Unusual spelling of names?

I know we're in the age where people spell their children's names all different now. But I think I came across the oddest one yet.

I drive a school bus (so all you teachers will agree with me, I'm sure) and I get many students each year that will have a seemingly "normal" name but with an off the wall way of spelling it. Heck, my sister named her son Devvon. Why the extra "V" is beyond me, but hey, it's not my kid. Anyhow, today a boy comes on my bus with a pass and it's says....Beihle. I could NOT for the life of me figure out what his name was. Finally broke down and asked him. His name is Bailey!!!

What about you? Do you know anyone who has an unusual spelling of their name?

I too am so tired of all the "unique" spellings. I just don't find it cute anymore. I know someone named Rayan (Ryan), He's a boy. For some reason I'd be more accepting of it if it was a girl. Too me that is Ray-ann not Ryan.

Oh lord, I see this all the time. I was doing hearing and vision testing with our 5th graders all week. I'm pretty good at ferreting out these weird names, but one tripped me up on Tuesday. The girl's name was pronounced "Jada". So I wrote down "Jada". She curled her lip and got real snippy with me--"my NAAA-AAME is spelled J-H-A-Y-D-'-A-H. How come y'all always get that wrong" <insert plenty of adolescent superiority and eye rolling>

I told her she was rude and if it bothered her that people spell her name wrong she probably needs to speak up and spell it for them. what I WANTED to say was "Your parents are idiots. Take it up with them."

I once had a student named Jarqutavious, pronounced Jar-quay-vee-us.

I mean, I spelled my daughter's name Carsyn, but I don't think it's THAT far out there.

Luckily, the only people I know with "unusual" spellings are legitimate alternates, language-based ones, like 'Sofia.'

I just don't, with that kind of thing. If you want to write your name as Rahaychel'le, go nuts, but I can spell Rachel.

I don't understand the appeal - it does not make your child seem unique, it makes the lot of you seem illiterate. Beihle?

I know someone who has a little girl, Genevieve. The girl was demonstrating that she can spell her own name - then asked why it didn't have a 'y' in it. Because your parents can spell, dear.

DD had a Donqutavious in her Pre-K class. I always felt so sorry for him when they were learning to print their names!

I think it's a generational thing. The Hippies named their kids Rainbow and Sunshine and those kids grew up and rebelled by naming their kids Jennifer and Michael. That generation grew up and started naming their kids names like the ones posted in this thread. Just wait another 10-15 years and I'm sure it will go the other way.

My DS' gf … while they are not young … 25yo … her name is KAITLIN.

Do you know that you cannot find anything with Kaitlin spelled that way … like little trinkets, key chains etc … every one spells it with a Y = KAITLYN.

DS ordered her bday cake (July) and even though he was very clear on the spelling … bakery still spelled it wrong.


AS FAR AS THE WAY THOSE PARENTS SPELLED BAILEY … SHEESH.

Yes, some people give their children what I refer to as "mis-spelled" names but I'll get down to brass tacks here & say I know for a fact that human resource managers weed out the "bad ones" as they look through resumes/job applications. They include but are not limited to: Britnee, Taeler, Shanighya, Kloey, Psymon, Kristofer. Thoser parents should be arrested for child abuse.

Well, I'll admit that one of my children's name is Christofer. But I don't think that's too bad, and he loves that it's spelled that way.

DD is named SARAH. Not unusual but as a child when she was asked her name, her response was "Sarah with an H."

I have a very common name but it's spelled differently. I don't want to put my first name or how it's spelled on here. I am named after my fathers cousin and my mom took the spelling of her name as well. There were 3 of us in my graduating class with the same first name and we all spelled it differently which I liked.

A few years ago, I was in a kindergarten classroom for orientation when I overheard the teacher approach Lil' Mikey's parents.


Teacher: On your way out, you need to stop by the office and have them correct the spelling of Michael's first name.

Father: It is correct.

Teacher: No, it's not correct, they have it spelled Micheal, and that typo appears on all his official paperwork.

Father: It's correct, that's how we spell it. My name is Michael, and when I was born, my mother didn't know how to spell and she got the A & E mixed up. We wanted to name our son after me, so we spelled it incorrectly, too.

Teacher: *speechless*

The funny thing is, her parents owned a local Italian restaurant named...
Michael's.

My DD's middle name is Mari' (Marie) it is her 83 year old grandmothers name.

Ok maybe not strange spelling but here is a real childs name....Tequlia Braizzere! Yes that was her first and middle names! Also a set of boy twins...Albino and Albino.....no difference in spelling just pronunciation. One was a long "i" sound and the other was a short "i" sound!!!!
