Torn between Poly and POR

Right now we're booked in a POR royal room with free dining.

Normally, I'd be very happy with this. We typically stay moderate and have young children who don't sleep in and, in addition don't nap or handle sleep deprivation well. Accordingly, on previous stays, we've never stayed late enough in the parks to watch the evening shows.

This trip, however, is a very special one with extended family, and everyone (including us) wants to watch Wishes and Illuminations. But I don't want to be dragging super tired kids onto packed buses well past their bedtimes (and then have to suffer through cranky/fussy behavior for days to follow).

The Poly appeals to us, in part, because we'll be renting a double stroller and, in the event the kids fall asleep in it while we're in a park late, we can simply roll them back to our room in the stroller without having to wake them up.

I also love the idea of taking the Monorail back to the resort (for a mid-afternoon break) instead of waiting for busses.

But then I keep reading reports about the rooms at the Poly being dark, dank, and musty (as well as just generally worn around the edges). In contrast, the rooms at POR have been newly refurbished (I realize the POR rooms are smaller, but we've never had a problem with the size of moderate rooms).

We can afford the Poly and value its convenience (as explained above) but, given the huge difference in price compared to POR, I know I'd have major buyer's remorse if the rooms aren't any nicer (or, perhaps, not even as nice) than the newly refurbised rooms at POR.

(And if you're wondering how we'd ever know the diffierence, some of our extended family is staying at POR and we'll likely visit the resort on our non-park day, as we plan to take the boat there after visiting DTD).

So, to switch to Poly, I need to be convinced that the difference in price versus POR is buying us more than simply location (as important as location is).

You are singing my song from last summer - exact resorts too!!! We LOVE YC Club Level. Absolute favorite resort but wanted to do a split stay to try something new. I was so geared up for the Poly until I read report after report saying rooms were in disrepair, etc. and those that did love it loved it for old times sake etc. and some were just willing to look past the rooms for the convenience of the Poly. I am not one of those people. I feel I would have been disappointed. I had even a few people PM me thru Dis saying they had just returned and were really disappointed etc.

So long story short I stayed at the POR. Now we are comparing apples to oranges of course. Rooms were LOVELY. I normally stay Deluxe so it was a bit of change for me - we enjoyed it but we all agreed (3 of us) we are more deluxe people in the end.

We always always rent a car. I never take a bus to the parks. Would you consider this? Would help in the getting out of parks easier. You can always watch wishes from the Poly beach and then just drive to Por etc.

It is a hard call. I so prefer the Epcot resorts but at a young age I am sure your kids are MK bound a lot. If room decor is important to you and sounds like it is, I would pass on the poly......

The funny thing is, when I look at pictures and videos of the standard Poly rooms online, they look beautiful to me.

Of course, the new POR rooms look nice too.

But pictures and videos don't often tell the whole story. A couple of years ago we were house hunting. One of the sellers had an on-line video of their home, which looked lovely from the video. But when we finally saw the place with our own eyes, it was a huge disappointment.

At least then we could simply go on to the next house (thank goodness we didn't make an offer on it based on the video alone).

But in this case, I don't want to walk into our room and be immediately disappointed (especially if the room smells musty/mildewy, which DW and I are extremely sensitive to).

I'm not expecting the Four Seasons (despite paying a Four Seasons-esque price). I just want a nice, clean, well-appointed room that doesn't smell musty.

When I look at pics I like what I see too! But if you look at Disney pics at YC - they still had the room pics from 2008 before the refurb!!!!!! So I don't think these pics are exactly updated. However Mousemommy brings new info to the table with talk of refurb club rooms. YES I would do that sure!!!!!!!!!

We're going in December (before the CL refurb will have started).

It's possible that the refurbed rooms will be done in Aotearoa by then (Tikiman thinks they'll start working on this longhouse in October).

Honestly, the the current Poly rooms look very attractive in pictures (and videos). I just wish I had some way of knowing if the rooms are as nice in person as they are in pictures.

The feeling I get is that Poly rooms are a bit of a crap shoot. Some rooms are more worn than others. Some smell musty, some don't.

I suppose if I don't like the room we're originally assigned, I could request another. But I'd prefer to avoid that hassle.

Moreover, it bothers me that, for the kind of money they're charging, the resort has so much variability in room quality. I realize the resort is old, but didn't they redo all the rooms in like 2007, followed up by a touch-up in 2010. Why so much inconsistancy?

What are the ages of your kids? If you have 2 in a stroller I think I'd keep POR with Free Dining and wait and see if a room discount comes out for the Poly. FD for 2 adults isn't worth paying rack rate at the Poly in December

What about the Wilderness Lodge? You at least have the boat to MK and it's cheaper than the Poly and beautiful at Christmas

We stayed at the Poly back in January. There was NOTHING wrong with the room. no wear or tear. The rooms are "dark" because of the dark wood and theme. I didnt think it was any darker than the room we had at the AK last weekend. Poly is a great resort. If thye money differece is not an issue, i would definately choose the poly.

