With all the rumors floating around, I figured, why not just ask? I emailed them via the Disneyland Resort website and got an answer back today. While I don't think this counts as "official", I don't see why a Guest Communications Rep. would lie or be misinformed this close to the attraction re-opening. Here is a copy of the email...

There is some speculation on the ride height requirement changing for
MATTERHORN once it is refurbed and reopened in June. Do have any
information on the height requirement changing and when the Disneyland
Park website will be updated to reflect any changes. Thank you!

I hope it's true!! That's awesome, yah!!! My DD is almost 5 now, but I don't think I'd be comfortable putting my 36" in a seat all by themself on that ride for the first time, it is alittle scary. Not even sure if I'll get DD to ride by herself, haha I wish they could have somehow made the seats so they could hold 2 if needed, or have a back seat like Splash for 2.

Good to know that the smaller kids can ride; but if they don't have seat belts, my grandson will not be riding.

I know what you mean. I think my DD4 will be ok but it sure would have been nice to ride with her for her first ride like the old style seats. I was worried she may miss out on this ride. And having big sister be able to go on and her not be able to would be a bummer! I am prepared for that, but I hope they BOTH get to ride!

Rest assured, there will most definitely be some sort of restraint system. There has been much discussion lately on the boards on if it will be a lap bar or a seat belt that can't be released, except by a CM (such as on Soarin or Indy). The pictures that have been posted on this site all show a restraint, just not 100% on what type.

I've always been surprised at Matterhorn's short height requirement of 35".

Twenty-four-month-old boys average about 34.5 inches in height, and have a normal range from 32 to 36.7 inches.

For such a scary ride, I would guess most 2 year olds couldn't handle it. It's just weird, because for every other ride at Disney, as soon as my kids reach the height requirement, they go. But Matterhorn, it's at least a year or two after they meet the height requirement. My son will be 38 months old and approaching 40" tall when we go, but won't be going on Matterhorn. Splash Mountain is much more tame than Matterhorn, IMO.

I'm 64" and NOT ready for the Matterhorn yet. :rotfl2:

My 2.5 year old son is up towards 38 inches, and I know he's love this ride... if I could hold him! I feel he's too young for this in a seat alone. I wonder if they'd still let smaller ones sit with parents? The seats in front look slightly larger...

Here's an article on the Matterhorn refurb from the OC Register website posted on May 3:

http://ocresort.ocregister.com/2012/05/03/matterhorn-getting-most-extensive-rehab-ever/111819/

Here's the final sentence of the article:
"The minimum height requirement for passengers will be seven inches taller – rising to 42 inches."

The article does not credit a source for this particular tidbit of information. The author of the article did interview a Disney employee for the piece though.

A number of fan sites have also purported to know about the new height requirement.

It is not unprecedented for Disney phone or e-mail CMs to be the last people with correct information.

I think the most definitive answer on height requirement for the refurbed Matterhorn will be the signage and CMs at the ride once it has re-opened.

I guess we will know in a few weeks and we can quit guessing. I look forward to knowing and reading everyones ride experience with the the new changes.

UPDATE: According to the following thread, the new height requirement for the Matterhorn will be 42-inches when it opens on June 15.

UPDATE (June 11, 2012): The Wait Time Board at DL has been updated to show that the new height requirement for the Matterhorn Bobsleds is 42".

I so totally agree with this! To me, bringing our not quite 3 year old but 36" grandson on Splash mountain sitting in the back seat side by side would be so fun, but having him ride alone in a seat strapped in or not on the matterhorn screams trauma!! he would be so scared. I wonder why they don't put a lap belt in the back seat of the logs on splash and let the 36" kids ride?

The inconsistency is killing me.

If they change the height requirement my little princesses are going to be so bummed... and I will be too, cause when I was their age I felt so cool going on the Matterhorn.

Maybe I'll email guest services too. If they tell me the same answer, that's good enough for me! If they don't... well... this is going to drive me NUTS!

BTW, it's NOT rumor or speculation when you are told directly by a CM over the phone that it will change and then that it will not change, or in the case of RSR that the height requirement will by 48", which is then published on Disneyland.com as 40" (not to mention the press stating 42"). :confused3  So @ this point, take anything verbal or written by a CM with a grain of salt. I am simply going by what is published on the Web site, which has had its own issues the past couple of months, or what I see in person a week from tomorrow. Grumbles...

And if you folks think this ride height stuff @ DLR is bad, you should have seen the uproar over on the WDW board over the Test Track closure back in April. CMs could not confirm anything about it because the Epcot calendar wasn't updated properly, despite signs about the closure being present @ the attraction in Epcot. In short, Di$ney needs to get its guest communications act together.
