Our First Magical Poly Vacation: April 14-21 2012!

I had not seen this so I am grateful you shared. Very touching story.

I think it just illustrates what makes Disney such a magical place and why so many of us go back over and over again. It's also a tribute to the amazing cast members and the community of Disney fans. Absolutely LOVED this story! :thumbsup2

I think we just missed you at FoW! And that rain was really something!! We got soaked!

Were you at the same show?

I was very happy that I packed the ponchos for the trip. Between the Shamu splashes at Sea World, and the downpour at AK, we really got some mileage out of them!

I'm pretty sure we were at the show right before that! Yes, thank goodness for ponchos...although ours didn't do us much good!

So tomorrow is the start of my second vacation in two months. After going a whole year without any vacation, I'm using up some of those vacation weeks that have piled up on the upper right hand of my paycheck stub. :lmao:

Nope, no Disney this time. But I am taking the DD5 and DS2 to San Diego tomorrow for 6 nights! DW unfortunately couldn't get the time off so she's staying behind but I'm encouraging her to take advantage of her "me-time" to go watch movies or spend some time at a local spa, and catch-up on her sleep.

The kids and I are meeting my parents at the San Diego airport since their flight comes in 5 minute after ours and we will be sharing a family suite at the hotel we are staying. My parents live overseas and we only get to see them two or three times a year at most. In fact, the last time we saw them was back in Thanksgiving so the kids and I are very excited to see them. I used my Disney planning skills to put together an itinerary that is FAR more relaxed than our Disney trip. Most of it either says "Beach Time" or "Pool Time". We'll visit the zoo one day, and per DD's special request, we'll be making a visit to SeaWorld one day. I'm planning on posting some pictures on this thread during our trip and give you all a mini-trip report. Also gives me a reason to show off the pics from my new camera!! :rotfl:

My immediate focus is on the 5 hour flight tomorrow afternoon from Dulles. I'm flying United again since I booked this trip three months ago and waaaaay before my not-so-happy experience with them last week. But, my main focus is keeping DS entertained by myself and having a meltdown- and tantrum-free flight. Soooooo, as the overplanner that I am, I put together an itinerary just for the flight! :rolleyes1 I downloaded a bunch of cartoons on my iPad since the flight doesn't have wifi. I bought a bunch of travel sized toys and will reveal them one at a time to DS and DD. Loaded up on different snacks including ringpops and gum for the initial ascent and final descent. A magnet puzzle. Those Crayola Color Wonder kits. Magnadoodles. New books. Washable markers and drawing paper. I just have to remember to buy enough bottle of juice and drinks for them after I go through security. I'm reeeeealy hoping that DS will take his usual two hour nap during the flight which will make things awhole lot easier.

Anyway, hopefully we'll all be coming off the flight in a happy mood! :thumbsup2

Have a wonderful trip and yay for your DW to have some me-time! That's awesome! Pictures of San Diego would be lovely!!!! (hint, hint) ;)

Hope the flight goes well!! Have a great trip ~ I'm sure you will!

Thanks. I just finished packing everything and I think I've got enough entertainment for both kids!

Have a wonderful trip and yay for your DW to have some me-time! That's awesome! Pictures of San Diego would be lovely!!!! (hint, hint) ;)

I also packed the USB cord for the camera along with an iPad adapter so I'll be able to download my pictures from my new camera and post it on here! I'll try not to go overboard with the pictures on here ;)

I'll be posting some mini trip reports since I'll be in San Diego for the next few days. Also a blatant attempt to delay the inevitable end to our Disney trip report :lmao:

We arrived in San Diego yesterday evening. Kids did great with the 5 hour flight. Not a single episode of crying from DS. They were a little more tired when we had to wait another hour at the San Diego airport as my parents' flight from SFO was delayed for an hour. Thank goodness for my iPad and the cartoons I downloaded on it.

Love our hotel so far which is located in the northern edge of Pacific Beach.

Beach views from right outside our hotel.

Our hotel from the beach - it's the three story copper building on the right.

