one to do it !! Make some soup !! That always keeps well. Please do come and see me. I will be so lonely. Two weeks of bed rest in a splint - GAH !!! I have puzzles and books and of course my new laptop to keep me busy. But still .....

I am so sorry to hear about your Grandma. I'm praying for her !! That makes my diagnosis seem so trivial. You know ?? I hope it isn't too serious and that she will be OK.

subbing in - thanks for the tip! Be back later to read every detail! Love your TR's!:woohoo:

Hi there :goodvibes So sorry about you ankle!! Looking forward to another fabulous trip report. The villa looks awesome. I bet that Jacuzzi comes in handy after a long day at the parks. Just curious, how long does it take you to drive from SC? -Amanda

Hello!

Oh man, I'm sorry that you were scooter-laden for this visit to the World.

Thanks for the many pictures of your Wilderness Lodge villa...I don't think I've seen them so well-documented before.

:welcome: Hey Amanda !! Thanks for checking in !! I have a jacuzzi at home that I haven't been able to use because it is very hard to get in and out of the tub with one leg. :rotfl: DD enjoyed some some time in the tub though !!

It takes us about 6.5 to 7.5 hours depending upon traffic patterns. So, not a bad drive for us at all.

Yep, the ankle thing has really sucked for sure.

It is hard to find a lot of pictures of the villas at WL. I should go over to their thread and post these, I guess. Someone else might like to see them, maybe.

Day 2 – Part One

We kinda slept in a little this morning. We decided to take it easy on this morning because we didn’t know what the scooter situation would be and DH wanted to watch his football game which started at noon. So we planned to just chill on this day and kind of go with the flow.

Of course, I called the scooter people right away. And they let me know how sorry they were and that they would credit a day for me and that my scooter was already downstairs waiting for me. YAY !!! So DH took the wheelchair back and went to get the scooter for me.

While he was gone, I took photos of our view off of the balcony.

DSC04202.jpg

We spent very little time out there, so it wasn’t a big deal. But perhaps, if we had a better view, we would have spent more time out there.

Anyway, DH arrived back with the scooter !! YAY !!!

DSC04203.jpg

(angels singing)

I just loved it !!

DSC04204.jpg

Isn’t it funny how you think if you lean forward, it will make you go faster ?? LOL. Anyway, having the scooter on this trip was a complete lifesaver. It was seriously so fun scootering around everywhere. I had the best time with it. It sure beat hauling myself around all day on crutches or having to listen to DH complain about having to push me everywhere in the wheelchair. Because, I’ll be honest, that wouldn’t be any fun for him at all and I am not exactly a lightweight.

So DH gets the scooter back and plays with it. Drives it up and down the hallway, takes it apart, puts it back together. You know, guy stuff.

We all got dressed and went to check out the resort.

(check out the little girl getting ready to jump into her daddy's arms in the last picture--so cute:cutie:)

Aren't men different, they have to "check things out" to 'make sure they are ok"
But i am sure he had fun doing so--you sure look like you were (having fun that is) in spite of the injury

I did notice that little girl. So precious !! My DD just loved the slide at that pool.

The scooter really WAS fun, although there were some challenges that came along with that. Mostly other people. They look in your direction and you think they see you, but they don't. They just keep on walking right into you. and little kids were always darting out in front of me. I never hit anyone, but I sure came close. Thankfully it wasn't crowded at all when we were there. I can see where that would be a REAL challenge.

The villas lobby is gorgeous! Did it have that great smoky smell going on? LOVE the train. If we ever stay over at WL again, we'll have to make a point to go over and see that at the villas. That bubbly pool sounds wonderful. What a cool feature. My DD loves the water slide at the main pool too. After our last trip I if CSR had the best slide of all the resorts we've stayed in. She said she liked WL's better. I was surprised b/c that CSR slide looked pretty darn cool, and I don't remember the WL one being all that special. Clearly I missed out on something.

Glad the scooter company was apologetic and their mistake did not hold you up in the morning. Considering everything, would you recommend the company? If my mom
