im starting to think about planning at 2013 trip... probably for sept. Just wondering what type of discount will probably give us the biggest discount. I was thinking about using the free dinning if offered, but someone on another post suggested that might not be the best discount for my family. our kids will be 2 and 4 at the time of the trip. I also have aaa and saw they offer discounts too. Oh and we want to stay at one of the deluxe resorts... maybe BC or WL.

Thanks!

Room discount is better at deluxe level; free dining is only good if you can all get it - especially at the mod level when you get the DDP. Even going with the value and QSDP, if you want to upgrade to DDP, you are better off at a mod.

Your children are too young to get free dining; you are better off with the room discount.

Room discount is only better at the deluxe level depending on how many people and the ages of the kids. Agreed that with kids that young, room discount is the way to go. For our family, staying at a deluxe with free dining is a much better deal than a room discount. Maybe back when the deluxe discount was 40%, that was a better deal. I know when I copared the 30% discount at YC to free dining, free dining saved us several hundred more.

How old do kids have to be to get the free dining? When we head to Disney our kids will be 4 and 5. Thanks!

3 and older for dining. 2 and under share off parent's plate.

I think though with only having to pay for 3 people one being a child that you are better with a room discount if the discount is great enough

I argue that room discounts are always better than the DDP. It's not apples to apples. I doubt very seriously that people are getting desserts at each meal, particularly at QSRs. And what's the big debate? What do with all the leftover snack credits at the end of the trip (which are already paid for).. So take the room discount and pay for dining OOP.

I totally agree. We are a family of 4 (all adults) and always stay deluxe. Depending on the time of year, resort, room type, etc., sometimes free dining comes out to be the better deal over a room discount for us (even when the discounts were 40%). It is not cut and dry as to which is the better discount since it is dependent on more than one factor.

OP.....in your situation, a room discount would probably be the most beneficial at a deluxe given the ages of your kids.

In my case, it is apples to apples because we get the dining plan whether we are paying for it or not. For us, free dining makes and paying rack rate for the room is clearly cheaper than a room discount and paying full price for the dining plan. 2 of my 3 kids are at Disney adult pricing so it adds up fast for us paying for 4 adults and 1 child.
