I'm NEVER staying home for March Break again! FINISHED 07/17 Just in time!

Monday, March 19, 2012, Part 1: Tour of Hollywood

:music:Under the Sun, under the sun. Darling it's better down where it's hotter... :music:

Hotter? No, it was hotter at home, in PEI, CANADA than it was some days during our trip in California. I loved the sun and the palm trees, but this day was cold and windy!

A double decker bus picked us up at our hotel and took us to a bus depot. At the depot, we got in the boring line (sorry, Disney lines are just much more interesting!) where we moved fairly quickly to the front to hand over our voucher. We paid the extra gas fee and then found our large tour bus. There were not many people on our tour, so we were able to spread ourselves out and hop from side to side to see and to take pictures.

Our tour guide/driver was Tammy. She was funny and friendly. She said we had the seven dwarves with us and was naming the passengers by their personalities. There were some young teens sleeping (poor things just got there from Australia the day before) so they were Sleepy, then there was a Grumpy and a Dopey. Tammy told us stories while driving, besides just showing the sites. My only complaint was that she used a hand held microphone while driving. They really should have headsets to use, it would be much safer!

LA Highways by disneyfreak0306, on Flickr

Yeah, I know, the highways are not that interesting to you. But I'm from PEI. We don't even have a divided highway here. I have driven on them though, so I'm used to bigger highways than some others, but I know people who won't drive anywhere at all outside of PEI because they are scared of the highways. (Two of my sisters for example).

We stopped a few times. Once was in a Hispanic area. We were given about 20 minutes. I bought a really cute blue top with a belt and a flower. They sold them all separately, they sure know how to make us spend... They were all on display together. I haven't worn it yet, I guess I need to find somewhere special to wear it.

Tammy told us when to take the best pictures of the Hollywood sign. She couldn't pull over so she told us to get the cameras out and then she'd say "In two seconds get ready to snap!" etc. It was fun.

Excitement filled the air when we stopped near the Kodak theatre. We were warned about the people dressing in costumes on the streets. Tammy told us they work for TIPS, not to give them what they wanted if we didn't want to. Blanche and I didn't bother with those guys. We had our real celebrities in Disney!

We saw some stars on the Walk of Fame, and the original Grauman's theater (which was getting prepped for an American Reunion that night).

I don't know if you know this about me or not, but I'm a HUGE Disney fan. Mickey Mouse antenna balls attract my attention and I can spot them from afar. I saw the Disney's Soda Fountain and Shop and felt the pull. I don't think I had to twist Blanche's arm to go in there. Blanche got the chocolate ice cream with the waffle cone pieces. I got the vanilla ice cream sundae with caramel and waffle cone pieces.

Ice cream... is anything more delectable than ice cream.... If only it was a summer's afternoon instead of a cold day in March!

Warning: You're going to learn my real name! Gasp, our names are not really Dorothy and Blanche! Good thing I don't really mind!

Pina...what a nice, albeit uncommon name :lmao:
Seriously, I am really enjoying your report, thanks for all the effort you are putting into it. Giving me good insight for a trip to DL maybe 4-5 years down the road.

Honestly, the main reason I ever stay onsite is so that I can send my purchases back to the hotel. Last trip we stayed way offsite and I couldn't have been happier.

I was thinking about doing the holiday tour when we go in November. I love the whole idea of the tours. We shall see.

I have one of the cinch bags that I got on my trip in 2011 and I am going to get another in November. I love mine. It was great to use in the parks, and I use it daily as a purse at home too.

I have never done the Hollywood tour, it hasn't ever really interested me. I guess because we have our car and can go on our own. About six years ago my husband and I went to Beverly Hills for a long weekend to exercise with Richard Simmons. I loved Rodeo Drive!!

Yet another great update! I hope its warmer there then here today!
Snow in southern alberta and wet and cold here!

:rotfl2: Good one! I'm glad you're enjoying it. I have been showing some of it to the class and your little one told me she's seen some of it. Glad I can help you out with your long term plans!

The cinch bags are great. I've got one from WDW and one from DL now.