IMG_0795.jpg

Most of the folks walking around are a much younger crowd than we are. I feel pretty old walking along the surfers and college students. It's been mostly cloudy but I'm hoping to see a nice sunset from our window tonight.

Had a great breakfast this morning at Kono's Cafe.

IMG_0766.jpg

This one's called the Big Breakfast - it was big enough to feed three people!

IMG_0763.jpg

Dinner was a BIG dud - I decided to try a place I wasn't too sure about called Nick's at the Beach. Our seafood dishes were NOT good. Yikes. For the rest of the stay, I have more well vetted restaurants planned, so hopefully that will make up for it.

Kids spent the morning having a blast with their grandparents on the beach. The water and the weather was too cold to go for a swim in the ocean, but they still had a great time playing in the sand. DD just sat for 20 minutes at one point just staring out into the ocean and telling me how much she loves the sound of the waves.

IMG_0781.jpg

Tomorrow we head out to Balboa park to visit the Botanical Building and a miniature railroad museum. We're saving the Zoo for Monday.

Oh! Your pictures of San Diego are beautiful! I love the one of your little ones on the beach! So adorable! What a great view from your hotel room! And, it's always a good sign when there's a line out the door of a restaurant. :goodvibes That breakfast looked fantastic. It's so nice that the little ones can spend time with their grandparents in such a beautiful place! Oh and don't worry about overdoing it with pictures here! I think it's great, and hopefully everyone else agrees with me!

Had another wonderful day here in San Diego. Delicious breakfast at Isabel's Cantina. I had their french toast.

IMG_0862.jpg

My Dad tried the steak and pepper omelet which I thought was excellent!

Afterwards, we visited Balboa Park. LOVED the park. So many museums and the architecture was so distinctly and uniquely beautiful.

With the kids in tow, we only got to visit the Botanical Building which had numerous beautiful flowers. The lily pond in front was great as well.

The highlight of the day for the kids was the Model Railroad Museum. It was very impressive. The level detail they put into the building these model railroad setups were unbelievable.

IMG_0967.jpg

We spend about 2 hours in this museum, and even then we had to pry the kids away because they were having so much fun. DS just stood in front of one exhibit for 15 minutes without moving, and waiting for the same three trains to circle back to his spot over and over again.

Afterwards, we had a nice lunch at the Sculpture Court Cafe next to the Museum of Art. Loved the semi-outdoor sitting area and the food was decent. Kids kept themselves busy buy drawing on the paper tablecloth with crayons while they were waiting for the food. On our way back to our car, we came across a couple of street performers. I think I could have spent easily a whole day just walking up and down the main street area of Balboa Park checking out the many different scenaries.

After we got home, I took DD to the outdoor pool in our hotel and she enjoyed the swim time for about an hour. DS went down to the beach with my parents to play in the sand again.

I had made reservations for dinner at The Fishery, but as DS did not take his nap today, I knew this would be a disaster waiting to happen as his crankiness level was going up a notch! So, had to cancel the reservation, but instead did take out from the same restaurant and ate in our hotel room. So glad we did! All of the entrees were excellent. Ahi tuna, miso salmon, swordfish taco, mussels. I stuffed myself silly.

The weather was much better today with a lot of sun and blue skies. Of course, by the time sunset time came by, so did the clouds so have yet to have seen a nice sunset on the ocean.

Tomorrow we're headed to Sea World.

Kids slept in this morning until 7:15am which almost never happens - DS is usually up and about at 6am on most days. Ate breakfast at a nice cozy restaurant in La Jolla called The Cottage. Parents had their egg benedict and I had a fried egg sandwich, all of which were absolutely wonderful. Their french toast which we all split were unbelievably good as well.

Afterwards, we headed to SeaWorld. I initially did not make plans to visit this park since we just went in Orlando and the two parks looked almost identical in its list of attractions. However, DD made a special request to go. There were little differences compared to the park in Orlando (you know, quarter pounder with cheese vs. royale with cheese kind of differences) that made me chuckle. During the Dolphin interaction demonstrations, DD got to pet and feed (an ice cube) to one of the dolphins. The trainers also taught DD a hand signal that got one of the dolphins squeaking. (Is that the right terminology? Squeaking? Squaking? Squealing? :lmao:)

Picture004.jpg

Next we watched the Blue Horizon show which was pretty much identical to the one in Orlando and still very enjoyable! Caught much better pictures this time around with my new and improved camera!