One of our kids is under 9 and the other under 3.

We're going in early/mid-Dec so we'd be paying fall rates (and not the peak holiday season rates). But, of course, even those are $$$.

Accordingly, I'm waiting to see if a room discount will beat free dining because, I agree, that for our party, free dining is not quite enough of an incentive to pay rack rate at a deluxe (even at off-peak rates).

I've thought about the WL but have heard that the boat crowds after Wishes can be as bad (or worse) than the buses. So I'm not convinced it provides a significant convenience advantage vis a vis POR (and we'll, in any event, see the WL decorations as we have an ADR at Artist Point).

The Poly was one resort we were dying to stay at and when I finally booked it, I started reading a lot of negatives reviews and started second guessing our decision. We stuck with it and it was one of the best trips we ever had!!!! We had a great room and although they were just refurbed (our stay was in Sept 2007), there were still a lot of bad reviews at that time. I understand your hesitation about spending the money and getting a room that is musty smelling, old, etc., but one consolation is you can move to a different resort if things are that bad. I know that's not the most ideal way to start a vacation, but you wouldn't be stuck at the Poly if you really hated it that much. There are probably more negative reviews on every resort than there are positives ones as people tend to post about a bad stay more than a good one. I just read one the other day on the BC with the person saying it was horrible and they will never stay there again. Only you can decide whether or not to make the change, but you also won't know if the Poly is for you until you try it for yourself. If the extra cost is doable and you really want to stay there, I say give it a try as it is very convenient being on the monorail with little ones and the beach is a great place to watch the fireworks with a short walk back to your room afterwards. With that said, regardless of whether or not you change resorts, I'm sure you'll have a great trip. Good luck.

We've been fortunate to stay at both - POR twice, Poly once. My vote is stay with POR. Although the Poly has the monorail (and that is a huge plus especially for nap time), and the rooms are larger, it wouldn't sway me enough to stay there, unless I got a really great rate.

IMO, POR with the lush walkways, the quiet pools, the river walk to POFQ, the boat to DTD, the bike rentals, the fishing option, and a pretty decent food court (and Yee Haw Bob) make it more appealing. I just feel its more kid friendly than the Poly, but that's just my thought.

If you're really concerned about the quality of the room, I agree with scottmel and wait to stay at the Poly until the rooms are refurbished. Either way, have a great time!

We have stayed at the poly a few times, but it has been years. If we could afford it I would stay here every time. The rooms have always been fine when we went. The feel of the resort is great. The location is superb. I hope that one day we can find a good enough deal to make it back, unfortunately with the four season prices I doubt it!

LOL, so true.

Our first time staying moderate, we stayed at CSR. I was really excited about it until I started reading a lot of reviews, at least a third of which were really negative (how it was grossly overpriced, wasn't worth the difference in price versus a value, etc.). So I worried that we were throwing money away.

In the end, we stuck with our plans and were glad we did. The resort totally exceeded our expectations. This led me to conclude that the negative CSR reviews were simply isolated events and not reflective of the resort's true quality.

Now we're considering taking it up a notch (so to speak). Honestly, I'd probably be willing to discount a lot of the bad Poly reviews as isolated, negative experiences but for the fact that the Poly is a relatively old resort. When you consider that, in combination with reviews that say things like "run down", "musty", "dank", "moldy", etc., it really leads you to wonder.

Don't get me wrong. I totally love the Poly's kitschy, Brady Bunch goes to Hawaii feel and, in that regard, have absolutely no problem with the resort's themeing being stuck a bit in the 1970's. And I'm truly not expecting the Four Seasons. But if I'm going to pay more than double the price of a mod, the room had better be at least as nice, if not nicer, than any mod room on property (and not simply bigger). Otherwise, for me, there's no avoiding a feeling of buyer's remorse.

I LOVE the Poly, we stayed there in March and our room was lovely - no smell at all, perfectly clean, nothing to complain about.

However, if you're basing your decision a lot on the monorail, you might want to re-think. My opinion is that the monorail isn't what it used to be. When we were there in March the monorail was completely shut down for a few of the days (which we were prepared for) but then once it opened up it had frequent patches of being out of service. The guys on the platform said that it happens often and they never know how long it will be down.

Just last week I was in Orlando for a conference, and had a free afternoon so I decided to tour some of the resorts. I did the monorail "loop" a couple of times, and there were delays between every stop. As in, the mono would stop on the track and we just waited for "traffic" for a few minutes. I also rode the buses several times that day, and never had much of a wait at all.

So, I guess to sum up, the monorail may not be worth the HUGE mark-up. Just my opinion.
