Resale or direct

Looking to get a 50pt add on. Is it best to buy direct or resale?
Thanks,
David

"better" = faster and you want to have the option to throw pts away on cruises and trades out of the DVC system (and you have big piles of money), then the answer is direct.

"better" = cheaper and you plan to use DVC pts only for DVC stays (and you are in no hurry, as the process generally takes 6-8 weeks after you have an agreement - not to mention a longer search if you are looking for a certain resort and UY month), then the answer is "resale."

Depends on the resort.

Okw direct
SSR 50 pts toss up on price

If you want the same UY it might be hard to find the contract you need.
The small contracts pricing and closing costs might close the gap to direct on pricing because the prIces are higher per point and closing is only spread to 50 points instead of more.

Do the math. Figure out what the cost per point is buying resale, then add $7-9 per point if you are paying closing and another $4-6 per point if you are paying maintenance fees. Then compare that to the cost of buying direct, minus any incentives. Then figure out if it is worth months of waiting for the right 50 point contract to come up, getting outbid, waiting for ROFR, etc. Once you have assigned values and weighed all your options, then only YOU can decide if direct or resale is better. Good luck! :)

Hmmm...you keep this up and you're going to lose your job as a DVC salesperson, um, I mean guide. :rotfl2:

But I kid. :)

It also depends on how elusive your UY is. I spent over a year trying to find a 50 point BLT add on in our June UY via resale. Finally gave up and bought direct last month while at WDW. I know I paid more, but it's hard to buy something that you can't find.

Agreed! I've been looking to add on 50-75 points at VWL and I have been looking for alomost a year. I'm in no hurry. I have a December use year and I almost pulled the trigger and bougt direct last November (to get the "extra" points) but I held off. We'll see if I can find anything by this December :headache:.

One thing to consider is that you can probably buy a 100 point resale contract for close to the price of a 50 point direct add on. So this lets you widen your search a little bit.

Not if you don't want/need 100 points, and the MFs that come with them. ;)

I would take 100 points but I haven't found that either. The smallest I've seen is 150. I already have 930 points and I was looking to get to 1000 but I can wait.

Ditto! We are in same exact situation. We've been looking for a small BCV contract for quite some time with absolutely no luck.:confused3 Finally we gave in and went to buy direct only to find that Disney has no points available in our use year.:confused3 Like you said, it's hard to buy something you just can't find.

I've been waiting for a 50 point resale at Beach Club with an October use year for about a year now...still waiting. I think I'm going to end up buying directly through Disney, if they have them!

Oh brother. We now have (almost closed) on an Oct UY OKW contract and were looking to buy a small BCV or VWL contract to get the 11 month for one particular time a year, but as stated, they seem to be very few and far between. In fact to Rob's point, I have never seen anything under 150 points available for VWL for resale, let alone trying to find an Oct UY. I fear that I might have to go the direct route to get what I want. :worried:

To Rob and Sharon - what did you two decide as far as waiting it out for a mythical small resale contract with your UY or did you just bite the bullet and buy direct? popcorn::

I haven't done anything yet. I don't need them right now, I can wait. I own 150 points at BCV now. I can wait a little bit, but I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and buy directly from Disney.

I also would be looking for a small BCV contract in the near future so it looks like I'd be competing against 3 other potential buyers for resales that are extremely difficult to come by ;) I was thinking direct for 25 points (which initially I calculated to be not too much more than a high-priced resale) but have been too lazy to calculate the difference now that I know DVC also charges you MFs for current use year points pro-rata... I do know that it still won't be that much more than a BCV resale, so probably will go the direct route.

Still, I guess I could change my strategy - save up for more points at BCV and wait a few more years. I am definitely not saturated with points yet and someday want at least 500...

Terri

Terri and Sharon - Thanks for your updates.

Terri - We may go the VWL route, so hoepfully I won't cause too much competition :hippie:

Sharon - I see your daughter is getting married soon, congrats! :thumbsup2

Thanks! Yes, she's getting married in the chapel at the Grand Floridian...we are all very excited!

Came back to let you know that...I finally was able to buy a 50 point contract at BCV!!! It has an August use year...I have October, but that's fine. I'm waiting for Disney to decide if they want it...gonna be a long month! lol I will let you know how I make out.

Got an email yesterday informing me that Disney passed on the contract and it's ours!!! :)