Then to One Ocean (Shamu's show).

Picture040.jpg

Penguin Encounter Exhibit was one of the last things we did at the park since the one in Orlando was closed for refurb when we were there.

We ended the day with a visit to the Pets Rule show which we had never seen before - thought it was cute and entertaining. Dinner was at Sushi Ota - by far the best sushi place I've been to in the US. The sushi were practically melting in my mouth with each bite. Been eating a lot of good food in San Diego!

Tomorrow: San Diego Zoo

Beautiful pictures, Dave!!!! I LOVE the park and gardens! Okay, now I REALLY want to go back to California, it's been too long!

Beautiful pictures, Dave!!!! I LOVE the park and gardens! Okay, now I REALLY want to go back to California, it's been too long!

Thanks!! San Diego is quickly becoming one of my favorite places to visit. So many more places I want to visit but won't get a chance this trip.

We arrived home last night at 2am. Yes, 2am and no, I didn't plan it that way. United once again did its best to try to dampen our spirits after an absolutely wonderful vacation in San Diego. DD really wants to come back again, next time with DW. Anyway, here's a recap of the last couple of days in SD.

On Tuesday, we headed out to the famous San Diego Zoo. It was fun and the place is pretty massive with a lot of walking but nowhere near the amount of walking at Disney :goodvibes. The elephant exhibit was well done.

There was a peacock roaming the walkways.

I also like the gorilla and monkey exhibits.

Later that day, we had an excellent dinner at George's Ocean Terrace. The food was very delicious and the view was hard to beat.

Picture076.jpg

That night, I took a stroll by myself along the beach after tucking the kids in bed.

Picture079.jpg

The next day, we made a visit to the USS Midway Museum. I think I could have easily spent an entire day here but with the kids, we capped it off at 2 hours.

Thursday April 19th Part IV - Animal Kingdom and Boma

It was still raining quite a bit when we got inside the Planet Watch. This turned out to be a good idea. There were very few people in there although I’m guessing this building doesn’t get crowded much. There were a few Earth Day stations set up including a couple of CMs talking about tarantulas. They had one in a glass exhibit box with them. The kids were engrossed in that talk. I walked over to have a little chat with one of the CMs standing in front of those big glass windows looking into the vet procedure rooms. I asked her about the type of procedures they do, and when they do it. She told me that they are mostly in the morning hours and that, for obvious reasons being that you can never predict when an animal needs medical attention, they don’t have a schedule or early notifications available until around park opening time for each day. They do radio over the schedule for each morning’s procedures to guest services and apparently a CM stationed at the Africa bridge under an umbrella or something, so visitors can get some information as they enter the park. The larger or more exotic animal procedures tend to draw a bigger crowd she said.

The kids then found a little station with a toy fishing pole and some toy magnet animals you could fish with. While they were entranced by that simple set up, I happened to look over to see Rafiki all by himself waiting for someone to meet and greet him.

28be3870.jpg

His CM saw me looking and asked if we would like to meet Rafiki? I said, absolutely! The kids were not interested. So DFIL and I went up and took some pictures with him. After the CM took pictures for us on our cameras (no photopass photog stationed here), I had a short conversation with Rafiki. I asked him if he was staying dry from the rain, and he nodded, then very proudly stroked his head to demonstrate how dry he was. I then asked if he had seen Simba this morning. He said (well, he actually “signs” while the CM does an excellent job of interpreting for me) he just had breakfast with him that day and that he sees Simba at least once every day. I asked what they ate for breakfast, and he said bananas. I laughed and asked “Simba ate bananas too?”. Rafiki said yes and that Simba loves bananas. After we left Rafiki, I kept watching him and he was at one point playing peek-a-boo and hide and seek with a couple of the kids that were walking by.

