OT: any good reading recommendations

hi all,

so i will read most any book in most any genre as long as it is written well. i read voraciously, and at quite a fast pace, so i like to always have a new book to read when i set down my previous book.

regretfully, i find myself in need of new (or older that i haven't stumbled across before) material, as i have read everything i currently own/have downloaded.

i recently finished the 5 part epic that is George RR Martin's Song of Fire & Ice opus and i am enchanted with the world he has created, however since he has yet to grace us with books 6 and 7 in the set, i am seeking other reading materials.

i will take any recommendations from any genre, trashy romances, epic fantasy, historical, thrillers, murder mysteries, chick lit, etc. actually the only things i don't read are 'real life stories' or autobiographies or non-fiction. i like a little escapism in my down time.

so... any recommendations for good books you've recently read, or not so recently read?? inquiring minds would love to know.

The only reading i seem to get done these days is on the disboards so i'm not much help but i can say there are some very comical threads on here

Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series - the first book is either called Outlander or Cross Stitch, depending on where you buy it from (I'm pretty sure it's Cross Stitch here) - amazing book, which is also part of an amazing series, there are currently 7 books in the series, and hopefully the 8th book will be released early next year.

Favourite series of books ever! (Much better then the teen books that seem to get so much press)

Alternatively for just as good, but a lighter read is anything by Marian Keyes.

ETA - I'm not a cryer at all, but Diana's books make me tear up, they're so good.

Okay, I'll share some chick lit.
Spellman Files - Lisa Lutz. Really easy reading.
Stephanie Plum series - Janet Evanovich. Really enjoyed the first 6 or 7 books. Got up to 10 - 12. Haven't read 16 or 17...or is she up to 18? Anyway, the books are better than that movie.
Outlander series - Diana Gabaldon.

Some kids/fantasy I've been checking out (my excuse is because DS is reading these)...

Deltora Quest series - Emily Rodda
The new Doors series by Emily Rodda (2 out of 3 released)
Inheritence series - Christopher Paolini (okay more for me than for DS)
Young Samurai series and the follow up Ring series - Chris Bradford. Set in 16th century Japan.
I'm going to try to get DS into the David Eddings Belgariad series next. We'll see.


I personally love the fantasy genre...so anything by Raymond E Feist.


I'm trying to re-read the Life of Pi by Yann Martel. I read it years ago when it first came out and I know that there is a movie coming out soon. If I recall my thoughts when I read it the first time, I thought it was a book that I just couldn't grasp what the analogies to real life were. And I think that there was meant to be lots. Maybe re-reading it at a different stage in life will make a difference.

And I should say that I have two books that I need to start...more for personal development more than light reading. Bought these months ago....the Dis keeps getting in the way.

11.22.63 by Stephen King. Really really enjoyed this book.

I usually steer clear of 'the latest thing' but I LOVED the Hunger Games books. I am also a huge fan of CS Harris. They are regency mysteries with a touch of romance. The first one is What Angels Fear.

People keep raving about "50 Shades of Grey". Can't say i've read it, but apparently its a good book. I think there are a few in the series.

thank you all so much for the recommendations... aside from the hunger games (awesome world building, not so fussed with the actual story line) i have not read any of these authors/books, so this is a great compilation.

i have made a note of all of these, and will start downloading soon

on another note, just finished season 2 of gossip girl and am about to start season 3 tomorrow. i am so in love with chuck bass...

lol, don't apologise! My boss' wife came in raving about the series, so a couple of us read the first book, and we had a bit of a giggle about it
