The rationing of Duffy

Okay, I was floored when I heard they are limiting Duffy purchases. Seriously? I can't imagine buying any Duffy anything, but if I did want to buy 6 Duffy outfits, would it be that hard to buy 3 at one store and 3 at another store? Or perhaps bring a friend with me to buy the 6th outfit that Disney is refusing to sell me? Who comes up with this stuff?

According to my friends in the merchandise division, in Japan, the Duffy limit is 3 items per person. Because of that, our Japanese guests were coming over and really loading up on that merchandise causing shortages here. There was also speculation that the Star Wars merchandise was going vanish overnight if some kind of limit wasn't placed on it.

Does anyone else think there is some reverse psychology going on here? I mean, we know this tack works for Apple products. Hype it up, limit the supply and watch the demand skyrocket! Now I am certainly not suggesting that Duffy is on par with Apple :rotfl2:, but I have to admit that Apple marketing is a shrewd plan that other companies can learn from. Maybe Disney is hoping the demand will rise with a more limited supply. You know what happens when someone says that we can't have something ...

It wouldn't surprise me, but I know Duffy has old days Beanie Baby status in Japan. I've seen some pictures of DL Tokoyo and it looked like everyone was carrying a Duffy. They are very into the outfits and accessories too. I have a friend that bought a Duffy a few years ago before he was Duffy, I guess you'd call him "vintage" and she sold him on ebay for almost $700! I bought my niece a "My First Disney Bear" in 2004 at WDW (again before they were called Duffy) and I have seen that bear sell on ebay for $400. So I think he is very popular and collectible, just not necessarily here in the states.

When I hear about Duffy, all I think about is the Duff beer Homer drinks on the Simpsons tv show.
;)

Maybe it's like the DeBeers consortium with diamonds. Supposedly, diamonds are not (geologically speaking) rare enough to command the prices they do, but the consortium controls the supply available to the public and by doing so, they create scarcity and cause prices to rise.

This could be called the D-Bear consortium. :lmao: (I crack myself up)

Not that it justifies the price, but looking at those Duffy's, they look like they are mohair (but I can't tell for sure) Think Steiff. It would justify the very fancy boxes though. Probably limited editions. Still very expensive, but then again, there aren't any bids on them either.

On my wedding day, my husband got me a purple Duffy bear (I think it was called the Disney Bear then). I heard a couple years ago that people were putting together museums in Japan and were buying them off eBay. I have no idea if that is the real reason but the collectors from Japan were buying multiple collections in every color Disney had offered. I didn't have any trouble handing mine over for the $800 it sold for. :goodvibes