We left Planet Watch and hopped on the train around 5:00pm. The rain had now stopped to a very faint drizzle. When we got off the train, I thought it would be interesting to go back on the safari ride again since it just rained and the animals would be a lot more happier and cooler! This turned out to be a good idea. The Park had emptied out very nicely thanks to the rain storm. We walked on the Safari ride. There were a lot of animals more active and running around. We saw plenty of giraffes, hippos, rhinos again.

DS had once again fallen asleep during the ride. So we got him in his stroller after exiting the ride. It was 5:30pm. We had a 6:25 ADR at Boma. But we still hadn’t tried EE. So we thought maybe just maybe we could squeeze this in. With a brisk pace, we made it to EE at 5:37pm. I didn’t think there would be time for everyone to go on EE so I sent DW and DFIL in with those expired FPs since the CM had told us they would be good as the ride was closed during our window. Apparently, there was very little line at EE. At 5:41pm, DW and DFIL were out. So DFIL and myself went in and we were out at 5:46pm. I love this ride, but can only ride once at a time – I get very dizzy after just one and pretty sure I will need one of those airplane baggies if I had to go on it twice in a row. And this time, I actually was able to watch the non-animatronic Yeti! I just stared at where the strobe lights were going off, and there he was, in all his frozen-posed glory!

Once we finished the ride, we once again briskly made our way to exit the park. We left EE at 5:46pm, got to Discovery Island at 5:51pm, to the Park gates at 5:57pm. DD and DW were getting a little tired keeping up with my commando paced walking. (And I swear, this was the only time I had used my commando paced walking speed during the whole trip!). A parking lot tram was just pulling in as we were exiting the park, so DD and DW got on. DFIL, DS in stroller and still sleeping, and myself to decided to hoof it on foot. The walking group got to our minivan first because the drop off point for the tram required some backtracking for DD and DW.

IMG_2168.jpg

We were pulling out of the parking lot in our car at 6:05pm and I knew we were in good shape. Arrived at AKL parking lot at 6:13pm and checked in at Boma at 6:18pm with 5 minutes to spare!! So in 43 minutes, we rode EE twice, exited the park and checked in at Boma! Thought that was pretty darn good!!

IMG_2169.jpg

Speaking of pretty darn good, the food at Boma was my favorite for the whole trip. The lamb curry. The steak. The salads. Everything was soooo good. I made three trips to the entrée line. Three! And I wasn’t skimping things for each trip. I was just piling on food after food for each plate. Then I made two trips to the dessert section. All the adults loved it. The kids ate the generic kids food section. As much as we enjoyed Boma though, I can see how some people may not enjoy it as much. I think it boils down to whether you enjoy this specific type of cuisine as much. I think for people who enjoy Indian or Mediterranean cuisine, then this will be perfect for them. But for people like my father who doesn’t enjoy that type of flavoring, it would not go over well since they would have to resort to eating what’s prepared for the kids which are mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, baked chicken, and a tomato based pasta dish – which is why I had to skip out on trying out Boma during last year’s trip as my parents were visiting with us. The zebra domes though, I could have lived without.

The kids were getting a bit antsy as we were finishing our meal. So I took them out to the lobby and out into the Savannah outlook area. This resort was absolutely gorgeous. The architecture and the decorations in the lobby is perfect. And the animals roaming around so close to the rooms and the building just adds another layer of magic. The kids and I watched various animals having their evening snack. I had told DW as were arriving at AKL that I thought this is where we should try to stay for our next trip. When we were heading out the door, she agreed.

We got back to our room around 8:00pm. The kids were ready to hit the bed. Grandpa started packing his bag since he would be leaving the next day, and DW and DFIL were asleep by 9:30pm. I, on the other, could not sleep again especially since we were leaving in a couple of days. I walked over to the GCH to print out DFIL’s boarding passes. Then I just sat there on the beach waiting for Wishes to start while surfing the DIS on my iPad. The night time movie on the beach was playing to my left – A Bug’s Life was this night’s selection. Wishes started at 10:00pm. The music was piped in but at a low volume. I was so glad I got a chance to watch it from the beach. The fireworks appeared much larger than what I had expected. And it gave Wishes a completely different feel. If I had to pick one, I still prefer watching it in MK. But next time, I may make it a point to get the kids out to watch it from the beach as well if we ever stay at Poly again. Afterwards, I hung out on the lobby couch of our longhouse to do some last minute touring plan research for the next day’s MK.