How was exercising with Richard Simmons? That would have been quite an experience!

SNOW! No snow here. I think we might have hit double digits yesterday, but not today. At least no snow though!

March 19, 2012, Part 2: On the Road again (Hollywood Tour part 2)

Where were we? Oh, finishing our ice cream at the Disney Soda Fountain and Shop… It was delicious ice cream. Really good!

We wandered the little Disney shop a bit, allowing me to take some pictures, before we headed back out into the cold, sunny day.

March 19, 2012, Part 3: Lunch and Santa Monica Pier

Our third stop was for lunch at the Grove/The Farmer’s Market. Blanche and I found a pizza place. It was an interesting area and did some people watching. No celebrity spottings that we noticed though.

We were given a choice between Venice Beach and Santa Monica Pier for our final stop. And you could pick between the two, each person was allowed to choose. Blanche and I chose the Santa Monica Pier. It was beautiful and sunny, but cold and windy. I will have to go back one warm day and dip my toes in the Pacific Ocean. PEI is on the East Coast, so the only ocean I’ve ever swam in is the Atlantic.

My lips were extremely chapped this day, it looks like I don’t have any at all in these two pictures! Hahaha

Route 66 1 by disneyfreak0306, on Flickr

Route 66 2 by disneyfreak0306, on Flickr

We wandered around the pier and then a shopping area up the road. Blanche and I were scared to miss the bus, so we sat on a bench facing the ocean. I phoned home to tease my family and tell them I was where they filmed parts of Three’s Company. That’s when they told me just how hot it was at home! The bus came back while we waited, but we had been blinded by the beauty of the ocean (or the tears in our eyes from the wind!) and we didn’t notice it. We hustled to the bus and we were told they had almost gone without us!!

One of the last “views” on the bus, was of LAX. It doesn’t look so big from here.

LAX by disneyfreak0306, on Flickr

After the tour, Tammy took everyone back to their hotels. Blanche and I gathered everything up and waddled out of the bus. We decided to go in to the front desk to ask about the bus that takes us to the outlet mall.

I reached into my bag to get my glasses (and put away the sunglasses I was wearing) but they were not there! I had left my prescription glasses on the bus. Ccccrrraaaappp! (that’s for you Blanche and Rose). We told them at the front desk and they called Gray line and left a message for Tammy. At the best, they might be able to drop off my glasses the next morning when they picked up the next group for a tour, at the worst, I would have to take a taxi to/from the depot to pick them up. I was not even thinking about not getting them back.

Blanche and I decided there was nothing more to do at this point, so we went to Mimi’s to get some supper. We picked up a take out menu and decided what we wanted to order. Blanche went back to the hotel in case someone from the bus tour called, while I stayed to order.

As soon as Blanche walked around the corner from Mimi’s, she saw Tammy’s bus outside the hotel, and hobbled over to thank her. Tammy saw her and met her outside in the street. Blanche gave her an extra tip, a hug and a big thank you for me. The wonderful front desk clerk (Eddie) had already run outside to get my glasses for me as soon as he had seen the bus.

I can’t praise the people I met in California enough. I found the people friendly and helpful wherever I met. Eddie was great. Tammy was awesome. Christine was incredible … and I was FORGETFUL!

Since it was going to be about 15-20 minutes for the order to be ready, I decided to go back to the room. I can’t remember if she had picked up my classes already for me, or if I had to go pick them up. I do remember heading back twice to give Eddie an extra tip too though.

Blanche and I both got cheeseburgers and fries and a half dozen blueberry muffins to share for breakfasts and snacks. They were all just okay. Nothing extra special. We never did get back, though. I wish we had. At least for breakfast!

We didn’t go back to the parks that evening. We relaxed and hung out in the room. We knew we had a really early morning coming up, so we wanted to be well rested.

Tuesday, March 20th 2012: Walking down the middle of Main Street USA

Our morning got started early-very early – but, luckily, we were still not totally used to California time. Disneyland Park was scheduled to open at 8am, and we were planning to use our one Magic Morning entrance to get in at 7am.

