Questions about buying smaller contracts

I'm thinking that if we do eventually purchase DVC, we will need around 200 points. Would it be smart to break that number of points into smaller contracts? I'm thinking it might be nice to save enough money to buy 100 points at a time, maybe at different resorts.

As for the booking window, if I have 100 points to use at one home resort resort at 11 months, can I only book a room that will be covered by the 100 points? Can I use the other 100 points from my other home resort at 7 months and add it onto that reservation?

That sounds kind of confusing. Basically, what is the best way to use points at 2 different home resorts? Or would you stick to smaller contracts all at the same resort?

One thing you can do is book the home resorts on alternate years or every three years. By banking and borrowing, you can get three times the points of the original contract to use. But if you went every three years, you'd have one year you didn't go at all.

You are correct that you can only use the home resort points at 11 months out and any points at 7 months out.

When you buy a contract, though, you cannot break it into smaller contracts. DVC can break it into smaller contracts so you could buy 200 points and get two 100 point contracts on a direct purchase. If you bought a 200 point resale, you would get a 200 point resale.

as long as you only need 200 pts each year, that could work.

just remember to keep track of your contracts separately since you can never mix pts from different resorts until the 7 month window.

if you own at BLT and SSR, you can use banked SSR pts, current SSR pts, borrowed SSR pts or pts transferred in from another SSR owner to book SSR/THV at 11 months out. but pts from your BLT contract would be useless for booking SSR/THV until the 7 month window. (and vice-versa.)

That's seems to be the strategy for most people with more than one resort.

I'm in the process of buying my second resort. I had originally hoped I can book at one resort at the 11mon window, then shuffle the points from the other resort at the 7mon. To do that, I'd have to cancel the reservation and re-book based on availability , also defeats the 11mon window.

The alternative is to use current points and book a split stay.

It seems really complicated. I know there are tons of people with multiple contracts, I just wonder how they manage!

yep - maintaining a spreadsheet is probably a good idea.
