***OFFICIAL Grand Floridian Construction Thread (new info!)***

We will be going in late August. My primary concern is the impact on the monorails. Any thoughts, insight, etc. on monorail availabilty at that time?

I do believe this is new info. They were discussing this on the GF thread as well. One thing we noticed is that there was no construction done on the weekend. At least there wasn't when we were there.

Here are some pictures from our recent visit. Just returned home 7/2/12.

Thanks. What an eyesore, IMO. Was there any impact on your trip as a result (besides the view)?

And would it be any better if we stayed at the Poly? W are going next month.

We didn't stay at the GF. We were originally supposed to but changed to BLT due to the construction. After visiting the first time which was Wednesday 6/27, me and DH said that we should have stayed there. But then again it would have only been for two nights. Would we have wanted to stay if it were more than two nights, not sure on that one. The only time that we really heard anything was when we walked over to the beach pool. But then again, that was a very short time. We didn't hear anything once we left that area. We sat inside, right by the stairs next to the door leading out to the beach pool and heard nothing either. We visited again on Sunday, 7/1 and there was silence. No construction going on whatsoever. It's hard to say whether you should stay at the GF or move to the Poly. I wish I could help you out.

Thanks. Hope your trip was good. Looks like we will just stay at GF.

Thank you so much for your info. I am torn right now. I am booked for two weeks in Sugar Loaf during the last half of October. I really don't know if I should switch to another monorail resort or stay put at my favourite of all resorts, the GF. Any idea what you would do???

Thanks for any input you may have.

I recently returned from an awesome vacation the Grand Floridian and it was amazing. The hotel is so luxurious and nice; by far the best Disney Resort Hotel I have stayed at!

The construction was simply an eyesore and wasn't too obtrusive. Occasionally, we could hear it from our room and we were in Conch Key. The Beach Pool is surrounded by construction walls, so we nicknamed it the "Construction Wall Pool" and the walk to the Polynesian is bordered with construction walls.

Apparently, this is part of a resort renovation that will involve closures of all of the hotel's restaurants and main pool (which will be completely redone). All of this is expected to be done by December 2012. I am writing up some updates on the construction for my blog (disneyparksplanning.com) and will post a link, soon!

Thanks for the encouraging words andyman8, and I'm glad you had an awesome time but I'm wondering if the work being done on the courtyard pool and Gasp will be a little more obtrusive come this fall? I love the walk through the courtyard and I'm thinking that by October it might include a lot of jackhammering and cement dust??? I'm wondering if maybe this year might be the year to try another resort??? But then I absolutely love the GF....ugh, decisions, decisions :confused3

The GF is our favorite resort and Me, DH and DS were supposed to stay at the GF 6/25 & 6/26 before heading to BLT. We switched to the YC because we have stayed at that GF many times before and we felt the construction would be intrusive. After visiting the GF on 6/27 DH and I looked at each and said we should have stayed here. We didn't find the construction as bad as we thought it would be.

Now, with that being said, with all of the future construction on the courtyard pool as well as Gaspi's, JMPO but we would not stay at the GF if that were the case.

One of our favorite parts about the GF is the serenity that you feel when you are in the courtyard. There is just something about the courtyard that I can't describe but there is such an overwhelming feeling we get just walking through to catch the boat to MK or just strolling around the grounds.

andyman8 So glad you had an awesome time at the GF.

bdklein Have a great trip.:flower3:

Hey everybody,

My family and I are in the midst of planning a trip to Disney this coming Feb 2013. I am just wondering if anyone has an opinion about the status of the construction then. I know that it SAYS the main pool will be completed in December, does anyone know how well disney stays on track with construction (as most places don't). and If all these things are opened by December does that mean the pool with the slide will then be closed for refurbishment come January. 2 years ago we stayed at the Poly and the day we got there they closed the second pool for refurbishment, and my entire crew were disappointed. I would hate to have that happen again as I fear that might turn my Dad off disney. So if anyone could help me (because my parents are booking next week) so that if there will be construction we can choose another resort (how ever we would much rather be in the Grand). Any help is good help. Thanks so much guys! Also I will be there for the marathon (as a runner) and for 7 days after.

Thanks a million!!!!!!!

We have been planning our trip to Disney for over 2 years. My parents scrimped and saved to take our whole family on the vacation of a lifetime - then we got "the letter". My Dad just talked to the guy that sent the letter. There is going to be more construction than indicated on the letter. Any building around there will have a construction wall view, plus they are re-furbishing rooms in the buildings so we could have noise from inside as well as outside. As far as the lagoon view that will be blocked also by construction at the beach. He suggested that we move to the polynesian. I am so disappointed it isn't even funny.

Sorry to hear it. When is your trip??

Yes, please post the letter. We are going at the end of August and I was hoping that the construction would still be minimal at that time. DH thinks that once they start- they move quickly:scared1:--let's hope not. I know he would not be happy with a lot of noise. I'm also surprised that the Disney website does not have any info on construction except for the Spa, I'm sure there are people booking their vacations at rack rate or a small discount not knowing anything about the construction.

Here's a copy of the letter. We are slated to go with my parents the second week in September. We will be staying RPC TPV and I really don't know what to do. I wanted my parents to have a super magical trip and they wanted to stay at a monorail resort, so they wouldn't have to walk as much.

July 2012

Disney's Grand Floridian Resort and Spa Guest,

We are delighted you chose the Walt Disney World Resort as your vacation destination.

In an ongoing effort to improve the quality of our facilities and offerings, please pardon our appearance during your upcoming visit. While the following locations are being refurbished for your future enjoyment, we have arranged for alternate options in order to ensure that you have a truly grand experience.

Our Courtyard Pool will be undergoing some exciting changes, including a new zero- entry slope, and is scheduled to reopen late December of this year. The Beach Pool and slide will remain open for your relaxation and enjoyment.

We are pleased to announce that beginning in late August, the newly enhanced Beach Pool Bar will debut with a grill and extended quick-service offerings. Soon after, Gasparilla Grill and Games, our quick service restaurant and arcade, will be renovated to include additional seating. During this time, we invite you to enjoy the extended menu at the Beach Pool Bar, a selection of pre-packaged food at Mizner's Lounge and our many Table Service restaurants.

Finally, as you may already be aware, the spa is currently closed with an anticipated reopening later this year. The Fitness Center remains open for your use. In addition, in-room massage service is available. For full-service spa amenities, we offer complimentary transport to The Spa at Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort. Please call 407-824-2332 for more information on services, pricing, and to book an appointment.

Thank you and we look forward to your upcoming stay. If you have questions regarding your reservation, please contact your original booking agent listed on your confirmation.

Sincerely,
Norm Noble
