If it’s Crazy, I Don’t Wanna Be Sane: Just Me and My 2 to Disney-June 2012 PTR

We interrupt your regularly scheduled trip report, for a very special announcement.

party:  :yay: :woohoo:

My little girl is 9 years-old. Her birthday was yesterday. We had a celebration at a local play place. All the children loved it. Might take us a couple of days to recover.

Bumper cars, they were a big hit.

This is a Mickey Mouse Club House, an inflatable version. He was in heaven.

My favorite shot was of her in front of her cake surrounded by her guests singing happy birthday, but I can't post that one on here.

They had a ball: 6 friends from school, 5 cousins, a little brother, 2 grandmas, two aunts, and her friends' parents, and 1 mom who was glad to do it and glad it's over. :rotfl2:

Happy birthday to your little girl! Love your report, can't wait to hear more. Love the dresses, especially yours and the Rapunzel ones!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Looks like it was a lot of fun! I'm sure you had a blast, but I know what it feels like to be glad that it all came together, and now you can RELAX! Now back to planning!

Thank you. It was so much easier when she was little and I just brought a cake and goodie bags to her daycare class. No gifts, but no worrying about who responds and who doesn't and all that stuff. It was a lot of fun. Most of the parents had to promise a return trip to the place in order to get their children to leave without a fuss. :rotfl: The company hadn't been in that location long and none of the children had been there. I heard the kids took a vote while I was out of the room and declared it "the best party ever!" :cool1:

She's getting older now and that was probably the last big party I'll give her so I'm really glad it went well. We'll probably be converting to  :faint: sleep overs or Build-a-Bear and spa stuff for her with 2 or 3 girls going forward. Plus I plan to start giving ds parties when he turns 3 next year. He hasn't had one yet.

Just wanted you to know that it's beena crazy week, so I was running a little behind schedule, but I mailed your package out today! You should have a little Disney mail by Tuesday!

:woohoo:

:yay::hug:

Manny arrived today. Ds greeted him with a smile, a "hi Manny" and a hug. Then he escortd Manny to his new home in his room. I appreciate it so much. He was so happy. I think he has joined Mickey in his bed for later. My daughter really liked her surprise as well. God bless you for your kindness toward us.

I know it has been a while. My report was back to page 3 on here. Work and life in general have been kind of crazy. I’m wearing down a bit, so I’m glad it’s Friday. I had this typed up already, so I thought I’d post about our departure week plans.

First though I have got to give a :woohoo: I found ds a life-jacket at Dicks Sporting Goods. Coast Guard Certified floatation device marked down from $29.99 to $7.97. Too bad they didn't have dd's size marked down too. But then the only color marked down was red/yellow. The little diva would have taken issue with it not matching her swim wear. :rotfl:

Now, back to your regularly scheduled trip report:

So, in my last post about the trip I talked about packing quite a bit. My motto has become “Don’t leave home with more than your family can carry without help.” It helps that dd is old enough and able to push ds in his stroller. I tell her these trips would not be possible without her help. It’s true. We wouldn’t be able to fly like we do. Someone would have to drive us to the airport and help us get the luggage checked in at least. But I drive us and park the van and it waits for us while we are gone and we go into the terminal just the three of us. I like knowing my vehicle is there when we get home. So that leads me into our departure day plans.

Of course every departure day starts with how you handle the days leading up to it, particularly the day before. We leave on a Thursday morning. My goal is to be done packing the weekend before, so that Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday I can spend doing the last minute preparations. Monday after work, I’ll do some shopping for last minute items I don’t have yet (if there are any). I’ll get ds a haircut that Tuesday afternoon (2 days before) and (I’m hoping) dd will get a salon visit for a scalp treatment and texturizer that Wednesday, so her hair is easy to wash after pool time and not difficult for the Fairy Godmother In Training at BBB. I am messaging my hairdresser about it today actually.

Once we get home that Wednesday, I’ll give the children a light snack and baths (they will have already eaten dinner) and print our boarding passes. I have early bird check-in because I will be pretty busy at the 24 hour mark. Dd has agreed she probably needs to be in bed by 7 that Wednesday night. At least she has agreed for now. She has this thing about going to bed when it is still light out, but I’m hoping summer camp will have tired her out to the point she passes out after her bath. My son however, is another story. He’ll probably be up until around 8:30 or 9. My goal is to be ready to go to bed around that time myself. We’ll see how it goes. I have to get up at 4:30 so I can be completely ready when I get dd up at 5:00.

