Hi all! I hope you can recommend me places to EAT (that is family friend too)! :)

We will be in the San Jose (mostly Los Gatos) area, Napa and San Francisco in fall. Anyone have recs on where I should go to eat! Hubby used to live in the Napa area back in 2002 and I lived in East Bay in 2001, so we have somewhat of an idea of areas, but things have changed and we have only been back twice but it was in like 2005 & 2007 or so?

I have on my list:

Rutherford's
Giugni's

If you know any great Vegan places that would be awesome too!!

Thanks!!!

As far as San Francisco, Greens at Ft. Mason is a vegetarian place, and quite good.

Our favorites, non vegan, places are Tadich Grill, Sam's Grill, Rocco's, Golden Boy Pizza, House of Prime Rib, Tommy's Joynt, Original Joe's and many more.

For Vegan food in downtown San Jose there is a cafe on first street between Santa Clara and San Fernando that is called "Good Karma Vegan House". I haven't been in there yet, but it's always been busy at lunch time when I walk past so that seems like a good sign! There's also a Noodle house on Santa Clara street called Tofoo Com Chay that serves Vietnamese vegan food. I think it's somewhere around 300 or 350 E Santa Clara Street or something like that. It doesn't have much seating inside, but it's nice to have vegan Vietnamese options. Vegetarian House is a little farther down E Santa Clara street and it has vegan options, too. The atmosphere is a little odd because of the strong spiritual influences of the group that runs it, but the food is very good and even meat-eaters find things they like here (a very picky 4-yr old ate the "golden nuggets" and loved them, and she usually is picky even about what brand of chicken nuggets she eats). The staff are really helpful and friendly, too.

For other restaurants, we love Vung Tau at the corner of 12th St and E Santa Clara. It's one of the best Vietnamese restaurants in the bay area, has a nice atmosphere, and we love the food.

If you want really amazing food and don't mind spending a bit on it, Manresa in Los Gatos is incredible! It's highly rated, has an outstanding chef, and makes for a very memorable meal. We've only been once and it is still one of the absolute best meals I've ever had.

In a complete shift from Manresa, one of our favorite dinners out these days is to follow the food trucks! In the South Bay they've been doing "Moveable Feast" where a selection of the trucks will gather at a specific location throughout the week - Willow Glen, South SJ, Eastside SJ, etc. I think there's one in Menlo Park, too, but we've never made it there. If you get a chance to try the lobster roll or clam chowder from Sam's Chowdermobile, it's AMAZING! Chairman Bao, Louisiana Territory, MoGo BBQ, Treatbot, and Little Green Cyclo are our favorites, but we've still got a couple more trucks to try that look good, too. The link to their event page on Facebook is https://facebook.com/MVBLfeast/events It's a totally different atmosphere from the restaurants, but the food is so good...and now I'm hungry just thinking about it! :rotfl:

Anyway, we live in downtown SJ and DH is a major foodie, so I've become familiar with a lot of the restaurants around here. As you can tell, we tend to favor ethnic places, so my recommendations will lean heavily that direction if you're interested. DH can point anyone to the best Afghani, North Indian, South Indian, Mediterranean, Vietnamese, Persian, Greek, Peruvian, regional Mexican, Thai, Japanese, Cambodian, etc. restaurants in town. They might be a tiny mom & pop hole-in-the-wall, but he's always looking for authentic and good quality ethnic food. :)

Thank you too!! :) Will look into these too! I love Mom & Pop shops, that's where we always eat here! What kind of food is Manresa? And do they allow children? We have a DS (9) & DD (4). What are your recs for Mexican and Japanese (we're Japanese and I crave fish every other day). Also, about the Moveable Feast, I hope we can get to it!! I love the lunchwagon craze, we also go to the monthly one here too. Nothing like rolling Mom & Pop places...

Check out Cafe Gratitudein Berkeley.

If you are in Los Gatos and mobile, i believe the store in Santa Cruz is still opened.

Alterantively, there are places in Palo Alto to eat.

It's not vegan, but we love Chez Maman in San Francisco. It's not in a touristy area- Protero Hill- but it's a cute little neighborhood place owned by two Frenchmen who atelier ALWAYS there working. There's just a counter and two tables inside, but it's well worth the wait. Absolutely fantastic food. We make a trip from the East Bay just for dinner there.

Have you looked into Japantown in San Jose or San Francisco? We live less than a mile from Japantown San Jose, and it's pretty compact, but we like it. There's a Japanese grocery store, several Japanese restaurants (and our favorite Korean restaurant and a good Ethiopian restaurant), a great coffee shop, and lots of other misc. stores. There's a ramen restaurant, shabu shabu restaruant, a few sushi places, and other places. Kubota is the Japanese restaurant we like best. DS4 is a big fan of the shave ice places, of course. :) Blow Fish Sushi in Mountain View is our favorite sushi place.

For Mexican, it's hard to say. There's a great regional Mexican place in downtown San Jose called Mezcal. It's an Oaxacan regional restaurant with amazing homemade mole sauces. Otherwise there's so many Mexican places around, and we just stop in and try the house specials. DH used to be able to tell people which Mexican place had the best carnitas, which one had the best carne asada, etc. but there's such a high turnover rate that we can't really say for sure anymore. Mostly we just find a small place with a lot of people ordering in spanish and figure it's probably good.

Manresa is definitely not kid friendly. It's much more an expensive date night place. Oh, and in Los Gatos there's a Persian restaurant we like called Mediterranean Shish Kabob. The rice dishes are very good - my favorite is the cherry rice, but DH likes the one with barberries best. DS likes all the kabobs and the sour cherry rice.

Have fun!

Ike's Place, in San Francisco, Cupertino, Stanford, and other places I'm probably forgetting, is absolutely to die for. Best sandwiches I've ever had, hands-down. There are a lot of vegan and vegetarian options too. My personal favorites are the Matt Cain and the Jaymee Sirewich. Soooo good.
