Health food coming to the Disney parks??????

I read this today:

As someone who happily resides in the Disney bubble and often has to balance the joys of said bubble with the realities of advertising on Disney channels and food in Disney parks, I heartily welcome this. Happy to see the Kelly Brownell tentative stamp of approval, too - this appears to be a good step in the right direction, and it makes me glad to continue to funnel my money (oh, so much of my money) to Disney.

hands off my vacation junk food - i watch what i eat like an insane person ...i don't eat any processed food, or meat or sugar or carbohydrates, or just about anything....

but when i'm on vacation, i'm on vacation....let me choose what i want, not what you think i should be eating when i'm on vacation....

Amen!!!
Homecooked, healthy meals [though we do eat meat]. Vacation is when I don't have to fuss with that.

Why can't we have both options. Can't there be regular choices and healthy choices. That way everyone can make their own decisions which way they want to eat on vacation.

Apparently not.

HANDS OFF MY JUNK FOOD DISNEY  You'll have to pry those chicken nuggets and fries out of my cold, dead hands!

The Newseum in DC runs a headline promotion - the winner gets free admission tickets - today's was this topic. The winner: “Disney Stops Promoting Spoonful of Sugar.” :lmao:

I'm confused. I did not see anything on the article about it changing snacks and other food options in the parks. This was literally just on ABC News and that was not mentioned either. Instead, the focus appears to be on the commercials run on Disney channels. The parks have been offering healthier snack options for the past few years. I have heard nothing about items being changed in the parks.

Nikki, I think the Parks piece might have come from the NYT article I posted right after OP's link.

And I'm pretty sure you can still get all the treats you want and then some. I certainly intend to indulge on our upcoming vacation...but I also like the option to rein it in if I want to. More choices here can't help but be a good thing. And I'm a lot happier about loading my kiddos up on Mickey bars if they've just had something moderately healthy for lunch. :)

I would be happy to see some changes in response to concerns about what food is being sold. If they have to take away unhealthy choices in order to make enough money selling healthy choices then I'm all for it that too.

Disney will get less and less of my hard earn dollars for icky food. When they went to whole wheat buns, I stopped buying hot dogs and hamburgers. When they got rid of the McDonalds French fries we stopped getting out afternoon snack at Epcot.

Sorry, it's vacation. I'm careful with what we eat the rest of the year. On vacation, I want McDonalds fries and good hamburgers/hot dogs. I cannot stand those wheat things.

More changes, less food I will purchase on property. Sorry, but I am tired of it.

Exactly. Some of us prefer to stick to our usual diets even when we are on vacation. That simply isn't an option right now. If I had a choice of a regular or whole wheat roll, I'd take the wheat roll every time. That's all I eat at home. That's all I want to eat when I'm away from home.

That doesn't mean I don't have a Dole Whip or a churro as a treat at Disney, but for my meals, I'd like some decent choices.

read up on wheat. It is not a healthy choice. among other things it is one cause of obesity. DIsney should get rid of it, if they are truly interested in our health.

I was fairly happy with the selection of healthier options on our last trip. I has my fill of junk food but also ate lots of fruits and veggies. If anything, we would have liked healthier options for breakfast which is so important when you have a big day of fun ahead.

I really find that at the beginning of the trip I'm craving and wanting everything that's junkie, but as the days roll on I quickly crave REAL food that gives me energy and keeps me feeling active.

Nom nom nom :cat:

I too would love more healthy options. I have dietary restrictions and it has made eating at Disney difficult. Even though disney is known for providing extra assistance to those with dietary restrictions, I haven't found this true all across property. I've had issues at most resort CS restaurants, and even at MK tortuga's tavern they gave me grief about a veggie option (nachos, hold the beef). I'm not asking to be treated specially, but would love to have more options than a salad!

I'm not asking them to remove items- I wouldn't eat them but I don't care if you do! I think Disney fries are quite fantastic :)

One of my favorite things to do at Disney is eating...and the stuff I like to eat while I'm there aren't "healthy options". To me, that is the FUN of being on vacation...you "let go" and do a lot of things you dont do(within reason, of course!) throughout the rest of the year.

I think I smell a reader and believer of the "Wheat Belly", "The Primal Blueprint", or the "Paleo Solution". :goodvibes

I LOVE the fact that Disney is making an effort to provide guests with Healthy food options. That being said, I also agree that we need to make the choice for ourselves. When vacationing with my family, YES I will purchase the box of cheese and fruit or something healthy for my kids during the day. However, at the end of the night after dinner I always treat them to something like a cotton candy, ice cream, churro, etc. I would not want to see those less healthier choices go away completely. People need to decide for themselves what a good balance is going to be for their family.

Another one here - I'm a Type I diabetic who eats zero wheat based products (hardly any other carbs either). My issue is that what I consider healthy (fats and protein) isn't necessarily what Disney would consider healthy and I would rather continue to have multiple choices than be forced to eat what they think I should eat.

BTW, Disney and the DCL cruises I've been on have been the easiest vacations I've ever had to stick to my low carb paleo diet.
