call me the bionic woman - i have a new elbow

so....it's a long story that is very difficult to write with one hand - and my left hand at that.

two weeks ago, as i was walking towards the exit of a hiking store (how ironic) i tripped over something and took a high speed dive into the floor.
had it been a pool, it would have been the most perfect racing dive ever.
Alas, it was a very unforgiving stone floor, not water.

Naturally i put out my hand straight in front of my diving body to catch myself.
and before my eyes i saw my arm snap in the opposite direction of what nature intended as white flashed across my eyes.
i landed on the floor and began screaming in pain. Screaming that wouldn't stop for 3 hours when the emergency room orthopedist finally popped the elbow back.
I should add that i'm allergic to morphine, making pain control nearly impossible.

However, popping the elbow back in place wasn't enough.
Apparently, when i do something, i do it right!!
As it turned out i had also shattered my elbow - meaning it would have to be surgically replaced.

Long story short, i'm now a bionic woman with a new elbow.
My right arm is all bound up so i don't know yet how successful the surgery was in terms of function, but i woke up from the surgery, so in my book that's a success!!

I won't be able to drive for 2 months (making work, caring for my mom, etc. difficult if not impossible).
But it could have been worse - had i not put my hand out, who knows what might have happened. A whole host of possibilities even worse than shattering an elbow!

And just think, next time i'm trying to watch the MK parade, i'll really be able to elbow my way to the front (just kidding) ;)

..

Ouch. That sounds utterly painful.

I hope you heal (so to speak) soon. pixiedust:

Oh my that sounds like quite an ordeal. Good thoughts going out to you that your recovery is smooth.

Oh my goodness!!!! That had me cringing as I was reading this. Take care of yourself. Hopefully the time will pass quickly and you will be back to 100% in no time. Sending healing pixie dust your way.

Yikes!! and Ouch. Good luck with the healing. Hopefully non-morphine pain killers will work now.

Kim

thanks everyone!!
it was indeed the most painful thing i've ever experienced!
i wouldn't wish it on anyone.

i was lucky that an acquaintance was walking down the street when it happened, heard the screaming, came into the store and saw me.
She immediately got down on the floor doing everything she could to comfort me as we waited for the paramedics and ambulance.
She stayed by my side in the ambulance and the emergency room for two hours - until DH could get there. Even though she had a car full of fresh food for her Bar-B-Q the following day.
I dont know what i would have done without her - my guardian angel!!

Ow! Ow! Owie! :scared:
This truly did sound horrific, even through the internet!

Sending pixie dust pixiedust: and good wishes for a speedy recovery.

Oh my goodness! That sounds horrible. Prayers for a speedy recovery, but the patience to give your body the time it needs to heal. Sounds like you have an upbeat attitude!

Ow!!! that sounds very painful. Thank goodness for modern science/medicine that they were able to give you a bionic elbow.

I wish you a speedy recovery.

Good grief! That sounds horrendous! You poor thing!

Man, you just never know; things can happen so quickly.

I hope you have a speedy and complete recovery.

Are you now going to set off the sensors at the airport?

Sayhello

thanks! from what i understand the rehabilitation is going to be very slow and challenging.

but it could have been worse!

i dont know about airport sensors
the surgeon said that people have asked him for letters just in case but he didnt know whether anyone had set anything off

i was more concerned about whether i'd be able to have an MRI - but he said it's not a problem. The metal is a kind that isnt magnetized. so that's good!!

:wizard: Sending you healing thoughts and prayers for a quick recovery. :grouphug:

My family nicknamed my late maternal Grandma...the Bionic Grandma after her many joint replacements (for better blood circulation/some mobility since she had severe RA issues).

Oh wow Beth! That sounds horrid!

I'm glad you are on the mend. Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery and good mobility in the bionic elbow.

This is just almost to painfull to read so i can't imagine how the feeling was irl..
Hope that you ahve a very very speedy recovery without any problems.

Maybe there is a possitive side to all of this because you can't hardly do anything for the next 2 months that means that you maybe could treat yourself to still be going on PCC3.0..... Becaus eyou had to back out because of work if i remember correct...

OMG that sooo painful. I'm glad someone came to your rescue! Hope you have a speedy recovery.

thanks Kate! how's work going? any chance you'll be in WDW in Oct. (half term?) i'll be there then - assuming all goes well. :)

i have to admit that i was very depressed yesterday.
i can't dress myself on top at all so i feel a bit of a prisoner.
and i still can't shower because of the surgical wound - so it's a bit difficult to feel upbeat right now.

but i know this will all pass eventually.
and i'm very embarrassed to be feeling this low when really it's a pretty minor problem in comparison to so many much worse things!

but i hate feeling so useless that i can't even dress myself (i slept in my clothes last night as i didn't want to bother DH who has way too much on his plate with me so completely out of commission  )

well at least i'm confident that i had the best surgeon available, so the outcome will eventually be as good as one could hope for. i hope.

i cancelled PCC 3.0 because the conference i was supposed to attend in June in Orlando was moved to October.
so i moved my DCL reservation to Oct and i'm taking my mom and sister.
it's actually very lucky that i made the switch a while back as i think i would have already been past the final payment date for pcc 3.0 (meaning having to deal with trip insurance and all that entails)

since i won't be able to drive until july and there's a significant risk of dislocation of the new elbow for several months, i don't think pcc 3.0 is in the cards.
i'm waiting for them to announce a PCC on the allure/oasis and i will so be there!!!!!! :)