Our plan was to ride everything that we wanted to that was open in Fantasyland. We didn’t quite get to the park as early as I’d have liked – Blanche had to change her shirt! I thought we should be there by 6:30 am to get through the bag check area. We didn’t get there that early, but I don’t think the bag check was open when we got there.

Here I am… attempting capris and sandals! Let’s see how this goes!

This is what our hallway in HoJo looked like. And the time stamp says 6:30 am.

We’re through bagcheck… and the time on this one says 6:52. In my mind, we should be in the park, waiting at a rope somewhere!

Mickey Bench by disneyfreak0306, on Flickr

Once through bag check, we got in line. I couldn’t remember which line was supposed to be the fastest, so we just got in the shortest line. I was bouncing, like Tigger, wanting to go into the park. They didn’t let us in until a little after 7am and I was a little perturbed that they were wasting part of my one hour of early entry.

Let me in!

Let me in! by disneyfreak0306, on Flickr

We continued to walk up Main Street… heading straight through the castle into Fantasyland. I didn’t slow for pictures, so many were blurry. Will you walk with me along Main Street? Hope you don’t mind… because you’ll just have to skip the rest of this post if you have a problem with that!

Up next: Fantasyland, here we come!

March 20, 2012, Part 2: Fantasyland!

We had a list of suggestions from a website, and we planned on following that list to get as much done in Fantasyland as possible. The first ride listed was Peter Pan. Looking through my pictures, I realized that I did not take enough pictures of Fantasyland! I guess that means that I have to go back and make up for that. It was cold, and like I've said before, when I'm cold, I don't take as many pictures.

I liked Peter Pan, and I like it at WDW too, but I don't understand why the wait times can be so bad for this ride. I think it's cute and fun, but it's not a thrill ride, and I honestly can't picture myself waiting in a long line for it. Fortunately for us, at 7:05 am when we got in line...

Peter Pan 1 by disneyfreak0306, on Flickr

The wait time was listed at TWENTY minutes!!!!

Peter Pan 2 by disneyfreak0306, on Flickr

but we were on the ride within 3 minutes.

Every trip, I plan to take notes and every trip I fail miserably! I then need to rely on my memories and on my pictures. I don't remember exact thoughts on Peter Pan. I know I liked it (like I said earlier), but I like anything unless it makes me dizzy.

By 7:12 am, we were in line for Dumbo. I remember thinking the view should be better, and I remember being freezing. Blanche had four layers on, plus a pair of gloves and my thick mittens. It was chilly out, and downright cold in the wind on the ride! My fingers were getting numb by the end of Dumbo, and I was struggling with pressing the shutter button on my camera! \

 Hi. My family has just decided to start planning a trip to DLR (it will take a while for us to save), but I am reading lots of information so I can properly plan.

I love all the pictures you are posting. They realy give me a good perspective of DLR. Can't wait to read more.

All I can remember is that I liked it, and my fingers had warmed up a little by the end of the ride! I do recall thinking it was hard to take pictures too.
Next up was the Tea Cups. I had never been on this one before, mostly because I don’t really like spinning rides. But I really wanted to get the shot with the clear person and the spinning background. Well, Blanche couldn’t spin us! It was so funny, she totally could not make us spin.

Thanks! I love teaching kindergarten... they are totally little sponges and they learn the second language so quickly!

We wandered through a shop nearby before we got in line for the Storybookland Canal boats. I have to do that in another post because I will have too many pictures for this one.

Sorry I lost my creative flair on the trip report. I’ll try to find it again later and get more into the writing. I should get my sister to do it, she’s the author!

On a personal note, I got my assignment for next year and I’m teaching French Immersion Kindergarten again! So excited, 3 years in a row. The most I’d ever done before was 2. In 9 years teaching! This will be 5 years in the same school too, which will be nice. I had taught at 5 different schools in 6 years before I started at this one.
Let’s hope that it warms up… at least enough to take the socks back off!

Congratulations on getting the assignment you wanted!!