We have separate toiletry items we travel with, including tooth brushes, so I can have everything packed in the suitcases the night before and in the van or in our carry-ons which will be downstairs by the door. It was kind of a pain to remember “pack your toothbrush when you’re done” so I picked up these travel ones that fold. A couple of travelers that will go in the bags will be in bed with my children, so I will have a reminder taped to my carry-on to make sure we don’t leave without them. Ds has Mickey Mouse and a Handy Manny plush he sleeps with and dd has a Tiana (as a little girl) doll. Don’t want to forget these. Tiana actually has a growing travel wardrobe. :rotfl2:

So the plan is for me to get up at 4:30, get cleaned up and dressed, try to sneak the lovies out of their beds and get the carry-on bags into the van by 5:00. At 5:00, I’ll get dd up. Her clothes will be out already. I’m hoping once I remind her what day it is, she’ll get up quickly, but she has never had to get up this early. Once she is in the bathroom, she should be good to go. Then I’ll make sure everything is off, set the thermostat and head to ds’ room. I’ll wipe ds down with a warm rag, change his diaper and get him dressed. I’m hoping it is one of those days I can do this without waking him. But I’m saving it for last in case I can’t. If he wakes too early he just wants to be held. The goal is to be on the road to the airport by 5:30. It should be about a 20 to 25 minute ride that time of morning. I figure if we are there by 6:00, and daily parking is available (across the street from the terminal) we can unload and be inside by 6:10, two hours before our flight. Last time I flew Southwest on a weekday morning the line was a bit long, so I want us to have plenty of time. Thankfully some years ago, I found an alarm clock with a battery compartment so even if the power goes out, it continues to work. I will also set the alarm on my phone as backup. No Home Alone airport scenes for this crew.

Once we are through security, I’ll stop at a store and get some drinks to fill my son’s sippy cups and the bottles I bring for dd and me. I bring everything empty now that ds if off formula. Even though he’s young enough they would probably let me bring liquids for him, it’s just easier that way. Haven’t decided on breakfast yet. I know we could bring food from home, but I might want something hot. There’s a restaurant right near the gate, where I could get us some breakfast. Our last two trips, I got us lunch and dinner from there, but I know they have breakfast stuff too. I haven’t made a final decision on that yet.

So that’s roughly our departure week plan. I’ll get into our touring plan a bit more in upcoming posts.

This isn't going to be along post. I have had a really rough day and am really tired. :headache:

I couldn't go without acknowledging the thing that saved the day for me.

We are at 45 days and our package is paid in full.

party: :woohoo:  :cool1: :yay:

And if I'm honest, :faint:

Congrats on getting your trip paid off! The next few weeks are going to fly by! Your daughter's party looked like fun! Best party ever? :thumbsup2 So cool! Your day before and your travel day plans look great. I agree that it's best to only take what you can carry. It definitely helps when the kids are old enough to roll their own bags! On our trip to Boston a couple of months ago, the kids and I did the same thing. If it didn't fit in the suitcases or the backpack, it didn't go. That didn't keep me from overpacking :rolleyes1 but that's another story

Thanks. I still find it hard not to over pack. All those lessons I learned when dd was little were long forgotten when I was unexpectedly blessed with my son. I probably still bring too many clothes for him, but I'm pretty good on my daughter and me.

On the first trip I packed too many snacks to avoid ordering as much from Garden Grocer. That turned out to be a $50 mistake, the amount I had to pay for my bag being overweight on that first trip. Figuring that out is still a work in progress. When I pack more we don't eat it on driving trips. When I pack less I end up spending more like when we went to Great Wolf Lodge for the first time. They beat Disney on overpriced snacks by a mile.

Last time we did a week long summer vacation the little diva had just turned 7 and just said, "pack whatever you bought me for summer" So, I'm a bit worried about when she starts to pack for herself. Both of our trips to Orlando were surprises for her so she had no say in what she had. This time I let her go through the DISign files with me to pick out some pictures she wanted for shirts, and she picked out some dresses. I'm figuring on two outfits a day for her, but not sure how I'll combine the tops and bottoms yet. Her body is changing and with the heat, she can't do repeats like she used to. I'm hoping to take some bottoms though that can go with more than one top.

