Disney pins and flying

WE have never flown before. Can my dd wear her Disney pins or should we put it in our checked luggage?

We checked the pins on the way home (3 kids and 3 lanyards). I wrapped them in a separate bag inside the luggage.

They came home fine

We put ours in our checked luggage - put underneith clothing and such and they came home safe and sound. Cant say the same for our luggage
We saw quite a few kids on the plane with them around their necks though and no one seemed to bother.

Definitely keep your pins in your carryon. You do not want to chance those in your checked luggage. There is absolutely no problem taking them through security. Just make sure your DD doesn't try to wear her lanyard through the metal detectors. Either have the lanyard in your carryon or put it in one of the bins that goes through the x-ray machine.

No. The TSA has no issues with the pins. And they should NOT be put into checked luggage. There is too big a chance of your luggage getting lost or having them stolen out of your checked bag.

Interesting.... My daughter who was 6 during our last flight, had a little guardian angel on her shirt. The angle is an inch and a half and has the same push pin on the back that most of the trading pins have. Not only did they tell us to take it off BUT they also told us we could not put it into our carry on luggage. Thankfully in LGA security opens to the front of the airport and my mom who dropped us off was still there, and I handed it to her. Or they would have made me leave it with them.

SO I will say again, I would put them in your luggage. My daughter was stopped for 1 pin. I dont know the rules as I dont work for the airlines or the TSA, but I know from personal experience.

I don't understand this paranoia at all. I do understand the legitimate concern that there might be trouble trying to take pins on as carry-ons. I don't doubt the PP's story about not being allowed to take a pin. I would definitely check them just in case. The chances of them being refused as a carry-on are very small, but the chances of them being lost in checked baggage are infinitesimally small.

I doubt thieves are specifically looking in luggage for Disney pins, but they will steal anything that might have value. And Disney pin collections can become quite pricey very quickly, especially if you collect some of the limited edition pins. Anything they could unload on ebay for money is a target for thieves. So if an unscrupulous baggage handler opens your bags and sees a pin collection worth hundreds of dollars, you bet they'd snag it.

As for the PP who said their DD was stopped for one pin, I'd say you ran into an overzealous TSA agent. If the post on a pin is an issue, then I'd imagine they'd make everyone remove earrings and tie tacks. We've carried DD's lanyard full of pins through security on at least 3 trips and never even had a comment on it. I know lots of posters here on the Disboards always carry their pins in their carry-ons and your post is the first time I've ever heard of an issue. If a TSA agent raises an issue about pins, ask for a supervisor because the regulations in no way prohibit them to be carried through security. In fact, scissors with blades of 4 inches or less are explicitly permitted according to the TSA website. So if small scissors are permitted, no way are pins prohibited.

Never ever put your pins into your checked bags! They are an easy target for less than honest people to grab and sell on E-Bay. You should never put anything you value and that cannot be easily replaced into a checked bag!!! I'm sorry but telling people to put them into checked luggage is NOT good!

I've brought my pins thru security many times and never been questioned. I just put them in a big plastic bag, so that security can look at them if they choose to. Plus it keeps the pins from falling off and getting lost in the bottom of the tote.

We fly with trading pins all the time, Disney traders 2 or 3x a year and Skating team traders about 6 competitions a year. Never ever has it been an issue to carry them on.

Personally I would never put anything of any value in my checked bags as so many people have access to them. My bags are opened by the TSA almost every time we fly. I pack nothing but clothing, follow the "suggested method for packing" and use zip locks so I don't thinik there is any real reason for it.

I agree with not putting pins in checked luggage. My friend had a brand new pair of jeans stolen our of her luggage last year (albeit, expensive jeans). All 3 of my kids trade pins and have a pretty extensive collection. I don't let them bring all their pins, but they usually bring 15 or so each on their lanyards. We always put them in our carryon and have never had any trouble getting past security. We've been doing that for the last 4 - 5 trips, including one trip across the country to Disneyland.

You know, you can easily look up the rules yourself at TSA.org. The pin was fine, TSA was wrong, and you should have requested to speak to a supervisor.

It really is up to you. We have flown with our pins in our carryon bags before with no issue. We have also checked them and there has never been a problem.

We were coming back from a funeral and had a bust of Abraham Lincon in our carry on. Security saw it on the screen and then took it out and did a bunch of testing on it.

I agree - it was solid and heavy. For all they knew it may blow up!!!
