We are about to commence a couple of months of mess and chaos as we embark upon the building of our house extension ( actually we have a building company doing the building work and we have done some of the preparation and will be doing all the finishing off bits at the end ...fitting out the kichen etc)

To keep a record of this momentous time in our lives I decided in my wisdom to keep a blog of the improvements so we would have some record of the project. Now that things are about to get exciting ( really ) I am going to share our experiences with our DIS friends.

Something to look at if you are planning something similar or if you are really really bored ....

going through a bit of building work ourselves too. Given up on even trying to dust anymore. As soon as I do it there is another film of it waiting to land..

will be well worth it,i did my own extension.Work in the building trade took me nigh on 2 years to do,nights and weekend
Hard slog as running sites at work at same time.
Always take photos during the building work especially the boring stuff like drainage ect.
Have you a copy of your building regs drawing to check everything being done to the letter.
Remember there working for you and have to answer to you, phase payments and check quality of work before paying.hold a retension to pay 6 weeks after completion in-case faults turn up (it happens)

Thanks for the advice Paul. I will certainly take lots of photos and we are doing phased payments. We have seen a lot of the building company's work and it has been good ..plus we phoned up people who they had done work for to see if they were happy ...and that reassured us a lot. They seem really nice chaps too ( but then again don't they all LOL )

Building work is scheduled to start tomorrow …. I anticipate 2 months of total insanity and mess …. oh well … no going back now !! I need to embrace this and shout “Bring it on !! ” In the meantime … on with the de-cluttering : )

I've just been through a total house renovation, so I feel for you. It's a very stressful and dusty time! Mine still isn't totally complete, even though I was promised it would be done within 12 weeks, and we're on week 22 now! Let's hope your builders are more speedy than mine!

just read your blog,planning permission is mainly only for the external structure.As long as you follow building regulations you can do whan you want inside.We had plans passed for 3 extra rooms but ended up with one room 70 metres squared and got signed off fully.

I remember when we had our garage converted, with the blockwork in place it looked tiny. It was only when it was plastered, it looked massive.
perhaps try and measure out the room in your lounge or another room, use furniture for fake walls and see if the space fits.
Its only a bedroom,you dont want to make it too comfortable so your children never leave

Looks like theyre going fast.
Although I always remember the building rule of ......
it takes 10% of the time, to do 90% of the work and 90% of the time, to do 10% of the work.
After all the brickwork and plastering gets done so quick, its annoying when the last little bits seem to take ages.