I am not sure I'll be able to work out doing laundry, so I'm going to aim to keep it to two large uprights I can pull with my hands (one for the children's clothes and one for my stuff, dd's dress for BBB and my son's pull-ups, diapers and wipes) then if I run out of room, possibly a small one for the little extras I bought that I can connect to one of the big ones. With dd pushing ds we should be fine. And once I get the luggage checked, I'll be down to my backpack and the stroller as I'm not taking a car seat this time.

I pray things go well with you and you get to take that trip to Hershey park with your family. Thanks for checking in.

We’re on countdown here now that we are past the 45 day mark. I’ve been tweaking our touring plan and setting our goals for each day and I will post about those in the coming days.

Dd has been talking more about what she wants to do in each park and I’m finalizing our plans and packing lists. For one of her shirts, she had picked out a Mickey bubble design in Shadowryter’s file that was really cute. It’s an aqua colored Mickey head with white stars in it. There’s a picture of Ariel the Little Mermaid sitting talking to Flounder. I made a request to have her name put in one ear of the Mickey head and 2012 in the other. I found one that already had Mommy in one ear and asked that 2012 be put in the other so we can match. What was left was to find her a bottom to wear with her shirt. She wants to wear it to do the Ariel (and Eric) meet and greet on one of our MK days. I put the M&G in our touring goals for the first thing on one of our days because I read that it was best to get to her line by 9:30am. And then went in search of a skirt to go with the shirt. While looking on etsy.com and ebay.com, I ran across a beautiful ruffle skirt I know dd would love and it had the same colors as the Mickey head in her shirt. I wasn’t going to click on it, because it was $40.00 (lots of material to make the ruffled look), but for some reason unknown to me at the time, (other than the skirt was cute) I clicked on it.

A lump formed in my throat as I read the shop owner’s story of how her 3 year-old daughter Arianna (nicknamed Ari) had passed away last year from cancer and she makes these skirts as parts of care packages and to give money to the charity she formed for children still in the hospital where her daughter received care. Ariana is my daughter’s name, just spelled different and her nickname is also Ari. I immediately initiated a convo to have one of the skirts made in my daughter’s size. We know loss here, though of a different kind. I’ve made a lot of purchases for this trip, but none touched my heart like this one.

I am a single mom to an 8 year old... 8 going on 20. I have enjoyed reading your posts. My family (my parents and two adult sisters, and my girl) and I will be going on our trip from June 23 to June 30. We are staying off site. I love the preparation and love you have put into your trip. Your kids are so beautiful and great. You must be so proud! Keep up the great posts!

:welcome: and thanks for leaving a comment. 8 going on 20 is a good way to describe it. My daughter told me today about something that happened and said, "I was so young, just 8 years-old" Mind you she's been 9 all of 17 days, but when I reminded her of that, she said. "Well, yes, but I'm 9 now...hello?" :rotfl2: What could I have been thinking?

We are really excited about our trip. Do you have a PTR? I love reading trip reports maybe more than I like reading them. The date seems so close, yet so far away.

My children are blessed and a a blessing and I feel so fortunate to be their mother.

The kindness shown to them since their father died has been heart warming.

He's sleeping in his bed next to a Handy Manny doll a fellow diser was kind enough to pass on to us after her daughter loved him for a while.

Yesterday, I started a convo on etsy.com with a shop owner who just makes her products to help children who still receive care at the hospital her daughter was in prior to passing away from cancer. The skirt I wanted to purchase was well beyond what I wanted to pay when I went looking, but I couldn't help but click on it and knew why when I read her story. I wrote about that in my last update, how I felt so honored to purchase the skirt to support the work she is doing.

I was in for a surprise. I told her I'd lost my Ariana's father and try to be of support to other widows with children though haven't managed to on that scale and how I was so inspired by what she was doing. She messaged me back saying she could not imagine how my Ariana had suffered and since her products were made to help suffering children she wanted to give my daughter the skirt she wanted.

 :lovestruc

I hardly knew what to say. I humbly accepted then went to her website to make the first of what I hope to be a few donations. Also led some people to her site and when I told my mother what happened she wanted to donate as well. Her charity will end up even better off than if I'd just bought the skirt because of her generosity towards us and my daughter got to find out yet again that even though this thing happened to us and terrible things happen to a lot of people, they remain kind.

In coming posts I'll begin to post our goals for each day of our trip.

Okay, I have a rough touring plan done. I don't get real deep with it. Just start with a list of goals of stuff we want to do, try to keep us going to bed on time, leave us time to get to our dining reservations and as is the case with this trip, our BBB appointment.

Our flight lands at MCO at 9:40. I hope we'll get to Wilderness Lodge by 11.