Next: MK Redux

Friday April 20th Part I – Magic Kingdom Day 2

We once again had to get up for an early start. Yup, I scheduled another before-the-park-opens ADR at MK for CRT! This day was DFIL’s last day with us as he was flying home at 4:45pm out of MCO. So, initially he had hoped to have everything packed up before we headed out so that we could stop by GCH and use the airline counter to check his bags. It turned out that there wasn’t enough time in the morning, so we decided to try to check his bags when he came back to Poly for his DME ride.

We took the resort monorail over to MK and arrived at the gates around 7:40am, and they let us in at 7:45am. Just as a side note, for every before-the-park-opens ADR, the CMs did ask each group’s name and reservation time and then checked it against their print-out list. I don’t remember them doing that as consistently during our last trip. Once the turnstiles opened, we were let in, down Main Street. I love the sight of a near empty Main Street.

IMG_2172.jpg

The only thing I miss are the CMs lined up on the sidewalk and waving hello to us. We had a Photopass photog stationed in front of Walt/Mickey statue at the hub take some group shots of all of us with the Castle in the background. I also asked for a Magic shot and he got one where DD and DFIL had their hands cupped so that Tink could be added digitally. Afterwards we checked in at CRT.

IMG_2175.jpg

Before I go into our CRT dining experience, another thing I noted as far as check-in procedure goes. And I admit, that I could be completely wrong about this, but I did notice a glaring difference between Akershus and CRT. We had 8:10am ADRs for both of them. And we checked in to both relatively early and in front of the ADR pack of crowds so I’m pretty sure we had checked in earlier than at least a handful of families who had an 8:00am ADR. For Akershus, we were given a table that turned out to be about the 15th table in terms of the order of tables the princesses visited after they entered the dining area. When we got seated, I noticed that there were about 7-8 tables ahead of us that were not seated yet. So, I assume that the tables at Akershus were assigned by the ADR time and not by how fast you checked-in, meaning that those empty tables ahead of us were eventually given out to those who had an 8:00am ADR time, and we were given a table based on our 8:10am ADR time. In fact, one family who had checked in two groups behind us, was given a table ahead of us about 10th in the order. And that made sense – and a fair thing to do. For CRT, we were the 5th family to check-in, and when we were seated we were given the 5th table! No gaps in the table assignments. Why did I bother to go through all this detail? Because by being the 5th table in the princess-visit rotation, we were able to get all of our character greets early enough to head out the door before rope drop! OK, I think the obsessive commando side of me is rearing its ugly head again, so I’ll stop there. My point is, you may still have a good chance of getting out of CRT before rope drop even if you have a 8:10 ADR as long as you can be one of the first group to check in!

Okay, back to programming! The food was a huge improvement from our previous CRT Dinner experience. I had the steak and eggs and I can’t remember what the other adults ordered but they all liked it. The princesses were polite but not much extra interaction happened. DD still was in heaven.

IMG_2186_edited.jpg

This dining was actually her idea. When I initially made ADRs, I had left out CRT as we had Akershus and 1900 Park Fare scheduled. Plus, DW and I weren’t too impressed with our last CRT dinner for the price we paid. We did like eating inside the castle, but thought once was enough. Well, DD had other ideas and in addition to meeting Rapunzel, CRT was the only thing she specifically requested to me when I was planning our visit. DS had a grand ol time as well. When he got his sword, he was ecstatic but then a few minutes later, he really wanted the star wand that DD was holding. Anyway, we had a nice surprise at the end when the last princess entering the room was none other than Jasmine instead of Snow White!

IMG_2187_edited.jpg

It was funny, because I had joked to DW that I hope we get lucky and get Jasmine to fill in as a sub for Snow White (which I’ve read happens occasionally) so that we could save time not having to get in line in the Parks to see her.

