Anyone have recommendations for good off-site restaurants near the Animal Kingdom Lodge area?

When you mean off site do you mean completely off of Walt Disney property?

AKL has three amazing restaurants on site Sanaa, Boma (one of my favourites) and Jiko.

The nearest restaurants at other resorts nearest to AKL would be Coronado Spring's Maya Grill and Flying Fish or Kouzzina at The Boardwalk. Haven't been to any of those, but I hear and have read amazing things about Kouzzina and Flying Fish.

AKL has a ton of offsite dining options close by on 192. There is even a little side road (W Access Rd) that takes you right to them. We ate at Sweet Tomato, which was very good for the price (soup/salad buffet with special breads and a limited hot food selection) for $9 a person. Here's directions to the location with Google Maps http://goo.gl/maps/uesr :thumbsup2

Moving to the Orlando Attractions forum, as the Disney restaurant forum concentrates on restaurants that are on Disney property.

One of the posters was right, you have an unlimited selection of restaurants on 192, not far at all from AKL. Exiting AKL make the first right, that's Sherbeth Rd. Take it down a couple of miles until you hit the traffic light. That's 192. Left or Right, there's plenty there.

Sweet Tomatoes, though, is a little further from AKL. It's at the crossings plaza at the other end of Disney, going through DTD. After passing all the hotels on the plaza, just cross over into the Crossings. You need to take the access road until it curves, make a left into the parking area and you should see Sweet Tomatoes on the left there. We love that place. Sign up on their website for discounts. You should get one instantly.

If you're looking for nice places to eat, I'd stay on property. We love Boma too:)

I think that the previous poster was probably referring to the Sweet Tomatoes that's about a mile and a half east of Sherberth Road on SR 192 in the shopping center that features the "new" Target store (take a right at the light at the end of Sherberth and go about 1.5 miles, Sweet Tomatoes is on the left).
There are other relatively new restaurants in that same area - an Applebees, a Bahama Breeze, a Miller's Ale House, an Olive Garden, maybe something else I'm just not remembering.

It's been known to happen that I'm wrong from time to time, just ask my wife, she'll say that not a minute goes by, but I thought that that access road had a chain link gate across it. I know that it at least used to be for Disney personnel use only. :confused3

Yeah, we love the restaurants at AKL, but we are just looking for some different options this trip. We are coming for a two week trip so want to have a couple of nights "out"

No, your right. I just took a look again at the map and realized you weren't even past the gate house there :) Man, would that be a short cut though! :thumbsup2

Isn't it 1 1/2 west? Unless there's a new Target I'm unaware of, you take Sherbeth down to 192, then turn right (which is west) for about a mile and a half. Many places to eat...Dh and I really enjoyed Miller's Ale House last fall and will definitely go back on our next trip. It gets very busy though, so going before 6pm can save a big wait time.

Yes, of course you're correct that it's west. I must have turned the map in my mind upside down. Somehow, though, I still sent them to the right at the end of Sherberth. Go figure!!??!