June 21st-
Lunch at Roaring Forks
If room ready, nap
If room not ready, pool, nap

MK boat around 3:00: I hope to get over there around 3:30 and enter as the parade is ending. I heard this was a good time to hit:

Rapunzel Meet and Greet

My original plan for this was rope drop and that is still my alternate plan in case this one doesn't work. But I have read a lot of complaints about the lighting in her area in the morning messing up pictures, so we'll try this first.

After hopefully meeting Rapunzel, we'll head over to Adventure Land likely making a stop at Mickey's Philharmagic. We are not very good at walking by it.

Adventure Land goals:
Snack, Aladdin’s Magic Carpet
Jungle Cruise FP
Disney Fairy Meet & Greet
Jungle Cruise
Dinner at Columbia Harbor House (approximately 6pm)

Fantasy Land goals:
It’s a Small World
Dumbo
Philharmagic
Carousel

We'll probably do some repeats here if time allows, but this is our only night in MK for the evening entertainment, so at a certain point, we'll have to pack it in and get settled for it. But I want to get the kids cleaned up first.

Baby Care Center

Snack (approximately 8pm)

Then, I'll pull out some glow sticks and we'll eat and drink slowly until 9:00

MSEP
Magic, Memories, and You Castle Show
Wishes

Now, the hours have changed and right now, MK is scheduled to stay open until 11:00 on June 21st. They have another MSEP scheduled for 11:00.

Not sure how this will effect us right now. Hoping lining up for MSEP will be a little easier with the 2nd showing scheduled, or maybe leaving at Wishes will be a little easier since the park isn't closing. Could be the complete opposite. Who knows.

I've also heard that they are just as likely to extend the hours and stay open until midnight. We'll see.

So, that's day 1. My son is really good about napping, especially if I get lunch in him. I just hope the room is ready so that I can lay down too. That girl of mine is not a morning person is already planning to sleep on the plane, but I'd like for her to rest too.

My alternate plan for seeing Wishes is to take the boat from WL to the Contemporary on another night. Haven't decided if we'll get on the monorail and go the Poly Beach or stick with the Contemporary.

Thoughts?

Sorry I've been MIA for a while! It's been a crazy, busy week here. So glad your DS likes his Handy Manny! :thumbsup2 My DD still loves to sing the theme song, but she just wasn't giving Manny the love that your DS could give!
:lovestruc
Your touring plans sound good for the first day. I'm a big planner, but I don't go as far as to plan the order of the rides each day. I mostly just plan which park, ADRs, and sometimes which "land" to head to first. I think having the GAC (due to my kids' special needs) makes the planning a little easier, because we don't have to race to get FPs for some of the hotter rides. (Actually, for our next trip, we'll miss out on some of those, since DS isn't going with us and DD probably won't be tall enough. DH and I don't have too many rides that are "must do"s enough that we'd ride alone.)

I've also decided to try for a mid-day flight. I'm kind of OCD about our first day at WDW. It must be at Magic Kingdom, and I like that first moment to be an early morning, walking into MK and seeing the castle. We've never gone to the parks on our arrival day. Maybe someday I'll get over my craziness with this so we can maximize our time on Disney property, but for now we're planning on spending arrival day at the pool and enjoying the resort.

this is a super sweet story! great job paying it forward as well!

congrats on being all paid off!

last trip, i ordered diapers for James from Amazon and had them shipped directly to the room. we were maxing out on the number of things to carry/ people to keep track of and the number of available hands. amazon has since changed things up a bit and now tend to offer larger packages of pullups etc- which may defeat the purpose if you would have to make room for the leftovers on teh way home. anyway, just a thought- there may be other places that could do that as well- maybe they would be a 99 cent shipping walmart item or something

I have thought about doing this. What kept me from doing it on our first trip was a fear the hotel would do something nuts with the package or it not getting there on time or it getting their early. I figure at least they are expecting that Garden Grocer order, and I could put in the date I wanted it delivered. I have read of several people who did it, but I was nervous about ordering online something like I do when I shop online from here.

So, do you just give them the address of the hotel when you order? Do you put some type of special instructions at the time you place the order?

I was actually considering packing either his pull-ups or his swim diapers and night-time diapers. It comes out even on Garden Grocer whether I order the pull-ups and pack the swim diapers and night time diapers or whether I order the swim diapers and night-time diapers and pack the pull-ups.

Ordering from Wal-Mart is very tempting with their $0.97 shipping. :scratchin