When we made our way out of the restaurant, it was 8:40am. I thought, this was perfect. Got enough time to stroll our way down Main Street again before rope drop and be first in line for Rapunzel. I was also sending off DW and DFIL to Space Mountain so they could ride stand-by since this was on DW’s must do list. Since I had already ridden it during my solo tour of MK, I told her I would be happy to take both kids down Main Street to meet Rapunzel in her brand new location. Except, right before we were about to split up, DD declared she needed to use the bathroom. And by the time she came out, it was 8:50am. I still thought I had enough time. DW and DFIL went on their way to SM. I pushed DS in his stroller and DD was following me at a slightly brisk pace but she was keeping up. I was staring at the Train Station as I fast-walked down Main Street. At 8:53am, I saw the train pulled in, and I knew my plan was in trouble since I was only half way down the street! I’ve watched those darn youtube videos of the opening ceremonies enough times to know that I only had about 2 minutes before the crowds are let in. I turned around to DD and said “I’m so sorry sweetie, but we’re going to have to run”. And run we did. We were about 40 yards or so away when I heard the countdown. The sweet sound of RD countdown that normally sounds so magical – well this morning it sounded more like the bell tower in Cinderella that counted down to midnight and turned everything into a pumpkin! Poor DD. She was trying her best to keep up with her daddy who was now a good 10 yards ahead of her. And I felt so horrible making her run like this. Have no idea what all of those CMs lined up on Main Street waiting to greet the RD crowd was thinking about me. When she caught up to me and we were about 20 yards out, the rope dropped and the crowd poured in!

With DD in one hand, and stroller in another we rushed to the queue entrance for Rapunzel and there were only two families that entered the queue ahead of me. Except, the CM calmly and politely tells me that I need to park the stroller next to the planter. As I frantically looked around to figure out which of the two planters he was talking about, two more families entered the queue. So, I had to make a snap decision. I picked the planter that was closer to the Chamber of Commerce, parked the stroller, and entered the line. We ended up being about 8 or 9th family in line. DD was trying to catch her breath but she was still very happy. As I’m catching my breath as well (and let me tell ya, those steak and eggs were not sitting too well by that point), I looked over to where I parked our stroller and noticed nobody else was parking theirs there. I looked over to the other planter and see a line of strollers parked! Now, I probably could have let that one go, but I felt a little guilty. There was a mom and daughter standing behind us. I asked the mom if she wouldn’t mind watching DD for a couple of minutes while I go re-parked our stroller. I asked DD if it would be okay to do that and she was fine with it. So while holding DS in my arms, I went out the queue halfway and asked the CM if it was okay where I parked the stroller. She said it was perfectly fine so I made my way back to DD. And folks, that concludes our race to meet Rapunzel. I was sweating like crazy and trying to catch my breath. At 9:15am the queue was completely full and about 25 groups behind us. DW called me and said that they were done with SM. I asked her to swing by PP and pull FPs for all of us (since I had this sort of planned out the night before, I had made sure I gave all of our park passes to DW before we split up at CRT) then she and DFIL can ride Haunted Mansion which was another one I had already done on my solo tour.

When the time came to meet Rapunzel, it was totally worth it. DD was completely in awe once again.

IMG_2190.jpg

Rapunzel also greeted DS who was in my arms. I told Rapunzel that we were trying to find Pascal while we were waiting in line. We actually did because DS was starting to get fussy and restless waiting in line – so I started a game with him to see if he could find Pascal hiding somewhere on the meet and greet stage. It was actually funny because one of the little girls that were in front of us did have a stuffed Pascal on her shoulder when she went to meet up with Rapunzel. So I said to DS, “Look, there he is” and he said to me with a blank look “Noooo, that’s not the real Pascal”. Anyway, Rapunzel told DS that Pascal is indeed around here but he’s such a good hider that it’s very difficult to find him. I have to say that Rapunzel is my favorite princess as well when it comes to interactions with the kids. She seems to have more personality than the others and less “sterile” if that makes any sense.

Great update! Where did you get your daughters autograph book with the picture of Rapunzel on it? Also,i read that when seeing Rapunzel in the morning the lighting is bad with shadows? Did you notice that in your pictures?
