Official Disneyland ½ Marathon & 5k

This race was the reason that I started running. Without it I would probably be 300 pounds and sitting on the couch. instead I am trying to decide what shoes I am going to wear and if I should wear the bright volt compression socks with the bright volt shoes or should I save them for the Goofy in January. :)

Love to see all the NorCal and Pac Northwest Dis'ers on here. So far so good up here in Beaverton. The weather is amazing (even the rain), do NOT miss the LA traffic ( I now walk to work), and everything is just so green and fresh.

Well hi from Portland! Looks like some great races coming up that you are involved in. I was interested in the Hood to Coast but it sold out so soon I didn't get a chance to move forward. I'd have liked to try the January 1/2 in 2013 (which I think is already sold out) but DH and I are trying for a kid so I figure I might be too big by then. Plus we will have JUST done 8 days in WDW with my folks in December 2012 so it would almost seem silly.

Love your comment about the 300 lb couch potato. If I hadn't have made a decision back on tax day of 2010 to get my butt in gear, I'd probably be there too. But instead I got to pounding the pavement and lost 80 lbs and went from an 18 to an 8 in pant size! :) Even though I feel a little tight in my skinny pants since my recent wedding, I am determined to continue with the healthy lifestyle and maybe get down to a 6!

Did the Color Run yesterday and it was so much fun!! Dare I say maybe a little more fun than Disney 5ks. Vicki you should totally take your kids next year!! The kids were so fun to watch. I have a small tear in my MCL, so my knee's a tad sore today, but rode the bike at the gym and tomorrow is 7. And I got my last pair of running shoes before raceday, so I get to break those in tomorrow.

How's everybody's training going?

How is everyone surviving the heat? With no access to indoor facilities, I've been struggling to go at least 5-6 mi for my long runs. I really need to get a few more "real" long runs (i.e. 10-12 mi) in over the next 6 weeks! If only the weather would cooperate and give me something to work with in the 60s that isn't at 3am!

This will be my very first half and I'm stressing big time ! Just started "jogging" in March. Friends wanted to sign up for the Color Run and I started C25K (converted to Galloway somewhere along the way).

I'm pretty consistent with my long runs on the weekends, it's during the week I struggle to get in the shorter runs - Ugh ! It's been pretty hot here to. In the 90's and even after the sun goes down it's still SO hot !

Today was my longest so far with 8 miles at a 14 min mile. Towards the end I was thinking " You still have to add another 5 miles to this in the next 6 weeks !!!!!"

Agggghhhh !!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!! You have already won the battle just by starting. This was my first half in 2009 and the reason I got off the couch. Beware, you will be hooked!

If you are at 8 miles for training, you are in a great spot. One thing to remember is that the first 4 and last 1 or so are in the park, so the magic is there to help you through. Plus you will have the adreniline going. The bands. The random strangers screaming your name. The cheerleaders. The dancers. Yourself on the Jumbotron as you run through Angel's Stadium with the stands filled with screaming scouts. And of course the other amazing runners. Last year was rough for me as I did not train as I should have due to injury. But somehow ended next to someone dressed as Tigger for over half the race and we bounced through it together.

So get through those weekday runs. Enjoy the long ones. And get ready for 13.1 Magical Miles!

I live in Phoenix and the heat is a killer. I did a 13.13 mile run on Saturday, with 8 of those miles being outside. The humidity was a killer. :crazy2: This year I joined a gym so I could run on their 1/10th of a mile indoor track - I don't like it but it gets the job done!

If you are up to 8 miles and we still have 7 weeks until the race, you're in great shape!! When I ran my first half marathon, the furthest training I'd done was 10 miles. So just keep adding every weekend, do 9 this weekend, 10 the next, etc. I do recommend trying to get as close to 13 as possible that way your body is prepared for it come the day of the race. I also recommend trying to run on surfaces such as sidewalks. There is a lot of concrete in the parks and on the streets and it takes a toll on the body-I learned last year!

You make a lot of great points in your post. I also wanted to point out that come race day, you kinda get swept up in the crowd like a wave. There is just so much energy and excitement in the air!! It's so much fun!!! I love race day!!!!

Hi Ladybug!

I agree with JD and Rent - Just getting off the couch is half the battle. You will really enjoy the half, and your pace sounds great! When I did the Wine&Dine I averaged a 11 minute mile but on race day I just got swept up with the crowd and averaged just over 10 minutes a mile for the entire 13.1 route. It's still one of my better runs to date!

All - The heat has gotten better in Oregon. I feel for some of you in the Southern part of the states. I told myself on Friday that I was going to do a run of some distance every day between now and the half, because I need to boost my endurance a little bit, and so far so good with a 8 mile run on Friday, a 6 mile run on Saturday, and a 4 mile run yesterday. Probably going to do a 6 mile run tonight or maybe the 5k treadmill action at the gym depending on when I get off work.

I've also discovered that those hard round foam tubes used to work out muscles are REALLY great. They are evil, but they are great. My legs feel great today after 3 solid runs and I give total credit to that evil foam roller.

Hope everyone is doing well!

Foam rollers are the best! I use mine before any run longer than 30 minutes as it gets the blood moving through your legs. It's amazing!!! ::yes::

Those rollers are the best. The only way I can run is because of those "mean" rollers.

Question: first time doing the Disney run. My kiddo is doing the kids race on saturday. We are not getting there until the expo closes on Friday. Can we just pick her race number on Saturday morning before the race?
Do kiddos get a finishers medal?

The Expo opens at 9:00am on Saturday, same time as the Kids Races. I'm not 100% sure but I think you would need to pick it up on Friday.

Yes, they do get a medal, but it's rubber. Lol.

Thank you for that info. I don't think she will care that it's rubber LOL

Not sure how to handle the bib then. We don't get to the airport until 8 on Friday.....:sad2:

Wait, you use yours BEFORE a run? Crap, have I been doing it wrong all this time? I use it AFTER my runs and it is way brutal, but I feel great the next day. It never occurred to me to warm up my muscles prior to running using the rollers of evilness. Maybe I will try that tonight.

Also, has anyone ever experienced little blisters on their legs that I am pretty sure is the body's way of flushing out that lactic acid? It's kinda gross, but I only notice it after running for a few days in a row.

I went to a workshop about how to use the foam roller and the guy said to use it before the run. It moves the blood over the muscles like a wave and gets them all geared up and ready to go. You can use it after the run but he said it's most effective before!

I wonder where I'll be? My mom and I are volunteering for the 5K. I hope in Cars Land handing out the medals.

I hope I get my medal from you!

Hey guys ~ don't know who's flying, but I got an email today from Super Shuttle. If you're flying w/ more than 1 person, they're having a deal where you extra people can be added on for only $5. It includes LAX, SNA and LGB. Didn't check out the website, but if it's not on their site, I held onto the email and can forward it to you if you want it! The deal ends 8/31, so if you come in Fri or sooner, it could save you some money.

That would be cool! I'm just as excited to volunteer as I am to run on Sunday.

I don't know if we will get to pick what we do or if we will just be assigned a job.

Has anyone volunteered for the 5K before?

I'm volunteering for the 5k too so hopefully I'll see you there - I would have loved to run it (especially now I've seen the map & medal) but it sold out too quick!

I've never been to LA before in fact the only place I have been in the USA is Florida so I'm really excited :cheer2: just need to sort my costume now!

does anyone use wireless earbuds for their running? Which ones do you use and do you use it with an iphone? what's your battery life like?
